People avoid the topics - or put things in a negative light - which makes "the kids" keep it to themselves, rather than talking about it. Parents don't want to believe their kid isn't perfect, they don't want to believe they're cutting, or doing drugs, ditching school, etc. - and when they have to come to terms with it, they don't try to understand it - they just think "Why didn't they come to me?"
