  • great post!! dave liebmans playing is why many people either love or hate modern jazz. :)

  • Fabulous!!!!!Thanks so much for posting it!! All the best, my firend Bret!!

  • Wow, some comments. Some people like to connect the dots but these dots are always moving and it's hard get a hold of them. It's just jazz....just sound, feelings and virtuoso....textures. Not easy to listen to for the faint of heart.

  • man this guy have no sound, no rithm, no feelings

    what the fuck

  • he's no kenny g

  • @1979 Kevin is right, he's bending (and playing out of rhythm) during the unison passage, but the guitar is in tune the rest of the time.

  • I wonder why Dave chose to have the guitar out of tune with the sax. And you know he chose it that way. There's no way a player of his caliber could not notice they were out tune with each other. Does anyone else hear this?

  • @1979saxman didn't sound out of tune to me. he was playing some pretty funky chords though and bending a lot.

  • @kevinm4435 you mean to tell me that during the unison lines between the tenor and the guitar at 4:27 - 4:38, you DON'T hear that it's HORRENDOUSLY out of tune??

It almost sounds like Ornette's Prime Time Band or so...

  • @1979saxman It sounds nothing like that to me. It sounds exactly as it's supposed to sound.

  • Leib is the sh*t!

  • he plays a bit too many notes for me to really enjoy it.

  • The bass player's head is fucking hilarious to watch! hahahahahaha

  • @charlez360 Rofl

  • @charlez360 so true

  • This group is over the top obviously, but I love the near head bangin bass player, heavy duty!!

  • David Lieman is another master of the saxophone and has taken Coltrane style to another level.

  • @fosterwillie not quite, though he is very good

  • hate to say it guys but with his tenor sax solo here, I think it's brilliantly done. It's a dark tune and he has played that unlike any way I could possibly imagine it being played better. Emotional yeah, sound is incredible. It suits the style of the tune. sorry.. I guess we all have our opinions. it's just evident that he's totally bored with conventionality...

  • does anyone want to trade sax notes, i have nothings gona change my love for your (kaori kobayashi) version, and baker street.

  • When I went to Lafayette HS in Bklyn NY back in 63, I sang doo wop and cut a record with a bunch of guys and some back up musicians. I remember two of the musicians. Dave Liebman who became a renound saxaphonist. Mike Garson who became a renound pianist. I sang lead and did background harmony. Alan Meltzer did 1st tenor and is now also famous for his independent record label and his playing texas holdem on tv. As for me...I still enjoy the Cleftones and sing in the car occasionally. Life...??

  • omg the guy won't shut uppp i'm trying to hear the musicccc fucking douch bag

  • Search for The Paris 1940s for some awesome jazz vids!

  • Random noodling is not music. He just said he had to learn technical skill...but he tosses technical details like chord structures and progression right out of the window.

Jazz won't win any new fans with pointless noodling. Even though Liebman is a master saxophonist...his compositions are lame.

  • i like plqaying to this stuff and with guys who do this, but if i was'nt a musician, i would hate this stuff...gota say if jazz is always going to be like this, it will never come back to prominance

  • @Bosphorus92 What are you talking about? This isn't even CLOSE to outside jazz. There are plenty of non-musicians that like very complex or extreme music, for what it's worth. Get out of 1945, and at least enter the Sixties, for crying out loud.

  • I play saxophone too so what i can tell about this player:)))))))I think you already know.........tundra.............nothing interesting no melody,no sound,no emotion just nanananannananana wich somebody said already.....

Good luck in the future dude

  • mhhat einer dem Willen mich von meiner dauer einsamkeit zu retten

  • As much as I admire Liebman's virtuoso technique, which goes without saying how amazing it is, he just can't make music! No wonder new generations are scared of jazz. Others have had such technique and are just so great to listen to. Its a pity. But still, everyone has their style...

  • What's the saxophone song that goes like this....

Naa nana, naaa nana........ naa nana, naaa nana...... naa nanananana.... na na na na na na na na... and so the same again. It's played in the intro of 2010 Winter Olympics.

  • @ibanezgr i kno the one ur talking about but ur singin it wrong it goes

doo dodo, dooo dodo.......dooo dodo, dooo dodo. deeeddedededede...de de de de de de de de... the trick is to switch from dooos to deees at the third line. this song is very good i heard it on sesame street a couple of years back in the playpen and ever since its been my song.

  • this might be totally stupid question, but is there a way to play saxophone without making any voice to others, im mean like theres electric drums, is there some way to practice it that only you can hear the sound it makes like with earphones, electric saxophone? perhaps, it would be nice, cause i dont have places to play.

  • Janne

if you live where you cannot make noise

get an iphone or any ipod like device, record your tunes and go to a park

you may make new friends just like i did..

if you buy one of those chinese mp4s just make sure to buy some decent headphones

  • @JanneFlinck1981 Janne, I've thought about this too. As far as I can see the best option is an Electronic Wind Instrument like Akai or Yamaha. There is also another (more expensive option) that uses a standard Yamaha 275 with built in midi. Google it.

  • Dave is the man.

  • I didn't like the second solo that much...

  • there's room for extremes in rock and jazz. That second tenor solo is total sickness. Loveit.

  • .kenny g knows his limits and he knows what we all think about his music, I hate his music so much, it makes me feel bad, but we cannot judge anybody, take what you like from the masters, make your own vision, and do it, the rest are just empty words to me

  • I think the world of the theory is amazing and gives you the tools to be more clear in your own language, but when the theory becomes your language there is a disconnection between your head and your emotions,.if you've got a connection with yourself whlie playing, you can be simple but amazing..look at Jan Garbarek or Chris Botti.you can be a great sax player even if you don't play jazz, the thing is the understanding of your own language.

  • Heyyy, hang on a sec. Just because Kenny G plays smooth jazz doesn't mean that's all he *can* play! That's his gig. If I want intellectual stimulation I go to Liebman, when I just want to kick back and relax maybe some Kenny G. There's a time and a place for everything, and that goes for different kinds of music too!

  • Wether or not anyone agrees with Liebman's views or judgements is totally individual. Especially if some feel intimidated or rubbed. Liebman is absolutely right in his assessment of what is important. Knowing your axe, understanding theory and having the skills to execute a thought. No matter if it's Britney, Kenny G, Michael Brecker or Marsalis. I wouldn't waste my time with Kenny G or Britney Spears, but it don't mean that it has no value.

  • Im only 9 years old and I play Alto Sax but I blown away good job

  • Kenny G is easy listening sax. He was an economics major in college. He is only interested in the money. Kenny is not the musician these guys are. Kenny is playing to the crowd of the masses who do not know what they are listening to. Dave Liebman pissed me off when he said that John Dorfmann was the best player in the jazz workshop. I swore I would make him eat those words. I am going to die trying.

  • i wasn't comparing kenny g to any jazz musician. i was being sarcastic.

  • awsome .

  • poor little Kenny g, He's just trying to make his crappy music and people keep butthurting him. Keep it up Kenny. I have no idea if your alive or dead.

  • Why the hell do you compare any real jazz musician to kenny G? He doent play jazz man, hes like, smooth jazz. incomparable to the real stuff. He shouldnt even be brought up in the real world of jazz

  • That guitar player is my teacher....

  • ive played with this guy

  • the narrator said "saxaphonist" really weirdly at the begginning

  • The Spin Doctor spelled "saxophonist" really weirdly in his comment.

  • @THEspindoctor84 He said it how you're supposed to say it.

  • @THEspindoctor84

That pronunciation was originally popularized by Dexter Gordon. See any of Dexter's interviews.

  • @THEspindoctor84 that's because the narrator is wierd

  • @JazzVideoGuy Its good to be a bit wierd!

  • excellent musician and clinician

  • his accent makes him twice as badass

  • How can you wake up and say that the very person who was chosen by Miles and Elvin is not original or just a copy of Trane? Have you guys any idea of what and how Liebman is playing? He's one of the greatest jazz musicians and educators around. Period. He's very highly regarded by all the jazz masters around. Do you think you know more than Wayne, Elvin, Herbie, Jack etc.? If you don't like his playing, fine, but think twice before putting labels on what you have no idea about.

  • ...I totally agree, romeishome1

  • he can play but hes not very original

  • ...what you know, edcerc... open your ears please.

  • and your post is not original

go back to listening to your brittany spears records....you're clueless

  • Dave green sox? Come on man...I hate the Jets!!!

  • this guy's great, I did a translation for a 2 days master class he did a week ago in France, and meeting him was great !!

  • Bass player's head coming off.

    I prefer Liebman over Brecker.

  • Another bass player's head coming off... I'm... well, I wanted to type Brecker, but Liebman is also great... Well I'm sorry, no opinion going on here, there both great...

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, didn't realize you had a podcast!! Subscribed!!!

  • Liebman really is from the school of Coltrane on sax. Not remarkably original but as a fellow sax player one I definitely can continue to examine to expand my range and vocabulary. Very good video

  • lil modal contrafact on nardis, thanks liebman

  • whats with his neck but other than that he is awesome

  • Liebman is hip!

  • Liebman`s is hip!

  • they look like theyr in pain, but they sound goooood

  • it is really distracing. he does look to be in major pain and my neck is killing me just from the crunched body position. i need to stretch! :)

  • He's got a very innovative sound, and geez! he's fast. I'm primarily smooth jazz, so this kind of playing is a fun little treat to listen to. I like the interview they did with him in this video as well.

  • he dont sound this no moe

  • The only thing that I disagree with Liebman about is that it is not all technical. Yes one does need to know thier scales, but if you have a good feel of your instrument, a person will stretch and cover scales through their subconscious, that they may not know the name of. The key is to know what notes to hit, and what notes not to hit. You do need to know your scales as far as knowing you flats and sharps, becuase you do not want to play out of key. But once you know that, one's mind takes over

  • Thats exactly how I play

  • I think you need to know a lot more theory than that. You're really over-simplifying jazz as a whole. Sure, that's how jazz came to be - just people playing around on instruments they were pretty unfamiliar with over fairly diatonic chord progressions, but now it has evolved into such a challenging music that you have to know your horn up and down. Knowing all your scales will only get you so far. If you don't practice rhythms, chords, reading, memorizing, etc... it won't show in your playing.

  • Exactly music as well is a universal language, that all can learn feel and understand ;)

  • I hear alot of people say that they do not like Dave Liebman style of playing. But what we must remeber, is that Dave is a product of the Miles Davis eror , when Miles challenged everyone and everything that had to do with music or sound in general. Dave has continued on in this tradition, and he stretches what some may define as reality.

  • sax--ophonist? WTF

  • hey i just started sax could you give me some pointers?

  • what sort of pointers? what to listen to? how to get a sound out of your sax? i can help you, but what do want help with?

  • hey i need help, I've been playing the alto for 4 years, I need help, i'm looking for classical songs featuring the alto sax but i cant find any

  • you wouldn't find too many classical unless its transposed or adapted, cuz the sax was invented like in the late 1800's, like after the classical period. so u really wouldn't find any unless they're by modern composers trying to do classic.

  • Most classical songs won't feature an alto sax because that sax was made like in the later 1800's (I think). Most.

  • oh, what I'd do to be under the wing of Dave Liebman..Seriously.

  • i dont like his playing

  • i lol'd at the beginning

  • Lol! The beggining!

  • Disharmony at its BEST !!!!

  • i like his keepah

  • dave liebman came to my school last year. he was a clinition with the jazz ensamble. hes so sick

  • What else is there in this piece? It's like all Sax...

  • Try listening to SMOOTH JAZZ--especially tenor-oriented pieces. I think that will change your mind. If not... well then I guess you just don't have the capacity for it. :/

  • i hope you were joking alinktothepresent - i think YOU should listen to the tenor players of ben webster, dexter gordon, etc.

  • hahaha- yes we'll listen to a type of music invented by labels trying to make jazz more marketable and this will... change our minds? !

well yes, i don't have the right capacity for it... few people have such small capacity.

    amen to that queekers.

  • Hey, I was just trying to get the guy into SOME kind of saxophone music, instead of just abandoning the sax entirely. No need to get all defensive and pissy about it.

  • EDIT: And I was refering to the sax when I was talking about him not having the capacity for it--not smooth jazz in particular.

  • This is serious shit people... by christ this group is amazing.. has this quartet put an album together?

  • Very very important lesson for music! thnx fo the video

  • i dig his three H

  • drum and bass :x wonderfull

  • wat song in sonny rollins playin at the beginning?

  • Don't Stop The Carnival

  • sounds like that piece he wrote was built on the changes of Nardis. Man he's inhuman...

  • Liebman kicks ass.

  • sounds too much like trane

  • In that first part where he's playing the soprano he sort of looks like Murdock.

  • yes

  • you know ive never been a liebman fan. the only thing ive ever liked that he has done was the Lighthouse album with Elvin. And even then he got blown away by Grossman.

Am I alone in thinking that his tone is kinda...off?

  • I absolutely agree!

his soprano sound is shocking as well...

  • Maybe so, but his chops are the real deal...but I'd rather hear Chris Potter any day.

  • hey I play the saxophone! Im alnost as good as him! ALMOST!!!...

  • thats a fairly huge claim dude

  • Shutup

  • haha bullshit

  • -The man who made me want to play the soprano.-

  • KRUMOVGRAD NURETTİN-press herre-the best sax show

  • He's got a great style, truly unique.

  • 4:35 ~ 4:45 the best T_T

  • Sonny Rollins playing St. Thomas

  • hello bret

  • Oh, almost forgot to say...Kenny G sucks!

  • Kenny g sucks!!

  • This is a video of David Liebman, a brilliant player! NOT KENNY G!

  • u need to read to other comments before being a dick hole lol he was going on bout the comments before that u didnt read lol

  • Firstly, I had read all the comments before posting mine and my statement was referring to my confusion as to why people feel it so necessary to argue about Kenny G when watching a David Liebman video. Secondly, I am not that ignorant, sad or insecure that I find it fit to abuse or swear at other people over the internet. Don't be so quick to jump into an argument or curse others, its not something people appreciate, particularly in the Jazz saxophone world! Thanks

  • i agree

  • calm down son it will be alright, and cursing others happens alot in the "jazz saxophone world" its a big race see who can get the gigs ssee who can get the stop in the band lol the jazz world is pretty nasty really

  • I am not your son! And yeah lets keep it real nasty, thats what is all about! Getting gigs and beating the next man! Everyone out for themselves! I wish you all the best!

  • I'm as coarse and blunt as a stone, so on behalf of benedictbranca and others who are polite and respectful on youtube - stephensaxjazz, you can go stick your saxophone right up your "dick hole"...lol, joking of course!

  • wat the hell lol u people take comments to seriously on youtube haha

  • trying to beat any one who is going up against you for the gigs u r trying to get any ways. yeah out for yourself mostly but if u have a band your also gettin them the gig as well. thats the music life for ya

  • What the hell is a sax-OFF-onist? Please put the emphasis on the first syllable with a secondary accent on the third. Please.

    Liebman rules.

  • its the british pronunciation.

  • Kenny G Doesn't suck at the saxophone, it's just that he's a sell out.

  • Kenny G is a sell-out. I've heard him play straight-ahead jazz that would give you goosebumps, but he chooses to play smooth jazz because he's more interested in making money than becoming the next great saxophone giant, like Michael Brecker.

  • You two sound like Chazz of The Lone Rangers in the movie "Airheads." Probably just as talented, too.

  • Kenny G can barely play the horn. he stopped practicing when he started making money

  • I really can advice everybody to read the interview with Pat Metheny on Kenny G.

just google on: Pat Metheny on Kenny G

  • If he ever practiced to begin with.

  • Anyone else hear a John Coltrane influence? Excellent improvization.

  • well, yeah - Coltrane is a main influence on anyone playing today. him and charlie parker

  • Very good musicianship, but the music is not pleasing to listen to. I hope he could add good melody line on those very complex improvization. That's why kenny G is famous than this guy.

  • alto sax is awsum. start of playing clarinet then move on 2 sax. and Equinox Quartet is sooo gud!

  • Kenny G is better.

  • kenny g sucks, my sax teacher at a camp worked with tower of power and sed jenny g sucked.

  • If Kenny G sucks why is it that most of the people listen and likes his music also and he is much known than any other saxophone player. He is not that good compare to other sax player but other professional sax player are jealous with what he had accomplished thats why they were saying that Kenny G sucks.

  • kenny g sucks according to my private lesson teacher but hes always says that he can suck as much as he wants as long as hes making more money than any other jazz music player alive

  • Nah those jazz musicians dnt like Kenny G coz Kennys more successful.. There jelous

  • Kenny g is more successful at making crap, n not true jazz, and thats why real jazz saxophone players dont like the guy... no skill to be jealous on only the fact that hes making money doing crap

  • nah there still jelous!! & sooo r u HATER!!

Your just saying that coz every1 else is!!

    SHameO

  • kenny g sucks. hes an insult to sax, as is the entire subgenre of smooth jazz. its bubble gum pop compared to true bebop.

  • Bird Lives!

  • Yes! Very good! See other very great saxophone players in youtube! QuatuorEquinoxe !

  • We need more Dexter Gordon clones and not so many Coltrane clones like Liebman and many others.Dave is really amazing! As is Jerry Bergonzi who I dug even more than Dave. But,in the end I find myself going back to Dexter and Lester...Melody is KING.

  • You're right PDC50. The sheets of sound and lightning fingers serve to impress instrumentalists, and torture the listeners (just an opinion). Space, and melody, is my preference.

  • we need more clones of you! yeah! they should all compromise their art and who they are! for your king of melody!!! yea!

  • @PDC50 i agreee son ya you ganstaaaa mann you gangsta.. remember what armstrong said after the swing era about all the malice...

  • @PDC50 .."they're full of malice, and all they want to do is show you up, and any old way will do as long as it's different from the way you played it before. So you get all them weird chords which don't mean nothing, and first people get curious about it just because it's new, but soon they get tired of it because it's really no good and you got no melody to remember and no beat to dance to. So they're all poor again and nobody is working, and that's what that modern malice done for you"

  • that tune was nardis

  • what insurmant is he playing?

  • lol, saxophone duh

  • liebman is a monster!!

  • wow, dave liebman playing inside... this is a bach partita compared to the stuff he plays during his lectures at MSM. his team-up with phil markowitz is resulting in some nightmare-ish work in comparison to this.

  • It really is. The alto's the easiest to start on in my opinion, but in all my year's experience I think the Baritone Sax is the easiest to play after you're oriented.

  • sure bari literature is eaiser, but playing the bari is difficult to do well. anybody can pick up a bari and honk on it, but to play well is hard to do.

  • what kind of sax is the best for lerning???

  • either alto or tenor is fine. they are the "standard" to begin on, at least in school systems. For an elementary student, be careful that the sax is not "too big", which may be the case with the tenor. For an adult, it really doesn't matter - whichever sound you prefer.

  • I'd suggest Alto. I started with Tenor cos somebody advised me that a big guy like me would have more air to muster, thus the bigger sax to start with. He could be wrong about that rule though.

  • soprano alto or tenor,

tenor's the hardest to start on.
