When I started college in the mid-'80s, I discovered progressive rock, and it was still so much better and fresher than most of what was on the radio back then. I still love prog greatly.
the sublime beauty @ 5:59 of THE Voices, Mellotron and Hammond B-3 at full Holy Heavenlyness is probably my favorite GG section of all. And what amazing company it keeps!!!
F*CK Yeah !!! i Love so much this Feeling !!! Thx GG !!! at 3:29 of the song ...its just ANwSOME PROG riffs ! GREEEEAAAATTTT !!!! WOah ! shit i am enjoying too much !
I just spun this on vinyl two days ago... Between the concept, the themes, the lyrics, the musical cues... I think this may be Giant's most potent album. The closer is phenomenal - Who can't relate to the nostalgia of a childhood trio of best friends who's lives take them in different paths?
In fact from the minute 6, it is another theme called "Three friends" and it gives name to the LP.
The three school friends grow up to become a road digger (Working All Day), an artist (Peel The Paint), and a white-collar worker (Mister Class and Quality) who can no longer understand each other's lifestyles. But regardless of the storyline, the music is astounding, ranging from raucous rock to exquisite choral work, and ending with the stunningly beautiful title song.
We do hear such complex works of art these days. Just look for them. There's so much great progressive rock around these days, along with other similar genres such as post-rock. Obviously you won't find it listening to the radio, but trust me, music is better now than it has ever been before.

@MrBaconbit - Agreed, just ain't the same anymore. I've tried Porcupine Tree lately and they've got some nice sounds but nothing does it for me like '70's King Crimson, Genesis, Gentle Giant, Yes, Happy the Man, and so on...
@MrBaconbit Don't worry too much, friend. The fact that prog is not heard on radio does not mean it's dead...check out the Swedish band Anglagard and you will hear what it is inspired by, heheh

This music is so good. I was stuck at a party listening to 80's music the other day. Even worse was it was 80's Karaoke. No one can Karaoke to Gentle Giant as the music is so complex.
@borgduck Indeed we are.. :-) I posted last year that this was the first Gentle Giant work I heard and that I missed this truly wonderful wonderful music for so long. I've explored the GG back catalogue as a result of this accidental find.

Letter to Madame Blavatsky from Charles Southeran from Isis Unveilked, 1877, vol ii, page 390
This is the first time I ever heard Gentle Giant. It's pretty awesome!
Gentle Giant fans: I urge you to check out this mid-70s prog band from Quebec (they don't sing, or very rarely): MANEIGE
They're very similar, except MANEIGE uses about 20 instruments in their songs, and the members have to switch from one instrument to another (except the drummer, obviously). They're less on the rock side, more on the jazzy-prog-"elevator music"-ish type... hehehe, just check 'em out, you won't be sorry!!
(last part of my "Short" list og my favorite bands at the moment)
Cluster, Camel, Van Der Graaf Generator, Phideaux, Tangerine Dream, Harmonium, Can, Faust, Jethro Tull, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Fields Of The Nephilim.
Thats about it! :) Also I'm 21.(I know age thing is silly)
@Anirml Quite a nice band list. But I miss The Nice for instance in any list in this thread. Or some less known bands from former Czechoslovakia like Collegium Musicum, Blue Effect (or M. Efekt), Fermata, Progress 2, Dezo Ursiny, Flamengo, Gattch etc.
Kraan, Lucifer's Friend, Jericho Jones, Blossom Toes, Triumvirat, Ennio Morricone, The Dave Brubeck Quartet, Triumph, White Noise, T.2, Focus, Opeth, Quella Vecchia Locanda, Osanna, Naked City, Ozric Tentacles, Witchfinder General, Birth Control, Astra, Comus, The Decemberists, Gryphon, Sigur Rós, Agitation Free, Gorillaz, The Mars Volta, Rush, Neu, Ash Ra Tempel, Semiramis, Eloy, Herbie Hancock, Passport, Yezda Urfa, Robert Wyatt, Hatfield and the North, Caravan, Renaissance
Sadly, I've only HEARD of "Gentle Giant" during my schooldyas Back when...even took time to look at the LP sleeves & think 'interesting'...never EVER bought a "G.G." LP then....Paper route money can only afford so m uch, eh?.....but I *shall* rectify that with any & every CD that they now have.

@PocusUK rofl...they all look like crack junkies, and I particulary hope John weathers never drove a van, but heck... can progressive rock get any better ?
Just as solid NOW as way back then. Actulally, I'm happy to see I was into that back then. I can only imagine what it could have progressed to......damn!
