  • Hi, I run debian6.03 on an older computer and have pretty much the same problems with symantic , you have to give your root password and then ;;nothing happens i can't update !! i am new to linux so i don't know anything of commands, sudo and stuff .shoud i re-install ? or wait for the next debian thanks

  • @geertvdh1

hhmmmm. strange... I can't remember now if i had that problem or not LoL

but try opening a terminal, "su" password then "aptitude update"

That will update your system... try synaptic next time to see if it is working again I guess

  • I've been wanting to use this version but i can't seem to get my Nvidia Graphics card to work at all...so until than I'll have to stay on a 6 month release

  • @Technoobzdotcom Try the following in terminal. sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx, sudo apt-get install nvidia-settings, sudo apt-get install nvidia-xconfig, REBOOT, sudo nvidia-xconfig, LOGOUT, sudo nvidia-settings

  • I run Debian testing on a few of my computers and it's working really well ^_- As far as Debian Mint I think it's great idea :) Perhaps I will try the next version of Debian Mint when the bugs are worked out. Thank you for sharing the "in detail" problems that you had. Very good review mate :) I'm sure your helping allot of people ^_-

  • @TheGeo913

thanx man. I try to be non biased and report on the positive and negatives of distros I try.

    cheers :d

  • @Linux4UnMe You do a great job mate! Yeah I've checked out your videos and I enjoy the way you point out the goods and the bads of the distros ^_-

  • Linux Mint is really cool, although I prefer to have an option to actually remove Firefox without also removing "Linux Mint artwork" ...

LMDE would be cool as well, but it kinda crashed after upgrading.

  • @ytuser13082011

didn't know that removing firefox removes mint artwork? o_0

    never tried

  • @Linux4UnMe - I forgot to mention I run Mint XFCE. Gnome is probobly more modularized.

  • I might wait a while until Mint Debian improves a bit for stability and makes things more like an Ubuntu based system, I'll stick with Mint 9 for a while since its an LTS.

  • @Ubuntufrog

yeah. next couple of versions should sort out lmde

  • Mint will use staged repositories, I've heard they will release every 4 weeks. I think this is the way Sabyon works also, which is also a rolling (but gentoo based) & that seems pretty stable. If they pull it off it could be a real winner.

  • Hi, so here's the story: I switched from ubuntu 10.10 to lmde about a month ago, didn't want 11.04 (I hate unity). I've had a lot of issues with lmde and I removed it today. (1) Setting up the nvidia drivers was hard (had to reinstall the OS 2-3 times to get it right) (2) Software is buggy (vlc wont close unless I manually kill the process) (3) Lack of software in the repositories (e.g. lmms and even wine! althougth wine got fixed). (4) Didn't have proper sound on sites other than youtube etc

  • @NikosIbanezRG

yer I hear ya.... Debian Testing is a bit Dodge imo.... I am always able to find workarounds when I run into problems but I wouldn't recommend it for somebody who just wants everything to work out of the box..... as for the lack of software part... you have to manually add the non free repos in Debian... I can't remember if mint did it by default or not? Otherwise debian has some 30,000+ packages in the repos like Ubuntu does... and there are plenty of 3rd party repos

  • @water4fuelh20

not the main edition man... the other versions yes

  • @water4fuelh20

I think you are mistaken my friend.... mint have no plans to turn the main edition into a debian base... otherwise PM me a link to that information

  • @water4fuelh20

I have not heard any confirmation that mint are switching to a debian base for the main edition.... Some of the other respins are though

  • while it's cool that LMDE is working on being more user friendly, I find anything that runs debian or very close to it like LMDE is more for the advanced user that knows their way around, and/or a dual booter that might be learning the more advanced stuff while still sticking to an easier distro spin like the regular Mint or ubuntu for everything else. I am glad that the Mint team has a Debian edition and this was a great look at it. keep up the awesome work!

  • @experimental0000

    cheers

With a bit of work... they will make lmde as easy to use as the main edition... they already have some plans to fix the common issues ;)

  • @alanstryder

I remember glancing at that a while ago... The date on that blog is in early July and yet these problems still exist in the RC.... I doubt the issues will be fixed by the time the Stable release comes out and updated... but we'll see. If so i'll update my video...Thanx

  • Im about to ask a very dumb question.. And it might not make much sense either.. Just putting that out there first. Lol

So, since LM is based on ubuntu, it shares ubuntu's repos. I've tried debian before and it doesnt have the amount of packages ubuntu/LM has. But does LMDE use debian repos only or does it also have more packages than regular debian like the ubuntu-based LM has?

  • @sleepee11 Debian doesn't have the same amount of software Ubuntu has like you said. So more likely yes

  • @74ryanwolf

oh ok... idk why, but for some crazy reason, i thought maybe LM might would repackage some of the ubuntu-based software for the debian edition..

stupid question... and wishful thinking... lol!

  • @sleepee11

Debian does not have the non free repos enabled by default where as ubuntu does... that is why it looked like debian didn't have as many packages as ubuntu... but indeed debian has it all

  • Nice review. I had great experiences with the Ubuntu based Mint distros, but no luck whatsoever with anything Mint that is Debian based. On my last install everything looked perfect, but the updater finally killed the install. Never had these problems with anything else Debian based. I just hope Mint doesn't completely switch over to Debian in the future. My Mint 11 runs as perfect as it can be without any issues whatsoever.

  • I'm still trying to find an OS that is right for me and still haven't succeeded in my mission.

  • Ubuntu is better

  • ahhhhhh there we go. There's my 20+ Dislikes. Cheers Timmy boy.... bout time

  • @Linux4UnMe Curse of the box-opener strikes again!!!!

  • Only 1 dislike so far... where is Osgui/Osytech Tim to give me 20+ thumbs downs? lmao. Still waiting in anticipation. hahaha

  • @Linux4UnMe I believe its national sticker day in Melbourne, I'm sure he hasn't forgotten about you

  • @Linux4UnMe aww come on dude cut it out. give it a rest yeah? We're all here for linux and to learn new things about linux. We're not here to flame anyone and I'm here because I enjoy your videos. Leave the fighting to the youtube troll comments and elementary school.

  • @dynetrax

Hey... I am being quite Humourous about it... Most people wouldn't if it was their videos getting spammemd with dislikes

  • @Linux4UnMe I would personally just ignore anyone being negative towards me but thats me, I dont know what ever happened between you and tim but as long as you arent retaliating then he can make an ass of himself being childish, if it really is him spamming dislike, i dont know if it shows you who exactly likes or dislikes your videos because i've never posted any.

  • @dynetrax Aww yeah because 27:1 is a dismal ratio.

  • @dynetrax While that is true...some of us don't feel that it's "community" based, and some of us are just in it for the money. Like a certain...GUI I know. The more and more I see of him, the more I realize he's the Apple of the linux video making world. Wants to create a monopoly and act like everyone copies him.

  • yo dude, its just called LMDE not LMDE 11, because its a rolling release mint ditched the 9.10.11 etc they use for the Ubuntu releases.

I couldn't recreate your issues in Debian stable with dvdrip guvc etc, although I did add the multimedia non-free to /etc/apt/sources.list and run aptitude update.

Anyway good video thumbs up :)

  • @BelaFleckFan

Copied and pasted from the linuxmint website matey :P

  • @BelaFleckFan spam?

  • Comment removed

  • Sadly i never seem to have much luck with Linux Mint debian,For some reason every time i try installing it i seem to have no end of problems...But the main version of Linux Mint based on Ubuntu works perfectly evreytime right out of the box...

  • @OmenX13

yeah I always find things that don't work right on the debian version :(

  • Thank you very much for this overview man. I almost installed this, but I've read that it's hard to mount some partitions after the installation and that push me back a little. Hope one day this distro could be more user friendly. Cheers!

  • @fruchesi

    no probs :) thanx

  • Great Video dude ,However although I'm sure Debian Linux mint is fine for some people I'm glad Clem is keeping Linux Mint Ubuntu around. Now on a different note are you using open shot ,or Kdenlive to make this Video. Also can you recommend a Video camera that can work with Ubuntu based distros?

  • @Linuxmint44

Yeah I use KdenLive most of the time, and OpenShot sometimes....

As for a recommended Vid cam... no idea... ya might have to google into that one ;)

    cheers

  • Looks good!
