What a wonderful sight and sound!! It reminds me of my days as fireman in South Africa on the mighty 4-8-4s that we had on the line through the Karoo desert there. The South African locos were just about based on the mighty NYC Niagra 4-8-4s. Wonderful stuff and thanks for posting

does the 844 have a 6-chime, or a hancock 3-chime?

UP's 3985 and 844 both carry the same commercial Hancock 3 chime whistle, but there are subtle differences to the sounds of each engine. 611 carried a Hancock 3 chime and so does 4449, but neither of these engines sound like the UP jobs. To complicate matters, Steve Lee has a personal favorite IC homebuilt three chime that he bolts on to one or the other UP engines on occasion.

Wow, You're right about 4449's, it's a 3 chime from a GN 2-8-0 or a 2-8-8-0. amazing what a 20psi difference can have on the sane whistle, on the 3985 and 844 I mean.
