Actually, I'm a Progressive Democrat. I think a lot of Ron Paul's ideas are from the far loonie libertarian viewpoint. It's pretty clear that Glen Beck has a Neocon / Republican bias and certainly not a Liberal / Democratic bias. And my point is that Glen Beck is completely two-faced.
Are you a Ron Paul supporter? Many Progressive Democrats are. The reason I ask is because Paul is basically libertarian. Can't understand why progressive democrats would support him, since Paul takes a minimalist view when it comes to governmental power. Something progressive Dems would find hard to swallow.
I know Ron Paul is an Market Anachist Libertarian. I like his balanced budget fiscal policies, but I don't like how he wants to balance it. What I don't like is that he feels that the Free Market's invisible hand will solve everything. The problem with that is that the free market is reactive and not proactive.

One of the biggest flaws in free markets and capitalism is that they cause a surplus in the market. This is why companies have to cut corners to bring their manufacturing prices down. This causes profit in the next quarter to be more important than long term sustainability. Understanding this is what makes capitalists rich. They squeeze the money out of everything - for themselves.
Market forces changed when large scale corporations were introduced. Instead of supplying demand they now create unneeded demand. Salesmen don't ask what you want but tell you in ads. People homeless while a new line a tickle me elmos are introduced.
Imagine how many homeless there would be without large scale corporations. Corporations create jobs. Fact is, there are over 6 billion people on this planet. Only large corporations have the economies of scale and mass to service the needs of the masses. If we had to rely on Mom and Pop shops nowadays, there would be mass starvation.

America under FDR was capitalist, with high federal spending, it's the same as today, nothing has changed. Reagan inherited a miserable economy from Carter, economy in the 80's was much improved over the late 70's.

No, because I think this is a bad comparison. America has seen tremendous growth since the days of FDR. FDR is credited with bringing America out of the depression by establishing federal work programs and of course the World War II. I say it's a bad comparison because people are better off today than they were during the Nixon era. Just as people were better off in the 60's than they were in the 1930's. Not because of FDR vs Nixon, but because America was a richer nation.
Nixon spent a lot of money on running the Vietnam war that Kennedy started with a fake incident. He also ended it. However, the economy was really not roaring in the Nixon era (1969-1974) and Carter was saddled with huge inflation that all of Nixon's government spending caused. Borrowing to fight wars competes with the capital needs of businesses.
You said Carter's economy sucked because of Nixon's war debt. My point was Carter had 4 years to fix it. By the end of Carter's term we had ultra high inflation and high unemployment. So I blame Carter. Reagan fixed both those problems relatively quickly.
Small businesses are part of capitalism and free markets. It's private ownership, something you don't get if the government is providing the goods and services. But you still need big corporations. Big corporations make the computer you use to read this message. Or the service for your cell phone, or the car you drive. Small business are better at some things, while large corporations are better at other things. All part of our free market system.
I'm not advocating having the government provide goods and services - communism has it's flaws as well. What I am pointing out is that unbridled capitalism is destructive to competition. It has more to do with monopoly building than true competition. Competition is good while monopolies are not.
Actually, big corporations market computers. Small assembly shops in China make the computers. Those shops often hire children and pay people near slave labor wages. While the prices may be good to the consumer, other things like poverty and pollution are other side effects of uncontrolled capitalism.
China has lots of ethical issues, but their economy is thriving. Will overtake us eventually. We can make the computers here, problem is no one will buy them when they can get foreign products cheaper. A South Korean company could have China build the computers and sell them here at a fraction of the cost. No American company could compete, they'd go out of business. Then those workers lose their jobs. So what did it get you? That's the reality of the world market.

Let's be real. Free Markets/Capitalism is the most efficient and productive system known to man. What progressives really hate about it is it creates economic disparity. Granted, but free markets have always been better adept at dealing with poverty issues than other economic models. The downside is you get some Bill Gates and Warren Buffets, but humanity benefits far more under capitalism. Besides, the super rich usually give most of their money to charity anyway.

Actually, I don't think you understand the Progressive Democrats' stance on illegal aliens. They would like to prosecute the C-level officers of the company and the people that are responsible for hiring the illegals. Yes, I would expect the guest workers to be paid the same wages. American citizens would get first dibs on jobs. Employers hiring non guest workers would be punished. There would be no path to citizenship for guest workers, and if they should have a child born in the US, that child would not get US citizenship.

A free market is not a complete panacea. There are upsides and downsides to every economic system. The duplication of efforts does cause a surplus in the market. Items are priced at what the market will bear. On the other hand, a planned economy can't properly price items or know how many to bring to market.
Many of the people that work at Walmart really don't have the freedom of labor that you think exists. Especially when Walmart has flooded the market with goods priced below their cost. Furthermore, the people making the goods have to work 12 hours a day for mere pennies. It's a bit of pocket change to keep it from being slavery. There is no economic freedom in China.
Unfortunately, Walmart relies on the fact that there is always a surplus of labor because there is no such thing as full employment. If you want to form a union to protect yourself from their tyranny, they bring the corporate jet in and close the store if need be. Things are not as simple as you think.
Walmart actually does NOT pay competitive wages. Here in Washington, Costco, Target and smaller stores pay better and have better benefits. Penn and Teller are not investigative journalists, they are foul-mouthed comedians. Apparently you don't understand anything about anti-competitive practices like dumping to drive competitors out of business.
Im not saying they are investigative journalists, but I am saying they bring up a good point. Walmart has had some dirty tactics- yes. And they get their asses hauled to court when they do wrong. But they are a business, and they run it very competitively.

I lived in a town that got wiped out by a mall that opened in a neighboring town. The retail stores could not compete. Eventually the town came back, new stores opened. Lots became restaurants, or antique shops, unique stores that you don't find in the malls. Another town that also got devastated by that mall, revitalized itself by opening a Walmart. It cuts both ways. In fact, I can't say I know of any town destroyed by Walmart.
Walmart is a huge corporate giant that retails more than one specific genre of products. The economical death of privately run stores in the wake of Walmart's substantially lower prices (due to 3rd world production) is a little more crippling than when a new mall opens a town over. Unless that mall includes a Sams or Super Walmart. Walmart is also a government subsidized corporation which gives them unfair leverage when competing against the private business sector.

I am amazed that so few of the people posting here have a understanding of the role of the Federal government. When money is collected by the Federal government and then returned to the states, very little comes back with too many regulations.
From reading the posts here i am amazed that so few of the people posting here have a understanding of the role of the federal government. As far as helping people dependent due to medical, disabilities, age, truley in need of assistance, the state and local governments do a far superior job. When money is returned to the states after passing through the filter of the federal government less than half comes back, with controlls and mandates that add to the cost.
You make a good point. Hillary acts like there are poor people laying around dying who have no medical care, when the states have been providing health care for the poor all my life. It's middle class people who can't get insurance because they get no help and are taxed to take care of health care for the poor.

My family and I will get by, but I've worked in construction most of my life, and I either have no insurance, or lose it when I change jobs, which just happens to be part of the job.

I'm glad that the Ron Paul crowd is out there. However, I think that his Anarcho-Libertarianism is going to leave poor people much poorer and without a safety net. I'm not sure returning to a wild-west "every man for himself" style of living is going to get any barns raised. I believe that the whole is better than the sum of its parts.

It was tried in the 19th century, and made even facory workers richer than most people were just 50-80 years before. I'm talking food, shelter and clothes. Laissez faire didn't last long in England. It was never tried in Prussia, for example, which was one of the most important countries. It was never tried in Russia, nor in Spain. It lived in the US and that's why it became the wealthiest nation on earth.
The ultimate problem with Laissez faire is inherent in it's name (French for leave it alone) Laissez faire assumes that a market will regulate itself. The strong entities get larger, forcing their competition out of business to get even larger. Eventually, all that remains is one or two monopoly companies and the smaller businesses and workers falling by the wayside.

On a practical level he realizes that you need to transition out, but on a philosophical level he recognizes that stealing from Peter to pay Paul is not moral. Actually, I'm a Progressive Democrat. I think a lot of Ron Paul's ideas are from the far loonie libertarian viewpoint. It's pretty clear that Glen Beck has a Neocon / Republican bias and certainly not a Liberal / Democratic bias. And my point is that Glen Beck is completely two-faced.

Are you a Ron Paul supporter? Many Progressive Democrats are. The reason I ask is because Paul is basically libertarian. Can't understand why progressive democrats would support him, since Paul takes a minimalist view when it comes to governmental power. Something progressive Dems would find hard to swallow.

I know Ron Paul is an Market Anachist Libertarian. I like his balanced budget fiscal policies, but I don't like how he wants to balance it. What I don't like is that he feels that the Free Market's invisible hand will solve everything. The problem with that is that the free market is reactive and not proactive.

milofonbil is right but I have yet to meet a Paul supporter that understands this. There has been more wealth concentration at the top 5% ever since Reagan--the New Deal was the only major (lasts more then a single digit of years) that the wealth concretion in America became more egalitarian. Markets are perfect for manufacturing wants not needs.

One of the biggest flaws in free markets and capitalism is that they cause a surplus in the market. This is why companies have to cut corners to bring their manufacturing prices down. This causes profit in the next quarter to be more important than long term sustainability. Understanding this is what makes capitalists rich. They squeeze the money out of everything - for themselves.

Market forces changed when large scale corporations were introduced. Instead of supplying demand they now create unneeded demand. Salesmen don't ask what you want but tell you in ads. People homeless while a new line a tickle me elmos are introduced.

America under FDR was capitalist, with high federal spending, it's the same as today, nothing has changed. Reagan inherited a miserable economy from Carter, economy in the 80's was much improved over the late 70's.

Let me make my point: Communism bad. Fascism Bad. Did they create profitable economies, yes. Russia went from a third world nation to a communist state that had the fastest growth rate since Ancient Rome. Ancient Rome was not a good place to be either (at least not by today's standards). Now Russia is undergoing capitalist reforms that are driving them rate back into the third world were they came from. Does that mean capitalism is bad? I think no but your argument was that wealth makes right.

I happened to believe that the welfare of the citizens makes a nation great. Now research America's economic history. FDR to Nixon was the most egalitarian movement in our nation's history (economist call it the Great Compression). Since Reagan, America surpassed Europe with a higher aristocracy. Must of you conservatives only go by a nation's power and wealth and think this can not coincide egalitarian welfare but FDR proved you wrong.

Socialism is dead. Compare former E. Germany to West Germany. Russia and China have moved towards a more free market economic model and they've benefited greatly. In fact, they had to do it out of necessity. At least Russians aren't waiting in line for 8 hours for a loaf of bread anymore. Socialism is dead. It doesn't work.

No, because I think this is a bad comparison. America has seen tremendous growth since the days of FDR. FDR is credited with bringing America out of the depression by establishing federal work programs and of course the World War II. I say it's a bad comparison because people are better off today than they were during the Nixon era. Just as people were better off in the 60's than they were in the 1930's. Not because of FDR vs Nixon, but because America was a richer nation.

Nixon spent a lot of money on running the Vietnam war that Kennedy started with a fake incident. He also ended it. However, the economy was really not roaring in the Nixon era (1969-1974) and Carter was saddled with huge inflation that all of Nixon's government spending caused. Borrowing to fight wars competes with the capital needs of businesses.

You said Carter's economy sucked because of Nixon's war debt. My point was Carter had 4 years to fix it. By the end of Carter's term we had ultra high inflation and high unemployment. So I blame Carter. Reagan fixed both those problems relatively quickly.

Small businesses are part of capitalism and free markets. It's private ownership, something you don't get if the government is providing the goods and services. But you still need big corporations. Big corporations make the computer you use to read this message. Or the service for your cell phone, or the car you drive. Small business are better at some things, while large corporations are better at other things. All part of our free market system.

Actually, big corporations market computers. Small assembly shops in China make the computers. Those shops often hire children and pay people near slave labor wages. While the prices may be good to the consumer, other things like poverty and pollution are other side effects of uncontrolled capitalism.

China has lots of ethical issues, but their economy is thriving. Will overtake us eventually. We can make the computers here, problem is no one will buy them when they can get foreign products cheaper. A South Korean company could have China build the computers and sell them here at a fraction of the cost. No American company could compete, they'd go out of business. Then those workers lose their jobs. So what did it get you? That's the reality of the world market.

Small businesses actually create more jobs than do larger corporations. Large corporations actually are encouraged by stockholders to minimize the number of employees they have. Walmart takes this to an extreme by forcing its employees to work through their breaks and work off the clock.

Let's be real. Free Markets/Capitalism is the most efficient and productive system known to man. What progressives really hate about it is it creates economic disparity. Granted, but free markets have always been better adept at dealing with poverty issues than other economic models. The downside is you get some Bill Gates and Warren Buffets, but humanity benefits far more under capitalism. Besides, the super rich usually give most of their money to charity anyway.

Free Market Capitalism has a lot of waste due to a duplication of effort. And, yes, it creates a huge disparity. The Walton family (Walmart) gives nearly nothing to charities. They don't even pay their employees enough to afford to get off of food stamps and other public handouts. I'm not sure people are better off with a system that rewards slavery.

As for Walmart, how can they be slaves? It's not like they are forced to work there. If I didn't think I was getting a fair deal by my employer, I'd look elsewhere. If Walmart couldn't get people to do the work, they'd be forced to increase wages.

Actually, I don't think you understand the Progressive Democrats' stance on illegal aliens. They would like to prosecute the C-level officers of the company and the people that are responsible for hiring the illegals. They feel this would be far more effective than going after the illegals and/or building a wall border wall.

I am an immigrant myself. I went through the legal process of coming here with a visa, getting a green card and then becoming naturalized.
I am all in favor for a legal process for people to come here. If you believe in a Free Market, you believe in selling your products across borders without barriers. Doesn't it make sense to allow people to sell their services across borders without barriers?

i like my plan better. let them apply as guest workers. employers hire citizens first. then go to the pool of guest workers that are paid equivalent wages. any employer hiring illegals or workers not documented as guest, are penalized.

Ok... we have some common ground here. I take it they would be allowed to apply for a guest worker visa. Like the current work visas, you would allow US Citizens first. That makes sense. Yes, I would expect the guest workers to be paid the same wages. American citizens would get first dibs on jobs. Employers hiring non guest workers would be punished. There would be no path to citizenship for guest workers, and if they should have a child born in the US, that child would not get US citizenship.

A free market is not a complete panacea. There are upsides and downsides to every economic system. The duplication of efforts does cause a surplus in the market. Items are priced at what the market will bear. On the other hand, a planned economy can't properly price items or know how many to bring to market.

Many of the people that work at Walmart really don't have the freedom of labor that you think exists. Especially when Walmart has flooded the market with goods priced below their cost. Furthermore, the people making the goods have to work 12 hours a day for mere pennies. It's a bit of pocket change to keep it from being slavery. There is no economic freedom in China.

Walmart actually does NOT pay competitive wages. Here in Washington, Costco, Target and smaller stores pay better and have better benefits. Penn and Teller are not investigative journalists, they are foul-mouthed comedians. Apparently you don't understand anything about anti-competitive practices like dumping to drive competitors out of business.

Im not saying they are investigative journalists, but I am saying they bring up a good point. Walmart has had some dirty tactics- yes. And they get their asses hauled to court when they do wrong. But they are a business, and they run it very competitively.
If the workers are so mistreated, why don't they leave the company? Because they at least offer a job, and thats a hell of a lot better than the alternative.

leaving the company does not solve the problem in many cases. When Walmart comes into a town it leaves a wake of dead companies in what was a thriving town. I just don't think you have ever been to a town wiped out by Walmart, have you?

I lived in a town that got wiped out by a mall that opened in a neighboring town. The retail stores could not compete. Eventually the town came back, new stores opened. Lots became restaurants, or antique shops, unique stores that you don't find in the malls. Another town that also got devastated by that mall, revitalized itself by opening a Walmart. It cuts both ways. In fact, I can't say I know of any town destroyed by Walmart.

Walmart is a huge corporate giant that retails more than one specific genre of products. The economical death of privately run stores in the wake of Walmart's substantially lower prices (due to 3rd world production) is a little more crippling than when a new mall opens a town over. Unless that mall includes a Sams or Super Walmart. Walmart is also a government subsidized corporation which gives them unfair leverage when competing against the private business sector.

I am amazed that so few of the people posting here have a understanding of the role of the Federal government. When money is collected by the Federal government and then returned to the states, very little comes back with too many regulations.

As far as helping people dependent due to medical, disabilities, age, truley in need of assistance, the state and local governments do a far superior job. When money is returned to the states after passing through the filter of the federal government less than half comes back, with controlls and mandates that add to the cost.

I have read what Dr. Paul has to say about health insurance, and he wouldn't make me dependent on HMO's, accountants, and Employers for it. My family and I will get by, but I've worked in construction most of my life, and I either have no insurance, or lose it when I change jobs, which just happens to be part of the job.

You do have COBRA insurance in the short term as an employee, but not as a contractor. And without the business subsidy, your health insurance through COBRA is unaffordable...

I'm glad that the Ron Paul crowd is out there. However, I think that his Anarcho-Libertarianism is going to leave poor people much poorer and without a safety net. I'm not sure returning to a wild-west "every man for himself" style of living is going to get any barns raised. I believe that the whole is better than the sum of its parts.

The problem with the system RP is proposing is that it will hurt a lot of people in the lower classes. He's way too far to the right in economical issues, the vibe I get from his campaign is an extreme "laissez-faire" attitude. It was tried in the 19th century in Europe and failed ... big government is not a bad thing it just needs to be well run.

It was tried in the 19th century, and made even facory workers richer than most people were just 50-80 years before. I'm talking food, shelter and clothes. Laissez faire didn't last long in England. It was never tried in Prussia, for example, which was one of the most important countries. It was never tried in Russia, nor in Spain. It lived in the US and that's why it became the wealthiest nation on earth.

The ultimate problem with Laissez faire is inherent in it's name (French for leave it alone) Laissez faire assumes that a market will regulate itself. The strong entities get larger, forcing their competition out of business to get even larger. Eventually, all that remains is one or two monopoly companies and the smaller businesses and workers falling by the wayside.

Do american people even know what we are doing in Iraq? The Green Zone is bigger then the Taj Mahal, it's heavily-guarded, self-contained resort that has pool-side drinks and country-western night. There's more contractors in Iraq then soldiers. Blackwater is their protectors, answering to no laws, quite often giving orders to our military! Attacking the "wellfare state" is not the answer. Thanks to his non-sensical war, Bush turned Clintons surplus into a deficit that my great-grandkids will have to pay for. We need to stop sending money overseas and take care of our own. I voted for Bush. Biggest mistake of my life. On a practical level he realizes that you need to transition out, but on a philosophical level he recognizes that stealing from Peter to pay Paul is not moral. If folks want to help poor people they can help voluntarily from their own pockets instead of voting for politicians who use force, i.e. taxation, to take it out of the pockets of others.

i'm tempted, NoShariaForMe, but take political hit-pieces w/ a grain of salt. agfarben obviously feels threatened by freedom or is payed by someone who's threatened. not everyone is a patriot like you. get rid of one, another takes his place. channel anger into positive energy or you'll end up consumed by hate. that would be a shame, since respect for liberty is growing at supernatural speed. i swore to defend this country twice & i'm recently becoming very proud of USA again.
