drwinkle101, I dont know what experience you have with kids/music, but you are completely off base (xcuse the pun). From my experience, motivation from the kid, is the most important thing. A drive to play. Scales my ass. You can drill scales into a kid till he is blue in the face and all you will achieve is, that you turn him away from music. Kid has to want to play, and realize, that he has to invest time and effort to be better.

He has that something special. It is a natural inborn feeling for music, especially "by ear". When I was young, I had this too, I could play any instrument that I picked up. I think that if you "hone" David just right, you'll all be basking in the riches. Don't let him get sidetracked!
