If you visit the U.S. govt's business opportunities site and look at the solicitations for "local guard services" at embassies, you'll find out that it can take hundreds of guards to man entry points, do foot patrols, run mobile patrols of staff residence complexes, do street surveillance, etc. on a 24/7 basis for an embassy that might consist of buildings spread out over a capital city, as well as consulates in other cities. Typically, USMC mans just one post (post #1) within a chancery
