It would have been an awesome ending with all the birds on the Golden Gate Bridge, but it would have created a less ambiguous ending which is what makes The Birds frightening.
I'm not sure which ending would be better, while this ending explains a little bit more the ending they used leaves a lot to the imagination and it also leaves a lot of questions
Great movie, saw it yesterday. Just a little strange when the 'ending' kicks in though, I thought there would be some explanation as to why the birds attacked but the film just ends when you wouldn't expect it. Awesome scenes but a little cheap to end a movie without a conclusion whatsoever...
The birds were revolting against the dominant species (us). I don't think it's about Melanie or the town, it just started there. Even if it started because of the caged lovebirds, it wouldn't matter in the long run because they weren't going to stop. The ending where they talk about attacks in nearby towns shows it's starting to spread.
At least that's what I think. I haven't seen it in years.
The Birds movie was based on a short story by Daphne DuMaurier. The story is about birds attacking a seaside town, and a man fortifying his home against the bird attacks, which happen every few hours. The attacks last for seemingly endless minutes, then stop suddenly. In between the attacks, the man tries to figure out what is going on, and keeps working while trying to anticipate the next attack. It is a great story--no reason for the attacks is given there either.
I'm glad they didn't use this ending. The ending that Hitchcock went with is much better. You guys are only saying this "original ending" is better because you haven't seen it and are curious. But the fact that it's left up to the imagination is so much better.
@ChrisMagoo99 I agree, but at the same time this ending was a bit too sudden for me, so I ended up laughing in frustration. I think it would have been better if they had used the idea about the bridge being covered by birds!
@ChrisMagoo99 I agree. I think Hitchcock ended it perfectly. We're too used to having everything spoon-fed, illustrated and explained to us these days instead of allowing our imaginations to work.
Me huviese encantado ver eso, pero me huviera causado aun MAS miedo XD . . . Menos mal que tenia un gato de apollo mientras veia la pelicula.... (El estaba dormido XDU)
I think Hitch's version was better--sounds like this ending would be setting up for a whole other movie--more zombie apocalypse type movie. I like that there aren't any explanations given for the behavior of the birds or why they are centered on Bodega Bay. Maybe Melanie IS evil???
Interesting idea, but the ending in the actual movie was good. I really liked the suspense and the undefined fate at the end, it was really up to the viewers to decide whether or not they survived/made it to SF/etc....
My sentiments exactly, i stood up half the night scrolling through my set top box to see if there was a continuation of this movie, when i couldnt find it i was darn mad with NTV because i thought they cut the movie spitefully, well now i know, THAT PRODUCER SHOULD HAVE BEEN SHOT

@mywifesafag I interpreted the alternative ending with the Golden Gate Bridge in some sort of paperposter, the way I see it :-) it isn't perfect, but I think it captures the feeling I got from the movie. Maybe you'll get a little satisfaction through that ^^! You can see it on my channel (I can't seem to post the link here). Greetings!
I think Hitchcock went with the ending that he did because Melanie was the catalyst for the bird attacks due to being the outsider which brought out hostility in people. So the bird attacks were a metaphor.
So once Mitch's mother accepted her and they struck up a surrogate mother/daughter relationship he would want to reflect that with the birds and show resolution
If he went with this ending I suppose it might be too much like another by the numbers corny action film.
That's pretty insightful. And Melanie's presence squelched any chance for Ms. Hayworth to get with Mitch. Then the birds took her out of the way or Melanie took her out of the way.
I don't think Melanie is the cause. She was just boating up with the love birds, Mitch and Family were checking out the chickens who already Were NOT eating the feed they jut bought.
i actually like the other ending better. at least there's a suggestion that they could have made it through. with this ending? the birds taking over the world? there's no hope at all.
Wait, the world? Wouldn't this ending suggest that the birds were limited to the town? As if the town, altogether, had to go; like extinction. With the birds falling back, it would seem that way.
I like the original ending better, this proposed ending would of made it seem less of a person story of Melanie Daniels as we have so far seen the events through her eyes. Plus I like the idea that she was some how the cause of it, if it was an attack happeing every where to every one, it would have lost that illusion.

that's a good point that all the chaos was really focused on Melanie
the ending he described sounds really good though I'd like to see it
but I'm real glad Hitch chose the ending he did
it's a lot more mysterious and probably a lot more horrifying
