It's still the one birthday present I remember the most, I played it all day even though I had school. i always get sad when kids in my grade(freshmen) say Pokemon is for little kids. They fail to see the beauty in the music and the game play. They say its not violent enough, and when you think about it, it actually is very violent(at least the concept. And the music is awesome. Although I started with Crystal which was bundled with my GBA, as I have matured and grown older I have developed a strong appreciation for retro and indie games. Many kids at my school turn them down on account of graphics or age, but I know that they are still fun as ever. Retro games didn't have to have realistic graphics to sell, they had to be FUN. I wish games were still like that. This is where indie games like Minecraft come in: they usually have a lot of pixel art, but the game is FUN.

My relationship with pokemon was a shaky one at best. Red version was always my favorite. I actually remember the plasticy smell of the cartridge and everything. I sneak my gameboy to elementary school as often as I could, hidden in a secret compartment in my backpack I made out of some spare black linen and some childish sewing knowledge (it actually worked quite well) and would hide amongst the toys in the playground just so I could get 15 minutes of play time.

personally, being a gen 1 player, i really enjoyed pokemon black, more than i did so with d/p. imo, black and white was nintendo's way of trying to get us some major storyline, look at how N said goodbye in the end (TO MOTHER 3's LOVE THEME FOR CHRIST SAKE) and nintendo said that they aimed black and white to older players, which i think was the right thing to do, sure, the pokemon look a bit crappy compared to charmander, but there are over 600 for god's sake.
