This was great listening to this again. I was mad when , in April 1971, Dark Shadows was finished and ABC put the new Password in its place. No more vampires, werewolves, and horror. It was good to hear theme again, though.
Depends on your age. I would argue that the jazzy number from the mid 60s is the REAL Password theme. That's the one I heard coming home from school (and still hum to this day when we change places in a car - like the contestants crossing over!)
Unfortunately, Game Show Network doesn't have any of the 1970s PASSWORD or Password All Stars episodes from the ABC run. (Well, actually they have ONE with Betty White -- which was the only episode supposedly not deleted out of 1099 tapes).
They still also show "Password Plus" every morning though.
They do have 1 with Jack Klugman and Brett Somers as the guests, they've aired it at least twice, once just on a kinda random moment, the other as part of a tribute to Brett Somers.
At least 5 episodes exist: a December 1971 ep. (which GSN has), a general '72 ep., the all stars finale, a general revamped-format ep., and the finale.
Actually, there are at least 8 episodes that exist: the five you mentioned, the Friday show from the premiere week, and 3 other general episodes. The only episodes in the trading circuit are the Dec. '71 episode, the all-star finale, the general 1975 episode, and the finale.
Yeah, the episodes not in the trading circuit can only be viewed at the UCLA. I would've loved if one of the episodes from the week Betty White hosted existed, but we can't get everything we want. I wish the networks didn't wipe the tapes. At the time, they thought they were doing the right thing, but now, it's left a gigantic scar on the game show world. Thank god CBS didn't wipe game shows.
The original Password'll be back in GSN's lineup starting Monday at 3:30am. It's probably gonna be the CBS version, but eventually they may air one of these.
I LOVE this theme too - I can remember as a kid, when I stayed home because I was sick (not of school) I was watching TV and among the soap operas and all the other game shows that was on, THIS IS THE ONE I remember the most - (back then, there were only THREE NETWORKS to watch!!!)
Oh, this sounds SO, So good. I faintly remember this version (The ORIGINAL Password!) . I was 4 at the time (I'm 38), and used to get this mixed up with Password All-Stars. I remember BOTH of the bonus round clocks (radial and digital), and how they used to shou up over the contestant's heads...
When this version was on, I visited some relatives in L.A. -- they asked me what I wanted to do while I was there. The one thing I wanted was to go see a taping of "Password". And it took me awhile, but I was finally able to whistle this theme. Thanks for loading it. Now, if someone could find video of the 1980's version of "To Tell The Truth" with THAT theme...
Take the Family Game by Bob Barker: someone posted the episode on youtube with OC, and it dosnt have the kinescope look, so it looks like an early U-Matic by Sony recorded it.
That's not strictly true. You could get VTR's -- they recorded on reels of tape as opposed to cassettes -- before 1975. You are correct that the first VCR specifically for home use wasn't introduced until 1975. So, my error. I should have said "VTRs were still ..."
Now, if only we could get our hands on one of the rarest themes of all time; the closing theme of the 1972 syndie revival of I've Got a Secret. It must be a SCORE production, because it sounds exactly like something you'd hear in the first suite of Showcase cues for the revival of The Price Is Right, which came out at about the same time.
Neither closing or opening of syndie IGAS is by score productions. The opening was by Steve Allen, the opening, as said by score productions in their response, is " The closing theme of the syndicated 1972 I've Got A Secret was made by an unknown artist" :/
@builttrainer That particular theme is available on the Television Production Music Museum site but you have to become an actual member to gain access to the actual theme used on the show, including the true opening.
That theme sounds quite good. It's gives a simple academic style word game a little more hipness to it but doesn't go over the top with extreme rock or disco that was dominating the decade of the 1970's. Being on ABC also helped it fit in to; with a "beaty" theme and trademark orange sets. It was also about time to move Password to the seventies with a theme like this. It's good theme; fits in with a format and set like that. I give it 5 stars since it fits the qualifications.
Welcome, to the YI ZONE.

Hey, I have a question: from what I'm seeing, this song is actually titled "The Fun Of It." Is that true?

I have this theme on CD but it lacks the percussive parts, and the synth sounds a little different.

I wonder why this music was slowed down for the actual opening on the show...

Did you record any of these shows? Or were VCRs still costly?

I'm afraid not. VCRs were still PROHIBITIVELY expensive then. btw -- the TTTT theme is on this site.

VCRs weren't even on the market until 1975.

There were some primitive video cassette recorders by Sony as early as 1967.
