This is awesome. Just a great job to the 'projectors'. This takes initiative and innovation to perform a sublime protest like this. Keep up these actions. Art is important and so are your actions. They matter- this Wisconsin progressive supports you.
@RileyCoterocks Actually, that might be a good way to send a bit of a message. (May I suggest "Uncle Pennybags," the Monopoly board game character with the handlebar moustache, as a model?)
Seems to me if *he* merely doesn't like it, at the very least he should have to pay out of his own pocket to take it down. Make sure that when you're recalling him (as I hope you do), you spread the word about all the money this supposed penny-pincher has wasted on this and other pettiness.
Bravo, folks, BRAVO!!! Why does everyone in suits talk about jobs, Jobs, JOBS but want to deny the WORKERS? Who are to JOBS for? Who, exactly, built the offices they think in? Who made their morning coffee? But, one idiot got offended by a mural, so of course we just HAD to respect the idiot's sensibilities and take the mural down. Now, that's power. Too bad the idiots seem to have it.
And yet I bet you live in a Laissez-faire capitalistic society, don’t you? I also bet that you don’t live a non-profit life where you only spend money on absolutely what you need, live at a bare minimum, and any extra wealth that you receive you give to the government to disperse, right? How ironic that you are an walking contradiction.
By the way, It’s because of capitalism that you have an affordable computer to write your comment. Oh the irony!
@Yereviltwin2 Not yet, unless the teabaggers take over. No, I did not take a vow of poverty and live like a monk. Even in the most socialist countries in Europe, few do. I am not a rich capitalist, I have never owned stock. I am on disability. I became disabled because I did not have medical insurance and could not use a capitalist health-care system, so I delayed seeking medical help for my condition. You don't know squat of how I got use of this computer.
@Yereviltwin2 There isn't such a thing, never has been. Economic extremism, socialist or capitalist, never works. The most effective economies are mixed ones. It's not even that difficult figuring out what to do with which industries. Real-world evidence is right there.
Certain industries that are necessary anyway, such as health care ("insurance" really isn't accurate), are simply cheaper socialised. We all pay regardless; in a capitalist model we're just stuck paying for profits too. ...
@Yereviltwin2 ...The U.S. pharmaceutical industry is an example of one that benefits from the profit motive, which encourages innovation & creativity, although even there, it's questionable about whether current patent protections make monopolistic practises too easy. Recently, e.g., I read somewhere about court's dubious ruling that a pharm. co. whose patent has expired has a right to pay off other companies not to sell generic versions (which of course screws over consumers).
And BTW just earning money does not make someone a "capitalist." A capitalist, as those of us who actually went to school are aware, is someone who owns the *means* of producing wealth. (Today this can include wealth itself, if you're into investment banking.)
Ummm…? Did I imply that simply earning money makes someone a capitalist? No. BUT! If you do earn money, spend it, and financially participate in our American society; you do vicariously support capitalism even though your politics may not.
BTW, Google “Capitalist Definition.” The context in which I used the term was a person that supports capitalism. USA! USA! USA!
This is a very smart idea. What is troubling is the "police-state" response. Why exactly did the Augusta police presume they could intervene and stop this? It was not against any law. When I lived in Maine the prevalent sentiment was that the government needed to stay out of people's lives as much as possible. I'm wondering what has changed.
@euqip I am a resident of Augusta, and in my opinion the officer shouldn't be vilified. After all he is a state employee, and they where projecting it onto the State House from State property and the Governor is unfortunately his boss so his hands are tied. The Augusta Police Department is 400 yards away from where this happened, and no city police (who are unionized) tried to stop them first;)
@ebolaking44 Right you are, the individual officer should not to to be vilified. It would be good if someone would remind the Governor that the State House and the ground it stands on does not belong to him.
I love the State of Maine and am both mystified and saddened about the election of this man.
check out how Chile celebrated their Bicentennial (google/youtube Espectáculo de Luces, Palcio La Moneda) using the same concept- and they've used it for art across the Rio Miapo in the center of town as well as Christmas holiday celebrations within Las Condes Municipality

The way people are jumping on Lepage over the removal of the labor mural is unfair. What people should really be concerned about is anything related to policy and the well being of the state of Maine. The fact remains that Lepage is making positive changes to the state of Maine and cleaning up the mess that previous governors have left.
@lennyb117 You retard, Lepage hasn't done 1 good thing for this state! He based his campaign on bringing businesses to Maine. The guy that he put in charge of DECD (Department of Economic & Community Development) admitted on TV that he doesn't know what he is doing! Lepage is driving National Semi Conductor & many other businesses out of the state too! NSC is a huge contributor to our economy too. Your an ignorant ass one of those people that doesn't pay attention, but thinks they know it all.
@BBDrums34 It is very unfortunate that you feel this is as important an issue as you do. We are in the midst of very difficult economic times and you are getting hung up on a painting that frankly is not very well done. The focus of Maine residents should be on the economics of our great state. Do you realize we are faced with the highest tax burden in the country? Why do you think this is? Well, let me tell you: Overspending by previous governors. Lepage is trying to fix this.
@lennyb117 Also the removal violated a contract with the labor department, and as such the govenor faces reimbursing the federal funds used to commission the mural. so I fail to see where he is saving money???
@lennyb117 Clearly your blind if you think that the removal of the mural was "fixing" anything. It is not important to us weather the mural was "done well" or not it is what the mural stands for, an idea that Paul Lapage is scared by.
@lennyb117 Seems to me LePage is the one getting "hung up." Just because his campaign donors are "offended" does not mean he has a right to remove the mural. Whether you approve of workers' rights or not, it is, indeed, history. I don't think anyone claimed it was a Rembrandt or anything; the point is what it represents. It seems hypocritical to accuse others of being petty & defend LePage's behavior, which is not only petty but wasteful, contrary to your claim that he's serious about saving.
@BBDrums34 Resorting to personal attacks is in fact offensive and takes away from your argument. It would be in your best interest to try and find common ground with the person you are attacking. A different view point does not make someone ignorant or retarded. We live in a country where free speech is encouraged and opinions are respected. Next time you post it would be advised that you try to disprove a persons opinion without name calling.
@cblegere If someone has an ignorant or retarded point of view...then its a pretty safe bet that you're dealing with someone who is ignorant or retarded.

@cblegere "Offensiveness" isn't a matter of fact. It's your opinion. Personally I agree, at least to the extent that I dislike the choice of words, but things are not offensive "in fact." I also find your preachy tone and overuse of the passive voice telling; this too is a common tactic among writers who are trying to frame their opinions as fact.
The First Amendment isn't a very effective defence against name-calling, in any case; the other person's right to be rude is protected too.

Excellent. I raise money every day to help protect Maine's North Woods from this lunatic Paul LePage. People in Maine are outraged at what this fringe maniac has proposed.
I love this. We here in Maine have a ton of creative, loving, caring, involved people. Our crude, disgusting and embarrassing governor speaks not for many people here. Mostly those who have money to share amongst him and his "friends". Save us, please. Did I say I love this idea?
Dude, can I just say with all sincerity that I fucking love you? For real. That is brilliant. Totally non-violent resistance. Love it. Love it. Love it. It will forever disgust me that workers fought so hard for our rights and were murdered and this asshole governor can't even stand a painting of them. What a pile of crap he is. The good news? There's people like you. Well done, my friend.

I think this is super cool. But don't you think that the art should show bosses working WITH their employees. It isn't just about the employees. It's about the relationship between the two. Without it strikes WILL break out. This piece of art is so beautiful that it should be shown in an even more public place. Most didn't even know that this piece of art existed. I hope that they put up a mural that depicts people working together and put the other in a place where everyone can see and enjoy it
This is wonderful!!! Thanks to all involved! Ohio is standing in SOLIDARITY with ME, WI, IN, NJ, and others whose Governor could be mistaken for Hitler! I hope you can sucessfuly show this all over Maine so everyone has a chance to see it. I have a sister and her family that live in Union, ME. GOOD LUCK and GOD BLESS!
This is great - so awesome - this should become a movement and you're so right in everything you say - "[we] have a voice, as soon as [we] choose to use it. If [a] government takes a symbol away and tries to hide history, [we] can make the truth resonate a thousand times stronger with [our] own 2 hands. This is a lesson the labor unions taught us all.. . The maker of the art is unimportant. What matters is that [we] see it, and [we] have the freedom to speak about it." THANK YOU, BRILLIANTS!
When archiologists dig up ancient civilizations they look at their art and religion (religion is usually depicted in their art) to determine how "civilized" they were. The lack of art with this gov tells me; no creativity, no vision and hopefully no future in politics. Take your state back!
Maine's governor took down the mural in the department of labor... the people put it back up. We cannot be defeated. We will always find a way. Grass will always grow through the cracks in the concrete you lay to oppress it, and eventually, it breaks into pieces.
This is amazing and wonderful. Who would have thought that Troglodyte LePage would be the one to remind Maine of its labor history! BrokeFix, I would like to shake your hand!
To the creators: Please consider traveling your show to other cities around the state and promoting show dates that would allow more Maine citizens to view the mural's image. Consider contacting colleges, universities and city administrations to locate buildings large enough to serve as venues for the display and PROMOTE show dates and times and provide more Mainers a chance to see the art and learn about Maine's labor history than was possible when the mural hung on the walls of the Dpt.
That old fart that wanted them arrested for "putting the mural back up" is laughably stupid, and yet typical of the mindset that would remove the mural in the first place.
As a hard-working Mainer I just want to THANK YOU for doing this! Neither Paul LePage nor his policies are representative of the overwhelming majority of Maine's citizens--he was elected with only 38% of the vote. It's so important to me and nearly everyone I know that people outside of Maine understand that we are as embarrassed, confused, and frustrated by our Governor's actions as they think we should be.
Non-violent protest meets new media--brilliant! Thanks again!
The clip from the Rachel Maddow show will be available tomorrow morning on the Maddow Blog website, so you can watch her shout-out for yourselves. GREAT JOB!

I want to know who that jackass is at the end of the video thinking that he is somebody special. lol what a joker! next time, dress up as bozo the clown because thats about how scared I would have been by his shallow threat! Its called freedom of expression jackass!
boodogrady - you are seriously mistaken if you think that all my rights come from unions. I have worked for 40 plus years and have never worked for or with a union. Damn glad as I would prefer to be judged on MY efforts rather that a union contact. If you prefer other good luck to you.
This video makes me proud to be a Mainer again. Excellent job gentlemen! It takes courage to do that, and I am a big fan courage. be sure to keep me posted if your going to do any other projects. Very cool
How about a projection bombing of pictures of all the paper mills, woolen mills and chicken farms etc. that are no longer in business partly because of union efforts to " take care of the workers" and give them their rights. Those rights don't amount to much when you no longer have a job.
you may have unions confused with globalization. you do realize that all the rights you have as an employee come from unions, yes? however, if stockholm syndrome is your gig, have at, but do try to respect the will of those who don't wish to take part in self-destruction.
greetings -- and appreciation and kudos -- from an exiled mainah in california. a friend of mine posted this on his fb feed, and i fell immediately in love with it. great work. keep fighting the good, creative fight! very best, dave

We're still trying to meet the folks who projected the labor mural onto the Maine State Capitol building -- get in touch! The Rachel Maddow Show

Great video -- love it! Put the mural back up! Say -- what's the song and group?

Excellent. I raise money every day to help protect Maine's North Woods from this lunatic Paul LePage. People in Maine are outraged at what this fringe maniac has proposed.
Keep the pressure on! Don't stop!

I love this. We here in Maine have a ton of creative, loving, caring, involved people. Our crude, disgusting and embarrassing governor speaks not for many people here. Mostly those who have money to share amongst him and his "friends". Save us, please. Did I say I love this idea?

Once again the creativity and persistence of our movement overshadows the pettiness and ignorance of theirs. Up the Artists!

Love it!! It looks like the ghosts of the murals are coming back to haunt LePage's actions.
taikodad08 11 months ago 2
Maine's governor took down the mural in the department of labor... the people put it back up. We cannot be defeated. We will always find a way. Grass will always grow through the cracks in the concrete you lay to oppress it, and eventually, it breaks into pieces.

Thanks again!

boodogrady - you are seriously mistaken if you think that all my rights come from unions. I have worked for 40 plus years and have never worked for or with a union. Damn glad as I would prefer to be judged on MY efforts rather that a union contact. If you prefer other good luck to you.
buffalobob2199 11 months ago
@buffalobob2199 if you have anything its because of unions, not for your employer being nice.

mozelle59 11 months ago
How about a projection bombing of pictures of all the paper mills, woolen mills and chicken farms etc. that are no longer in business partly because of union efforts to " take care of the workers" and give them their rights. Those rights don't amount to much when you no longer have a job.
buffalobob2199 11 months ago
@buffalobob2199
you may have unions confused with globalization. you do realize that all the rights you have as an employee come from unions, yes? however, if stockholm syndrome is your gig, have at, but do try to respect the will of those who don't wish to take part in self-destruction.
