I saw all these shows. O'toole came on drunk. then a few months later carson did the big explanation and o'toole came out drunk AGAIN. then carson did his patented stare into the camera, like he was taking you into his confidence and saying, "can you believe this?" this show happened a few months after all that and he finally came out sober. all pretty harmless and funny.
Want to see Peter O'Toole at his best? Watch THE LION IN WINTER. Oscar nominated. Marvelously over-the-top, as only someone with his training and pedigree can be. Better yet: watch BECKET first, then LION. The first is an excellent appetizer for the 2nd. Incredible artistry and theatrically that they won't even shoot today.
@galesayers Did you by any chance hear of his iconic role in the iconic film 'Lawrence of Arabia'? How in the world could anyone omit that? His beautifully handsome face and his portrayal (he definitely should have won Best Actor; everyone thinks he did anyway). Heavens, who can ever forget that?
He was very ill in the mid '70's. He is a legend, one of the greatest actors ever. I love you Peter; always have. Bless you for portrayal(s); especially of LOA. Perfection.
A high I.Q. doesn't equate to exceptional knowledge of a particular subject... It would require one to be knowledgable on many and have a firm grasp of the principles of sociology even if by worldly experience alone. Which Bill has. But Bill has a very narrow view of subjects and the inability of grasping new concepts or even obvious ones relating to them that are outside those narrow views. Tread on his beliefs and belittling his "opponent"is his next and only defense. "Spin" their charectar...
@romber58 Multi- tasking, not using my sight on the keyboard (I'm not a typist and forget where things are) and not spell checking doesn't help. Proper English to extrapulate a complete idea in 500 chars. or less. Thank you for grasping I.Q. But I'm sorry if you didn't get what I was saying. "High IQ doesn't mean he isn't smart on facts." Better? Like "High IQ doesn't mean a good typist or keeping s#it breif." Maybe you couldn't comprehend my wordy point. I hope this fixes things for you.
@Ramubay Yes your so right but don't forget, underneath that"spaced out"persona is a very high IQ.They were all quite a handful actually,my dad and mum was Irish and my dad did love a drink, like most Irish, scotch and welsh men of his era.
@alameda1212 Hello, thank you for your most interesting comment!:o)
you know he really is my favourite actor, well one of many. His wife wrote a book about their marriage, wow I was disappointed in his behaviour!,still that's how he was I guess.I think he wrote a bio too and I think that he lives in Cricklewood London?.Well my friend says he lives near her and no I did not snoop Lol.
@rockcityaudio Yes, Peter was born Aug of '31. He has aged quite a bit since the early 70s due to the effects of drinking. He always had a very slight build, yet 6'3 in height, but drinking will take its toll on his face and skin in general. Same happened with his friends Richard Harris, Oliver Reed, and so on. One can imagine the effects on his liver, kidneys, and so on.
@alameda1212 Peter was born on August 2nd, 1933 in - well, there is some question re where - Connemara, County Galway, Ireland; or Leeds, England. His dad was from Ireland, we know that.
He was very ill in the mid '70's and it took quite some time for him to recover. But recover he did and noone in the world is like him. I love him always-his LOA is an iconic performance and noone but he could have done that difficult, demanding role. Iconic performance; iconic film forever.
I have no idea how a director or other actors could have worked with him, he's so spacey..and how he was able to give such great performances role after role. Bogles the mind.
i dont understand one thing..he was so healthy and one of the most handsome men ever breath..how come he turned so skinny and delicate in just 15 years that clothes dont fit on him properly???
@ali5992100 I always thought the drink was what did Best in, but when you're that drunk a toilet seat covered in coke might look remarkably like a powdered donut, or a salted margarita
this is a real gem. Johnny Carson has to be the only talk show host who talks more than his guests, yet still puts the focus on the guests life/stories, whatever
What an actor & what style - just his voice alone knocks off most of today's so called stars - seen a few O'toole interviews in recent years but would love to see more from around this time, Interesting that this was just a couple of years before the famously panned Macbeth at the Old Vic - but turned out to be one of the most sold out productions of all time - the guy's a true star!
He's a great actor ... acting ... very, very ... uncomfortable. Good actors can personafy just about anything, animal, mineral and vegitable .. so what is he doing here? Pain pills? Method Acting for .. what?
Thanks a lot. Questions: a) where can I see the full interview?, b) do you have footage of the other O'Toole interviews with Johnny, such as the one from 1963?

Wow! so great to see this moment. I thought it was lost forever.
Now, if only someone could find his epic appearances on the tonight show from the 1960s! Peter was in his dashing, liquid prime in those days.

This is more a ticked off Carson chastising O'Toole like a naughty schoolboy than O'Toole explaining his erratic behaviour
