you have to be shitting me. a white guy in this generation who can rock the hair like that and have a voice that powerful needs more soul? come the fuck on.
When I first heard this on the radio I thought it was from the '70s. Then when I looked it up I was like; "Wow, well it's nice to see not all music made between 2000 and now is shit."
@fenerbache13 this type of music wasn't "made" in the time period you are referring to. The music isn't terrible, it's just like watching a cover band.
@6ilovelamp9 Seeing twats like "Lil Wayne" or that Justin Bieber kid top the charts month after month... you say the music we have now isn't shit? Ha.
I just these guys perform @ Skidmore College and also @ the Life is Good Fest. They are smokin. Definitely check them out if they're playing in a city near you!
Its cool that your signed and gettin paid but you guys looked WAAYYY cooler in the studio as seen on pbs. Most importantly don't let that hairdresser near you again!
Its cool that your signed and gettin paid but you guys looked WAAYYY cooler in the studio as seen on pbs. Most importantly don't let that hairdresser near you again!
When I first heard this I thought it was an old motown tune... But I was pleasantly surprised when i found out soul still exists! and in such a good way too!
@tide619 I agree 100% I think the mockery comes from the same ignorance that only white folks are good at golf, hockey, & tennis, etc. White artists like Bogs Scaggs did R&B/Jazz just as real as the root fathers of soul, jazz, and R&B. Matter of fact, Scaggs songs like "LowDown" are covered even today by non-Caucasian artists. I understand it looks awkward at first, but no more so than seeing Serena Williams playing tennis. It just takes some time for people to let it go.
@SpaceOperaBoy Always the Same......Y does music have to be about feckin racsism its a good song so who cares wat colour he is..And wat does tennis have to do with feckin Eli Paperboy Reed.?
Why can't we all just enjoy the music if you don't like it you don't have to listen to it, why does everything have to result in people commenting about racism, and the "guy is trying too hard". If it makes you clap your hands and stamp your feet do we really have to worry if the musician is black or white?
@DaveRhyl Good comment. The world is full of armchair critics, who haven't got the balls or talent to get up there. The boys good and carries the torch for this kind of music. No wonder it was called SOUL.
@CubsRule06. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I had no idea who the kid was but was sure he had Black mentors. That explains his style. It may not be original but I am willing to give him a pass. I wish him well in his musical career.
@CubsRule06 I would never pay to see Eli Reed live. I would pay to see Jamie Lidell. He pulls off the blue eyed soul so much better than this kid. If you like this guy, cool. But I don't.
@june18th1988 I've seen both live, when it comes down to it, both throw off an incredible vibe of energy at their shows. I listen to Lidell more but I'll come out and say Eli had a vibe like nothing I've ever seen...
why are you still hating on this video 6 months later? fucking dumb. go away if you're not buying it.. there's obviously a reason as to why you keep coming back.
Nfoote...so did I and he immediately took me back to Motown, Chicago circa 1960-1965. Not bad for a young white kid! I would love to know who/what influenced his style.
This kid is great. Heard him on NPR radio this morning and I immediately ordered the CD on Amazon. He is Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Tyrone Davis and Sam Moore all wrapped in one. He has got the pipes and he has authentic soul. Don't care a damn about him being white. Go kid!!!!
it has nothing to do with racism. I am just saying there are no black artist today going back to the classic roots of soul and r&b. Like I know Raphael Saadiq is doing it. But the majority is pretty much blue eyed soul. Like Duffy, Amy Winehouse, and James Hunter are pretty much playing black soul.
when will there ever be a young black musical artist today that will step it up like this? Cause all I see too many whites singing black soul music. I respect what this guy is doing, but its just too bad we don't have singers like Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, and other really good R&B and Soul groups of today.
i luv soul, funk, old r nb etc i fort i had every song their was and was thinking wot the f;,;,pk was this tune ,then realised its fairly new one of the best soul songs for atleast 20 years

Racial observations aside, most of his stage show is a pretty noticeable nod to James Brown's old routine.

I don't see why there'd be any controversy of a white guy singing soul. Hell Mayer Hawthorne is one of the best out right now.

@DaveRhyl
I think the people saying he's trying too hard don't realise that the majority of artists these days don't try hard enough.
I think this music is brilliant. With all the computerized crap they call music these days, Eli's music is a breath of fresh air.
