Lake Erie Yellow Perch gill nets out of ,Port Stanley

I love to eat perch. I will not buy any if they are harvested in that manner. It's unfair that a few individuals get that many perch. What if I brought my boat in with that many? I'd be in handcuffs. Recreational fishing generates much more money in the economy than commercial fishing but they always get preferential treatment. In Jersey the size limit for summer flounder is 18". For netters it's 14". You can fish all day and catch 50 fish 16 and 17" and maybe a couple keepers. Just not right.

Ok I have a question to all of those hating this video, when you go to the grocery store and see WILD Lake Erie Perch for sale where do you think they get it from? Do you really think that a few people with fishing rods catch all that fish? To supply a grocery store with Perch caught on rod and reel is next to impossible. And nets are nothing new, they were one of the first fishing techniques. Thats all, hate me if you want.

Been in the fishing industry all my life. Dad was a commercial fisherman, and me and my mom worked in the fish plants filleting fish. I still fillet fish, and have a college education. Love to do it, hard work, but love it. The perch are thick out there, not just commercially, but for the anglers too. You just have to know where to find them.  Caught my 50 limit in 1.5 hours last summer, was in having a beer and cleaning them by noon. The ministry protects the perch, can't fish em til may.

My father was a commercial fisherman for many years. The 70's and 80's I remember going out with him on the his tug he owned in Port Stanley. Good times, and great fishing. I also love to fish for perch in Lake Erie, and I know many fishermen. They work hard, and deserve every dollar they make. Because the Ministry doesn't allow them to fish for perch before they spawn in May, there are alot of perch in Lake Erie. Be more concerened about the enviroment. Ocean liners dumping thier ballast

I recreational fish and we hammer the perch but you guys just destroy them with those gill nets, so funny. All you guys bitchin about it do you have any knowledge about fisheries perch reproduce so fast and in some places are considered nusince fish. Fish stocks are calculated every year in Lake Erie by Ontario, New York State,Pennsylvainia,Ohio and Michigan .Then quotas are set for anglers in all states and Canada.Then our quotas are set. We are boarded every day when we return to harbor ,by Game Wardens ,who calculate catch in pounds and subtract it from allowed perch for the year.. Lake Erie is alive and well.

Leaving to much small fish n a huge lake or res always causes problems fish are to be eaten.As long as the rules are followed selective harvest is better then throwing back everything. Balance is key if you dont harvest some litle guys theres no room for bigguns. How do you guys remove them from the nets? We remove them with what we call a Pickhook basically you go up one side and down the other and the fish comes out. It's fast work too and some fishermen on the Great Lakes are known for their speed! My dad fished for 14 years on the lakes and builds boats now for Kanter Yachts and I've been fishing about 4 years now on and off and love it. I know the Carol Ann II very well I see her all the time! Take care!
