Dora Greenwell, the actual writer of the hymn, was the sister of the first Rector of the parish Church of St. Thomas in Golborne (Wigan). It is thought that she penned this hymn whilst staying in the Golborne rectory as her brother's housekeeper. Aaron's music makes the old hymns more accessible to millions of people. But then the doubts come back, reading the word each day is more like a job, then a joy. Someane in your church is a hypacrite and you start realizing why you questioned Christianity in the first place.

The word "hate" can be taken in different ways. it doesnt mean literal hate like you hate an enemy. it means hate as in "you should love your god more than anyone" so much that the love is paralleled (not literally) as hate. i know this is confusing but remember god tells us to love our enemies!
