  • sounds like timing chain noise to me could be guides wore or timing chain tensioner rod bad i just rebuilt one in the past few days just some things to check

  • hey man, where'd you get those black fender stickers? or did it coem like that?

  • normal

  • your valves are getting destroyed because your baffle sucks cool air back into the motor and with out the baffle there is no cool air, i bet if you look in your air box there is oil

  • @oSHOLLIVERo ur an idiot the baffle keeps cool air out because that will screw up the valve seats and that noise is the cam chain

  • @redneckjared YOUR SOO GOD DAMMED STUPID!! VOTE THIS UP IF YOU KNOW FOR A FACT THAT BAFFLE SUCKS COOL AIR

  • @oSHOLLIVERo im really not trying to argue with u ive been working on and modding quads for years i know how they work beleve me and you said oil in the ar box thats only i your rings are screwed or your over revved it or flipped it so you really dont know what your talking about

  • @redneckjared okay what ever my dads just been working at the yamaha shop since he was 20 (FUCK YAMAHA) but i had a 400ex and the guy took the baffle out of it and it burnt up my valves and my seals and it was sucking hot air back in my motor which forced it back through the intake. But i do agree that if you have bad oil rings that it will do that

  • @redneckjared baffles reduce noise and cut back air flow. a baffle wouldnt ruin your seals. hondas are junk personaly the only good sport quad they ever made was the 250r. the 400s are junk they are very low tech and are out dated competley.

  • it may be your timing chain or tentioner, or it may be the little spring that is attched to your rods

  • Timing chain or a bad bearing somewhere....

  • sounds like a normal 400....

  • @triplestompd my EX sounds like that too. but it got worse (louder) after a buddy took it for a ride (against my will) and pinned it in first gear. now there's a clack or slap noise. SMH....

  • its your valves man

  • pretty sure its the valves with the way u done the exhaust it has no back pressure and it fucks up the valves

  • mine was doing that and i though something was going wrong in the engine but it was just the exhaust sheild was loose.

  • du that a fuckming plug tightin that shit up all the way

  • im no expert, but to me that sounds like either the valves need adjusted or your timing chain needs tightened a little, if the valves were bad it would smoke some and not run worth a shit, jsut my 2 cents worth hope it helps

  • my 400 ex is making the same noise. we think it is the valves or the top end like the rings

  • the exhaust valves are junk happend to mine

  • yea put the spark arrester back in and get ur valves redone. with the spark arrester out it had no back pressure so it fucked ur valves

  • its prob bec u basicly have it straight piped

  • it could just be a header pipe leak

  • Uhhh.. yeah yeah yeah... needs new wibble washers and a Fetzner fitting.... Yeah that's it!!! And did you put winter air in the tires?

  • well they may be tight they just need cleand clean them in vinagar

  • Timing chain and valve set mine sounded just like that.

  • wow theres some real dumb asses here haha 2-stroke is 2 strokes for one power stroke and a 4-stroke is 4 strokes for every one power stroke. wich is y the 2 stroke is more powerful when compaired a 250cc 4stroke and a 250cc 2 stroke. ports and piston in a 2 stroke play the role of a cam and valves of a 4 stroke. just thought id wast a couple minutes of my life writing a useless comment lol sfae riding to all and keep that rubber side down fellas

  • what year is it

  • timing chain and gears might be stripped happeneed to my friends 400 600 dollar fix

  • @atvingnut36 wow! sounds like he got the shaft, he must have had a shop do it... no way should cam, gears and chain cost 600 dollas

  • @snapfish89 yeah he got the whole works done to it nd a shop did do it

  • sounds to me like valves are loose or hanging up bent or not seating like they should could be lifters or cam noise

  • and to the guy who thinks 400ex's were 2stroke.....you obviously have never been around one, ridden one, or worked on one...lol i have had 7 of these quads and NONE of them were 2stroke. the motors were completely unchanged from 99-04 and very little afterwards. you need to do your homework before you call out somebody like that.

  • i have been racing 4 wheelers for 15 years most of them Hondas and most of those 400ex's. that sounds just like a worn timing chain. but the valves need to be set when the engine is cold, that can make them be out of adjustment when they would otherwise be correct. also the tensioner may not be working right to take out the slack on the timing chain.

  • timming chain and vavle

  • i have 01 400 ex so uare saying thyeonly made mine in 4 stroke and all my friends as well

  • Put that baffle back in. Messes with your jets and get a real pipe(HMF)

  • seriously...2 stroke u gotta be shitting me lmao....ooo yeaa its prolly your rototiller valve that bad hahaha........show me were any info says that a 400ex was ever a 2 stroke....it has a valve cover meaning it has valves anything thing with valves in the head is a 4 stroke

  • and it might be the rings. one of the rings may have broke and screwed the cylinder up. check and see if theres shavings of metal in the oil. if so then u might need a new cylinder, rings and slight chance of a piston.

  • 4 stroke 400s were never 2 stroke dont know who would have gotton that idea

  • @Leeandcayce the 99-03 400ex's are 2 stroke look it up!

  • @hotwireme there not 2 strokes dumbass

  • @countryboy8527 um 4 strokes have all the same components? so it still a possibility idiot its very possible a rings coulda fucked up dumb ass witch would cause those problems in any motor

  • @sportsman335 i wasnt talkin about that i said that hotwireme he said that 99-03 400ex's are 2 strokes and i said there not and 2 strokes, and 4 strokes and 2 strokes have nothing in common like 2 strokes can work upside down and 4 strokes cant

  • @hotwireme no ther not i have a 2003 and it is 4 stroke as it can be

  • @hotwireme you dipshit all 400 exs are 4 stroke from the very first one made to the very last one made

  • @hotwireme then why is my 02 running and why no expansion chamber and why it there motor oil in it man i have got alot of problems

  • mine dont do that noise and i jot a 440 with 12:1 je piston stage 3 hot cams and shorter valve guides and my intake clearance is set at .005 and exhaust at .006

  • all 4 strokes sound like shit

  • @TheSolonigga its a 2 stroke not 4 dumbass

  • @hotwireme cant say ive ever seen a 2 stroke 400ex man. looks and sounds alot like 4 stroke to me

  • @guitarist41991 well thats the 99-03 400ex. those are 2 strokes but sound like 4. the 04-now are 4 strokes.

  • Comment removed

  • @hotwireme such a fail

  • Comment removed

  • @hotwireme are people really arguing if this is 2 or 4 stroke, that's really simple to answer, it is a 4 stroke, you can see this just by looking at the exhaust the fact it has no expansion chamber on it means as a 2 stroke it would run like shit if at all. not to mention no 2 stroke sounds like that . simple, if you think this is 2 stroke you're wrong.

  • @SatanicToChristians im not wrong look it up. its the way honda did it. and its only on the 99-03 400ex. every other one is a true 4. this particular one is 2 and the exaust dont matter dude it matters if u know ur shit. i work and rebuild the atv/dirtbike motors i know

  • @hotwireme lol, you fail Jr, you show me I'm wrong, after all I'm not the one who thinks a 4 stroke is a 2 stroke.. should be easy for an expert like you to show me.

I challenge you to show me even 1 mechanical valve terrain on any 2 stroke motor, kinda defeats the purpose.. and yes if you want to tune the motor for any performance you need an expansion chamber. as far as the 99 trx400ex Honda TRX400EX Engine:

    Engine Type 397cc RFVC air-cooled dry-sump single-cylinder four-stroke.

  • @hotwireme i had an 01 there all 4 stroke and a 99 it was four stoke also

  • @hotwireme no, its a 4 stroke u stupid bitch

  • if it was recently rebuilt check your piston. it could be backwards and smacking the valves because the grooves dont line up correctly. if its not been rebuilt check your timing chain bearings ect.

  • Maybe it's because you took off the spark arrester

  • Its prolly cuz you have a gay twist throttle

  • It sounds just like my 400 which had a sloppy piston and it's the same year roughly

  • its your timing chain check if you got metal shavings in your oil if you do you will need a new sprocket and a timing chain-- cost me $400 to fix i have a 2002 400ex it happened to me

  • Well it could be your timing chain or you got piston slap my 2000 ticked but when I reved it up it stopped and if it were the chain it would keep ticking as you get up on it

  • @brownieCAL51 its the timing chain. my 300ex was doing the same.

  • your timing chain prolly.

  • mine just recently got rebuilt (carb boot cracked and sucked in sand and water and chewed up the rings and the cylinder but still ran perfect while smoking like crazy) and the decompresser got pressed off but it still makes a rattling sound at high rpm. the head and valves still looked brand new (its a 2000... cant beat honda quality) so i really cant figure it out. some people said rocks in the skid plates but i took em completely off and it still did it!! i cant figure it out

  • i wouldnt wory bout it my quad has been doin that since i bought it never had a problem and the guy who owned it before me owned it for about 20 years and its been doing it since

  • hey everone ive got a 2003 honda 400ex with a slip on Fmf powercore 4 exhaust and i took the spark arrester out and threw it away! it sounds so badass but will it hurt my motor bad enough to need a rebuild or anything?

  • @03Honda400ex no not at all

  • @03Honda400ex fuck no

  • mine was screeling a bit and so i took it apart and found out my cam had a shot bearing.

  • yupp mine makes that sound and so does my 150f and 230f..

  • its called a motor running i think lol jp yah no worries all honda make tht noise

  • just the noise all hondas make bro

  • typical honda

  • its called the honda rattle its normal lol dont trip

  • lifter slap. yes the lifters for the valves are loose. if you know how to do this you can do it but take it in if you don't!

    -Luciffer420

  • stretched timing chain

  • dude chill its nothing to be worried about my 2004 400ex does the same thing and ive had it since new and nothing has happened yet

  • timing chain.

  • use a short length of broom handle against you ear and put the other end on parts of the motor, should give you a good idea where the prob is.

  • get a length of old broom handle, make sure it's smooth against your ear. hold one end with your fist tight against your ear place the other end firmly against various parts of the engine, you should be able to hear any bearings or other parts knocking that shouldn't be. i first saw this done by a bloke on a honda 750 four years back, he was checking out the crank bearings, they heard them rumbling and had to strip the motor and change them.

  • could be the timing chain-try tightening the adjuster for it-

  • It could be a valve that is bent.

  • timing chain.

  • my polaris sport 400 makes a similar noise.but it runs fine.and my old honda foreman 400 made that noise since i bought it.but i've had it for 5 years and nuthin ever happened to it ,your fine.

  • is this a twist throttle ?

  • mine did that and i know alot of 400ex's tht do the same i couldnt find it so i just got it rebuilt and bored to a 416 and now i have no problems but im not the mechanic by anymean i just ride lol

  • lol nice one brety

  • i think its the piston going up and down

  • ok the dumbass that said the timing chain is loose is fucking stupid if that was the case it would not run right and or rev correctly and you would know it dude ur quad sounds fine it really is supose to sound like that

  • your front tires are on backwards btw and it sounds bad . put the baffle back in

  • u jackass its supose to do that

  • uhh another reason maybe u should get a slip on exhaust atleast instead of taking ur baffle out..u lose power when u take that out a litle bit..and it sounds like junk ....you need ur valves adjusted kid!

  • have u checked your oil

  • shut the fuck up stupid little kid.. check your moms pussy for fleas

  • the timing chain might be to lose

  • my uncle works as a mechanic i had the same prob and its ur baffle the motor dont got enough pressure

  • its not the baffle

theres even less pressure when you put an aftermarket pipe

you just have to rejet when you remove the baffle

same thing for a aftermarket pipe

  • put the god damn baffle back in god it sounds like shit. get an hmf.

  • put your baffler back in and check your timing chain and adjust you valves

  • its your baffle there is not enough pressure for your motor

  • I would say timing chain, mine has sounded that way for about 6 months and i race mine and she still runs fine.

  • put your baffle back in and get a new timing chain or timing chain tensioner

if you can afford rims, plastic, and all the other stuff you can afford a much better sounding pipe for like $50 or something and it helps performance alot

  • my 2001 400ex had that issue, it was my timing chain tensionor, don't ride it until u replace that, mine blewup from it, bent all 4 valves.

  • everyone says it the timeing chain blah blah blah these 400ex/xr400 motors are know for haveing rocker/subrocker/arm problems

  • my recon has the same noise i thought it was normal haha

  • lol they're bulletproof

  • i say it sounds like the chain is loose

  • you have a broken chain tenss. replace assembly she will queit down

  • crankshaft

  • your timing chain is loose i hadthe same problem with my 530ex

  • i thinks its that 2

  • replace the timing chain and cam chain tensioner.

  • if you have your end cap in you will get more power

  • possibly its a spun crank bearing but mostlikely timing chainis loose

  • sounds fine beside baffle i ride mine with the same noise and it still runs forever its just the timing chain

  • your valves are a little bit to tight and you need some kind of baffle or after market exhaust 400 ex's run off of backpressure

  • sounds fine? just ride it

  • get ur valves adujted and a new timing chain and a baffle

  • Valves

  • i had a new cam installed on my scrambler and it makes that tapping noise all the time now

  • mi have the same quad and it sounds funny too but runs good

  • put your spark arrestor back in , your not getting enough compression in your engine.

  • just put 3+ jets in and will run fine

  • timing chain

  • yea it's the timing chain

  • my ozark does that but its just the valves, they need ajusted

  • sounds like the valves or your timing chain is loose

  • its timing chain its lose

  • put your spark arrestor back on

  • my mojave is making the same noise i forgot to put oil in it so a put lucus and it went away

  • sounds normal, all i hear is pistons..

  • I have a Suzuki z400 And it was knocking it was the timeing chain i fixed it the RIGHT way because the guy who had it before me was half tarted and dident put it together right

  • that sounds like shit!!!

  • thats normal my 400ex did the same thing and i redid the whole motor in it cause i thought i screwed something up bad so i put about 800 bucks into it and it still made the same noise

  • me to ur rite all do that

  • your alright mine sounds the same

  • is that muffler bad? i have the same one

  • if u listen closly to all off road dirt bikes and quads they all make a noice sort of like that but nice quad!

  • I have a 2002 400ex stock bore with a wiseco high compression piston the guy that put the piston in honed the cylinder to 4,000 clearance to make sure it was smooth cuz the stock piston rings went bad. Anyway mine makes the same noise and its perfectly ok its just cuz of the extra clearance on the cyliner. It def makes some racket though but it runs like a champ i've had no problems with it in 5 years. hope this helps!

  • all atvs do that

  • i love that plastic....mine clicks like that to i dont no why though...

  • that sucks bro, thats why i dotn fuck with that complicated ass four stroke garbage

    2 stroke all day nigga

  • 2 stroke are good but 4 sroke have all the power all the time

  • yea i guess but, if you crack a piston in a 2 stroke, its a quick rebuid, you crack a valve or some shit like that, it could fuck your whole shit up, theres too much shit in 4 stroke motors, and i love being the obnoxious kid on an annoying 2 stroke haha

  • lol everything that former posters said is wrong... you took out your baffel right. Well itts you valves and top end. You need to have back presure in your exhaust system. have you timeing and valvs regaped and timed. your 400ex will be as good as new if you put you baffel back in and do what i said. My 400ex is an 05 then the bearings and bushings in the swingarm went and i couldnt get the bolt holding the swingarm on the motor and frame out i traded it in on a new 08 400ex white and black

  • i have a 2001 400ex with the same noise and it was the bearing on the rod. it might be that. i wouldnt ride it anymore till u got it fixed

  • dude get that fixed....mine was doing that like 2 weeks ago, i got a 2001 400ex and my 4 valves are now bent, need new timing chain and timing chain tensioner and rocker arms cus of it...

  • ok it is going to be the piston slapin apart watch my vid and u will see

  • i have an 07 400ex and my bike made the same noise and my local dealer said it was my ehaust about mid way through it was loose. they tightened it and it was good. you might want to check that... it might not seem loose but it still could be

  • check you timing chain it might of jumped time a little bit but not enough to destroy anything

  • You need to tighten the timing chain, I'm pretty sure its manually adjusted on the XR engines

  • cam, or maybe your crank is startin to go... might wanna get that checked out.

  • yea mine had that two and i just left it but turns out it skipped a tooth on the cam and my piston smashed my exhaust valves

  • did you rebuilded it ??

  • im in the process now i had to get new valves and putting a 440 kit in

  • Comment removed

  • its the cam chain bud its common on honda dirt bikes and quads adjust it or your valves will be smashed if it braeaks! hondas are shit! yamaha and suzuki are the best for racing and dont gimme bull shit the new honda atvs are shit after the early 90s they started getting bad cus no one was buying them cus back in the day hondas lasted to long but now they use cheaper materials in their desighn to prevent this my buddy owns a dealership and he told me. and its true.

  • just by looking at your engine i can tell you dont take care of it.

  • it sounds like maybe a rocker arm get it fixed fast before it groves your cam

  • o fuck don't worry about it.. my cr125 has a little knock. wait till she blows up

  • piston chatter

  • ya its your timing chain i have that problem too

  • posibly a rod bearing if its loud near the case its a rod bearing

  • I have the same noise I also have a video up. My moms boyfriend told me to adjust the cam chain.

  • well i think it could be ur timing chain also because i rebiult my motor and i replaced everything but the timing chain and guides and it makes a tickin noise but it runs great!!!

  • Its fine

  • what model is that???

  • nothing wrong with it.. most of them have this nnoise . i got mine brand new and it had it and it runs fine

  • I agree that its the timing chain

  • u need a new timing chain and timing chain guide.trust me.mine did the same thing and and i put a new one in and it stopped
