@Jaymannn9 well Johnny is the exception to your thought. For someone as good as he was, he proves over and over that he just makes stuff up. Search YouTube for Johnny Miller. I still watch Johnny on tv for the comedic value.
At his best, Miller played as well as anyone ever has, including Tiger. Too bad he couldn't sustain it. As for this video, it's fundamentally sound. Ultimately however, one has to build and develop one's own swing , My advice - read and study everyone and then practice like hell until you can find your own.
"If Ben Hogan saw this he'd Puke!" Being a great player does not qualify someone to be a great instructor any more than it qualifies them to be a great golf commentator. But watching golf on good 'ole NBC is definitely more entertaining with "the mouth" on the mic.
@TheNYgolfer no.....u are on crack. i meant to say ONE of the best. his teaching is similar to how ben hogan describes the golf swing. gets really into the mental aspect of why you should or shouldn't do certain things. if you you don't agree than who do you think is one of the best teachers? please respond....i would like to know who you think are better teachers.
I've been golfing a few years, but decided to really try to understand the swing this year. Nearly everything I first assumed was true about a golf swing was wrong. The thing I love in this video is the way he describes the palm of the bent right hand hitting flat against a brick wall at impact--this is the exact opposite of the flipping move that many amateurs have, where the left wrist is bent and the right is straight. He's right, and there's a difference between cocky and authoritative.
The "gravity move" or how to properly start the downswing, is so crucial. It is also the thing I think most separates a real players swing from the rest of us. At least 90 percent of amateurs I see, and myself for years, start down by pulling with the left side. This creates the 'over the top' swing path. It is the natural way a mediocre player tries to create club head speed. The first time I 'felt' the correct move, I effortlessly added 20% more Club head speed, and started hitting it perfect!
@ScratchrBust51 dschultz6072 I agree…with much respect for Mama Woods, we all didn't come into this world with a 5 iron in one hand and the 2011 Green Jacket in the other. That's right, 2011! A good majority of casual or weekend golfers learned to hit a baseball well before ever attempting to hit a golf ball, which causes that initial (reactive) move with the front shoulder. It's not hard to fix, it just takes a lot of patience and range balls.
@ScratchrBust51 Ben Hogan started his downswing by turning his hips back to the left, which is what most power players do. Gravity down is an easier swing and is more consistent, but chicks dig the longball.
One of the most deadly accurate iron players of all time. People talk of how accurate Tiger is. Tiger comes within feet of his intended line and distance but when Miller was in his heyday it was INCHES. He was cocky as hell and maybe still is a bit, but I guess back then when you could shoot 63 to win the U.S. Open on Sunday you can be allowed a little cockiness. What did him in, in the end was his putting. Always love listening to him tear apart some of these prima donas on tour.
Perfectly said and no one has ever given so much info. So precisely in any free help. I am an open tennis player. And know that everything he says is exact and true. Well done. And thank you.
When Johnny talks about turning level its important to remember to tilt your shoulders on the backswing whereby your left shoulder is 26 degrees lower than the right shoulder. This helps create the correct swing plane going back while turning the shoulders 55 degrees/ (for right handers)
@nuckster94 I understand what you are trying to teach with your well meaning comment. There is so much confusing swing plane instruction these days that can be simplified by having the correct posture at set-up. The correct set-up and the 'whole left side take-away' Miller describes puts the player on the right plane. With maybe a minor tweaking for those prone to be too flat or upright. This video so clearly and succinctly explains so many beautiful fundamentals.
One of the best instruction lessons, especially the gravity fall from the top and then the effort near impact. If you / we do these two things only, it will help correct the hit impulse.
Johnny Miller is a tall guy. His swing had a fault when he hit the ball his body jump up a little bit. You are young you can play through it at the impact but when you aged this little jump can wreck your game. The fault is at the transition from the top! Not as Nicklaus said you drop down. NO NO NO. You tuck in behind the shoulder like Hogan did. That is power stored and ready to be released.
I like a great deal of this, but I'll take exception with a few things. Everything he says is not fundamental. Fundamental means all good golfers do it i.e. turn the shoulders or shift their weight efficiently. The part I don't love is the crossing over of the forearms in the follow through. This can work if you have a neutral to weak grip, but if you have a strong grip this will only cause a snap hook. Take a look at zach johnson's follow through and you'll see what I'm talking about.
That is about the best instruction video I have seen, I have been playing since I was 5, so I didn't need to watch it more than once, but I will, went out the next day concentrating on the way the clubface behaves at impact, and holding it square, [unless I was drawing it] and the gravity thing on the downswing and struck it really well...no wonder he has so many course records!

@watertonrivers That is simply not true. Only Weiskopf could keep up with Jack and they both could blow it past Miller when they wanted.

you gotta love when bogey golfers (or worse) critique a guy like Mr. Miller in his efforts to help the sad bunch of hacks.
