The soundtrack to countless roadtrips and vacations.... I'm always reminded of the year we leased a Cessna and flew it over the US Desert Southwest. What a landscape.. This song fills me with gratitude for my health, my freedom, and my priviledge to live in a prosperous country.
One of my top 5 fave songs of all time for sure . . . sends me back to my care free high school days (which I didn't realize were that care free at the time!) and also takes me back to the summer of 1996 :-)
This was the first song on the radio that I remeber hearing. I was 10 years old. I fell in love and continue to love the artistry, composition and soul that is part of each and every one of their songs.
I saw/Heard this song played at another Roadside attraction in Markham back in the mid/early ninties before this song had been released to CD. The sea of still people just erupted into a sincronized bounce @ 1:22 in the song. I'll never forget that. An awesome time!
@JamesCecilia I was at the same show, just in front of the sound board. Great day. Blues Traveler and Ziggy and others. I'm an American who was lucky enough to spend years in Buffalo (if you call that luck) and expereince great Canadian bands through CFNY (I hope that's the letters of the 101 station in TO; my memory is sketchy). Humble and Fred in the morning. Great DJ's throughout the day and great memories all around.
@pmac5000 They were happy idiots! Great DJ's and a great station. I love the mandate that Canadian stations have to play 20% home bands (I've been told that, don't know for sure). It helps good bands get exposure instead of American and British bands getting all the airplay.
@nobodyhome8 For pop formats, it's 35% Canadian content mandatory. And it's nice to hear someone appreciates local music besides me. Most of my friends like to rag on Canadian artists, but I love listening to homegrown talent. Cheers, bud!
Trouble at the hen house was the first album by TTH I ever owned. I worked my ass off mowing lawns to buy it. It took forever to find it because in upstate NY towns are so far from each other and I had to search five towns until I found a record store that sold this CD! I used to listen to them and other awesome Canadian bands on 106.9 FM (THE BEAR) out of Ottawa. I've turned all my friends on to Canadian music since I moved back to MI a decade ago. I LOVE CANADIAN MUSIC!
yep, it can't get much better than this. TTH, the Rheostatics and King Cobb Steelie led the way for me during my uni years. This song was one of the very best.
@jasong4111 I know what your saying but. Have you heard The Weber Brothers yet? They are a mix band American guys and Peterborough On Canadian guys. They are the shit as well.Under the Radar too.
photographic geek-dork alert!: LOVE the cinematography, but they shouldn't have used the dark red filter for the scene with the mountie in it.. red filter makes the sky look awesome, but it also makes the mountie look like he's wearing white uniform. lol
Awesome song and all that, yeah, yeah, yeah... but for me, it's STUNNING cinematography that makes this video so special. It's like Ansel Adams shot it. Just riveting!
great song. great band. not just a great canadian band, but a great band in general. i know you guys have a ton of pride but sometimes you sell yourselves short by branding "canada" on everything decent that comes from up there. ok, we get it, they're from canada. geez.
I agree with the theory of Earth looks like a gift shop from space. And if you think about it, the Earth is really fragile, like all the gifts you could buy at a gift shop.
To me its about feeling small in an incomprehensibly massive world. I think the high up above lyric refers to what the astronauts said when they saw the earth from space. Something so huge seemed like a gift shop to them from that perspective, or maybe I'm just reading too much into Gords lyrics...
umm...this song is THE answer to the eternally asked question:
What does it mean to be Canadian?
the rest of the world really really really should take a close look at us, just as we have taken a close look at the rest of the world ( hello, America! )
I Spent a bit of time in Halifax..( a few times)...Ex -Patriot in the Making...These people were so cool,The Hip are in a class by themselves, The way the guitars blend (Rob Baker is the Shit)and bounce off each other - Lifetime Fan...
really? take a look at the video. pretty sure almost all of the footage, besides niagara falls, is in america. grand canyon, statue of liberty, even a shot of the twin towers. stop letting your own insecurity speak for a great band and a great song idiot.
what, exactly, do you find so offensive that you must label me an "idiot"?
if you must know, I stole "Hello America"
from the title of J.G. Ballard's book, which i recently re-read
i'm not going to scroll back to read my comment, but i'm sure you are reading too much into what is a standard-pithy observation about Can-Am relations
actually, i really have no interest in what you read or how many times you've read it. just pointing out what seemed to be a pompous comment based on your personal opinion. from that, you take someone else's music and lyrics and claim that they're making the same statement.you remind me of that pony tailed guy in the bar in good will hunting. you respond by running back and bragging about a book you've read.well guess what? i got her numba! howdya like them apples!
Hip, you guys are just awesome. I love listening to your music and lyrics and they always get my juices flowing. Your live shows are exactly what live shows are supposed to be, you guys trying to please the crowds that are there to watch you and support you. I wish all bands played your live shows like you guys...then nobody would have to worry about record sales because everyone would go to concerts. You guys are the best, keep it up! Love your music.
Fuck Yeah I've been to Rawhide !!!! the Hip rules.
