I recorded this, with a melodic banjo player, in 1969, myself on mandolin (hence in the key of A). I think the ideal tempo is slightly faster than 90 bpm; I think you guys are a hair slower than that, but the tune comes across beautifully and clearly in the banjo.
You play it in G. The original key would allow for a bouncier guitar part, with some nice Texas-style inversions. I like the groove of the piano on Howdy Forrester's original recording.
