pele and maradona were greats in their era, there were also amazing players during and after such as ribelinho, beckenbauer, cruyff, van basten, ronaldinho, ronaldo, zidane, george best, c. ronaldo, to name a few. Also, the only player who didn't have a great team behind him was Maradona, Pele, Cruyff, Zidane had great teams in both their clubs and countries. Messi has no midfield with Argentina. Perhaps on that basis Maradona is the best in history, but he was never nearly as effective as Messi is scoring.

KaKa why? because he won the champions league that year. who won the best in the world in 2008? C. Ronaldo why? because he won the champions league that year. who won the best in the world in 2009? All im saying is that being the best has to be accompanied by tittles, and it would be extremely hard to be the best in history without a world cup. I agree with you. but it is very hard for the duth right now... look at Snejder, he got kicked out of the best player, and i think he did more than messi himself. Snejder own the champions league, and went to the world cup final....

@dougal505 very true, there are players that ave won uch that are truly the best, like giggs, like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but reality is that fifa awards player that win titles only. It is sad, but thats the way it is, you provide the best example with giggs, very good, but doesnt win much with engalnd, so FIFA wont recognize him, and Sneijder is very good, but look at what Xavi and Iniesta won, THE WORLD CUP, FIFA will give it to one of them. you will see in a week.

I know exactly what you mean, but think about it. Messi played very well in the world cup, but not the way he does in Barcelona. And do you know how many playes in history have been just like messi but nobody remembers them? thats because they never won anything, because their team wasnt very good. so Messi wont be recognized as being the best if he doesnt win a World Cup , Pele, MAradona, Ronaldo (brazilian) Zidane... what makes them be the best of all time (for now)? @chimbolax i disagree,george best is considered one of the best players of all time,and i dont even think he played in the world cup..the quality of the players around you,should never determine either how good,or bad you are,some of messis best goals were in an argentina shirt...also,ronaldo (brasil) was only a great player for around 5 years,so you cant say he kept his form,maradonna was a flop when he played for barcelona,thats the so called greats,messi is 22,and his peak is ahead of him.

@golaharsh we need more people that think the way you do, specially working for FIFA, everything you said is 100% correct and fair, but FIFA doesnt thinkthe same way. They understand that talent, dedication and titles go together. I believe Messi is something special that will always be remembered. We must enjoy Messi as my father also got to see Pele and Maradona, and Messi is the best right now, but he has to prove he can play the same without the best midfielders in the world (xavi, Iniesta) other than that, the boy is a wonder. and Ronnie didnt win the champions league, but look at the leagues that he won, and the international tournaments he won, and the 3 world player of the year awards, (1st one when he was between 17 and 19 years old)

@chimbolax please try to remember that ronaldo done it in the world cup at a young age but maradona and zidane did"nt do it til they were 26 and are regarded as good if not better than ronaldo, and the anwer to how many goals can messi get without iniesta and xavi, he scored 47 last season and only 5 of those goals were assists between them, where were they for the other 42, please do some research before you make idiotic comments.

@chimbolax I would agree with most points, but I would also argue that neither Maradona nor Pele won a Champions League, which today has a far superior level than a world cup, last 3 were rubbish. Also, the only player who didn't have a great team behind him was Maradona, Pele, Cruyff, Zidane had great teams in both their clubs and countries. Messi has no midfield with Argentina. Perhaps on that basis Maradona is the best in history, but he was never nearly as effective as Messi is scoring.
