My 5.9 in my Jeep is one of those engines that require 91 or higher. Have you figured out what the pinging/ticking is caused by ??
Mine does the same damn thing "somtimes" at 2500-3000rpm.. I use 93 octane too.. and my plenum pan is clean as a whistle... so i cant figure this out..
@1ownjoo2 Don't hold me to it, but I believe the engine timing was either advanced or retarded a couple degrees to eek out that ever so slight performance advantage. Easy for Dodge, as the parts are the same, and all they did was use a different octane fuel to get that 5-10 hp extra, and more torque! The problem is that the computer is calibrated to this ignition timing, so to change the timing you'd have to reprogram the computer although I doubt performance would suffer much...
Not enough room to type all this out but basicly, it started this pinging 3 months ago (bought it 14 months ago) i only do city driving 5-15 miles or so every 2-3 days. Sometimes a little more every now and then, on top fo that i used cheap 93 octane gas from sheetz (there gas sucks). My intake manifold plenum is almost so clean you can eat off it.. pressure tests show my gasket is still good. I have very little blowby, compression is 160psi on all 8. Spark plugs are super clean
When i looked into the cylinders tho the pistons were all black, bumpy grimey. I do loose about 1/4 1/2 half quart of oil every 3k miles and im not sure where its going i suspect if the plenum really is good its from the PCV valve (it is new tho) cause the pressure test shows the rings are good. I used seafoam on the engine, LOTS of smoke, pistons were semi clean from that, so i decided to to use the rest today, havent checked the pistons again.
Only add ons i have currently is a Spectra cone filter, and K&N FIPK hat i got from a JY for $20. I made a ram air scoop from the grill . I tried re-routing the spark plug wires from the chyrlser TSB said.. That actually fixed my transmission shudder from 3-OD so it was probably not the tranny and actually a missfire or something..
I dunno man the pinging seems to be getting worse progressivly.. Im afraid ill hurt my engine if this keeps up.
The timing advance on the Jeep engine is agressive, its about 15 degree advanced from the stock 5.9 on the dodge trucks. Even more if you have the mopar performance PCM, which i dont have.
I dunno im hoping this issue is a carbon issue, cause these engines HATE carbon buildup.. Either that or its the CAI doing it, cause it never did it until shortly after i put it on i believe. Im going to dump some techron in the fuel for awhile and see if it helps if its carbon
@1ownjoo2 I go through oil and have similar engine characteristics...comp. good, spark good, etc. I have K&N FIPK with currently an Amsoil cone filter installed for the winter as the oil filter grabs the salt dust in the air. Anyway, The Jeep 5.9 LTD and Durango R/T (2000 only), share the same PCM and engine tune. I only get 5hp more out of it with the Durango variant so perhaps our engines are timed differently. I use Amsoil power foam, shoot it straight into the intake and smokesalot
@1ownjoo2 #2 I've had great luck with the basic NGK V Power plugs and change them every 30K miles. I bought an SCT tuner (custom) a few years ago and it's paid for itself five fold. I save $500+ a year not getting premium fuel (0.21/L more for 94 octane here over 87 octane! or nearly $0.90/US gal more). Even when towing I don't get engine knock on the SCT 87 octane tune although performance suffers. Running 94 on the 93 tune still pings under heavy throttle and i have yet to find a
I think the problem could be carbon, as you stated on my vid driving 1100rpm.. I think doing that all the time in the city for awhile builds up major carbon hense my black pistons.. Using seafoam once smoked like crazy some of it was blue smoke too. The 2nd treatment today caused it to smoke not as bad.. but it pinged like a mofo.. I took it for a drive in 2nd at 65mph for like 20m (4k rpm) to burn/blow all the crap out. I think it worked doesnt ping anymore
@Whitecrackertrash Durango? Yes. Superchips - No. I've been using a custom SCT Tuner for a couple years now with the BEST success out of all the tunes I've tried. 93 octane setting using 94 octane ;)
@snigga10 This was purposely done to keep rpm's high with keeping a lower speed so you can hear the engine knock.
I'm one of the rare Durango owners who uses it to go off-road, to tow a boat, a couple utility trailers and on more occasions than I had ever thought, to carry 6 passengers plus myself. When you tow, Dodge recommends keeping Overdrive off to aid in transmission cooling, better engine braking and overall better drive ability. Under 40mph OD should be off to reduce gear hunting.
Hey, I have a 2000 5.9, what is the difference between the SLT and RT 5.9? I've been wanting to swap in a 6.1 just for fun. The 5.9 is fine as is. I have considered just the chip to see / feel the diferrence.
@Phantasmos The R/T comes with the shorter tires (30"), a few badges, two tone seats with suede door inserts and for 2000 model year only, a performance PCM that adds 5hp and 15lb ft of torque.
If you decide on a chip, and your D requires 91 octane, get SCT for the best bang for the buck. I tried Superchips and Hypertech and on any fuel setting even with me running 93 octane the engine knock was very bad in the upper rpm range.
UPDATE: SCT tuners came to the rescue! I sold the Superchips 3715, and picked up a custom SCT tuner. I had the 93 program installed and ran 94 octane, but it still pinged slightly. I installed the 91 octane tune and its close to PERFECT on, yes 91 octane fuel which means I can fill up nearly anywhere! Sweet!
@androsborsato Yes, I had it installed with an aftermarket warranty that paid for the labour on May 24th 2007. Mileage was 127,887kms or roughly 79,418miles. I keep thorough maintenance records!
It wasn't too bad with the oil consumption really, but the aftermarket 3 year warranty that I got with the vehicle included with the price at auction, was about to expire in June, thus is why I saved myself the $400 in labour. Well worth it so far, I have no complaints.
@androsborsato Well, mine does. It has the same PCM as the '1998 Jeep GC LTD with the 5.9L. I wouldn't mind finding a 01-03 R/T that can run on 87 octane and take it for a test drive. I'm sure a tuner would work better performance wise if I were to upgrade to a 91 octane program. Still, I've had my SCT for a year and I can't complain. Sales tax jumps 8% here in Ontario come July 1st, so I imagine I might try a lower octane....not that I'm cheap or anything! ha
I thought about that myself! But, it's not suitable for towing as I'd make sure to tune it to the max! My 360 still runs like a top, so I don't have any current need to rip the engine apart...though I'd love to!
mine does the same thing but maybe uder a little more of a load like around 4 grand or better and i use 93 most of the time is there anything that will stop that tick
If I use 91 octane with a booster ($12/ea every fill-up for 90L or 23gal), or 94 octane fuel from Sunoco, I have no pinging right on up to 5400rpm. I generally operate in the 1300-2000rpm range, but when I tow the trailer(s), I'll easily keep the engine in the 2500-3500rpm range, and to put the hammer down to climb steep hills so as not to loose much speed, the pinging can be unbearable, but so far running 94 Sunoco fuel, it's been running with no pinging at all at any rpm.
Well, this depends on what you think is expensive. For under $2K, you can get a programmer, 52mm throttle body, cold air intake, and headers. The stock exhaust is rather efficient, even more so on the R/T models. With a cat back you should be able to get all the above mods for under $2200. It seems steep, but you'll definitely notice a gain in performance! Best part is, is if you want more, you can install some 1.7 roller rockers. It's a bit involved, but will add around 10hp.
Do you like your Durango ? And what kind of gas milage do you get because i'm bout to be 16 here in a few months and I'm thinkin seriously about getting one of theses..
SLT, 87 octane fuel is fine. I prefer Shell gas when I can get it. As for oil, if you drive at least 15K a year, I'd use synthetics. Depending on the oil brand, you can do one oil change a year. I've been running Amsoil for years. Two months ago I changed the oil to their new 0W30, for the better winter performance (when winter gets here at least). Oil consumption is next to nil, and I've driven 3K on it already!
U hear a tick in ur engine Compartment when taking off quick?? What oil do u use?? If ur running 10 W30 and ur over 90k mile u need to use 10 W40.. Ticking will be vanish... Or think about rebuilding that motor before u throw a rod!!!
Oil is a minor variable. Varnish is not of concern. I get periodic oil analysis done as I run extended drain Amsoil. Have for over the last 60K and I have now 105K on the engine. Runs great, but the PCM is tuned from the factory at 91 octane, even with superchips tuner set on 87, the PCM still wants 91 octane fuel or it will ping under high load conditions.
It's full time AWD. The transfer case has a center differential built in that allows the axles to move freely without binding. The torque split is approx 40% front and 60% rear power output for the '2wd' feel during regular driving.
Driving with the axles LOCKED in either 4HI or 4LO will damage the drivetrain (bind the axles together and you can break differentials/pinions/gears etc.), it's only to be used on rough roads (not pavement), such as sand, gravel, or during the winter in moderatesnow
No. I tried running 94octane from Sunoco and found that my mileage decreases 1-2mpg in combined city/highway driving. The engine runs smoother but after my recent emissions test it blows 80ppm of unburned fuel out the pipe. I retested after running a few tanks of 91 and it only blew out 15ppm. The limit to pass the emissions test here is 150ppm or lower. Oddly enough, I pulled out a previous e-test and found I ran regular for it (87 octane) and only showed 7ppm! Too bad 87 makes'r ping.
gotta love the metric system. I used to get comments all the time when I had photos of posted speeds as a lot of folks thought it was 180mph...which isn't feasible in an AWD Durango anyway with basic mods. They didn't bother to look at the km/h on the speedo.
i dont get it the oil gauge in our 5.9 durango doesnt fluctuate (??spell??) but ive also noticed that the 360 seems to be in love with 3,000rpm which explains why it has an average fuel econ of 13mpg lol and i only put ams oil in it plus ams filter.
If your foot's constantly on the go pedal you won't see it fluctuate much. If your stopped long enough, the going consensus is that it will drop as there is no load on the engine. I wouldn't worry about it if it doesn't - as long as the pressure remains in operating range.
Just to let you know you might have Oil sludge in your engine this is why I can see in the video that your oil pressure keep moving it doesnt stay still especially when you come to a complenty stop. I telling you this because the same thing happen to me I got a 5.9 2000 Durango I brought a new engine last month because of this problem. You should take it to repair shop before is to late to see what is wrong with your oil pressure gauge!!! but Durango are great cars dong get me wrong!!!
sorry, no sludge in this engine. I replaced the valve cover gaskets and oil pan gasket last spring. The oil pressure changes as there is no load going to the engine. Same goes for gas & diesel engines. The more load you put on the engine the more the pressure will increase in order to keep the engine sufficiently lubricated as the oil also dissipates heat from the added engine load at speed. New vehicles no longer have that mechanical guage as people think they have a problem with the engine
Oil pumps good too. Had it replaced as I came across a new one for free so I couldn't pass it up. Oil pumps in these engines are mechanical so they follow the speed of the engine. The faster the engine revs, the more the pressure increases to lubricate the components. Most modern vehicles built in the last few years have no oil pressure guage since too many people got concerned about having engine problems when it's normal operation. Pressure will remain high until the engine is up to oper. temp
Thank you for the information . So what you are saying is the faster you go the more oli pressure you engine will get, and the slow you go your engine loss oli pressure. So that is normal for this kind of cars!!!
if there is only one 360 mag. then why are there three different vin engine codes for the 360 in the durango ? you might want to keep looking my 360 h.o. was in my 98 sst and it didn't matter what i ran in it because of the computer the 360 has 9 different head variations and over a dozen cams so i would bet that they came in more then one form again try again when you have something to post and just your reference to chevy tells me you know very little!
I'm a little confused what is the point in this video? To show that it takes you the entire length of the highway on ramp to get up to 62 miles per hour while standing on it with a superchips tuner?? I have a 1994 jeep grand cherokee with a stock 318 in it and i can bary the speedo in it before making it to the end of the on ramp...
Huh? Read the title. For those that have knowledge with Dodge products you'd know that the '00 R/T came from the factory requiring 91 octane, so I tested the 87 superchips tune to see how the engine would ping under load with lower octane fuel as the tuner isn't meant to get rid of engine knock, but I figured I'd try anyway. If I was after max acceleration I would've titled the video '0-120mph'. Granted, the first minute or so of this video is a waste of time.
my brother posted the comment before reading the video but on the topic of knowing dodge any body that knows dodge knows better than to buy an rt with a 360 h.o. because they are junk thats why dodge put three different 360s in them 360 l.d. for yuppies and soccer moms 360 h.o. in the rts for kids and middle aged men tryin to get some and 360 h.d. for adults who actually know dodges and know what they are ordering post something when you actually have something to post !
The 360 Magnum LA engine came in one form only. There aren't any special engine characteristics that distinguish it except for computer management. I ran 91 octane in my old S'Charged C1500 and it served me well, so I kept the 91 octane tradition going. LA's from the earlier 90's didn't have the Magnum heads. The LA Magnum 360 can handle upwards of 500hp & 450tq without any internal modifications. The 360 was also the base engine in previous 2500 & 3500 trucks, again with no modifications.
If you continue do accerlated fast at the stop light your car will break down faster. You are supposed to Pick up some speed at the light by pushing a little on the gas pedal.
All vehicles will break down, it's inevitable. I do 98% of my own work anyway so all it costs me is parts and time away from the wife! If I wanted to really break it fast I'd put the transmission in neutral, bring up the RPM's to 2500 or so and throw the vehicle into drive and mash the throttle. Just so you know that's how you get the BEST acceleration times, not flooring the throttle from a stop in gear. Flooring it from a stop mostly stresses the U joints and transmission shafts. Nothingtoobad
As I mentioned above - its inevitable. I'll break it down for you. This means that problems will occur no matter how you drive any vehicle. I owned an '85 K car with the 2.2L when I lived in Calgary AB and it served its purpose with tons of high RPM mountain driving, just as my truck will serve me at pulling trailers. As I mentioned that I also do my own maintenance, breaking things doesn't concern me. Oh, and stopping doesn't damage anything but the brakes, unless you drive into something.
Mine wasn't a wagon, just the basic sedan with roll up windows (the good old days!). It was a great runner. I traded it years ago on a Dodge Spirit. Shortly after I moved to Ontario from Alberta the engine block cracked. It only had 167,000kms on it...but again it was from a lot of mountain driving (3500rpms for prolonged periods). My dad bought it originally but never drove it much so I took it off his hands. The 2.2 never consumed any oil and I ran full synthetic in it after the firstoilchange
Chrysler messed up when they designed the latest gen Sebring/Avenger. It should have been a lot better. The K car was a good piece at the time. if they brought any car back it should the the Acclaim/Spirit line with the 2.5L. I preferred that engine over the 2.2 for the added torque, as it got identical fuel economy numbers. The Durango will stay if the Hybrid models sell but as it stands now the truck market is down 10% so far this year. In a way it's a good thing as I don't like the newer D's.
Explorers are good vehicles. Friend of mine had a '94 with the 5 speed and V6. It was a good runner but didn't get much better mileage than my 360 Durango. He traded it in for a 04 last year with the 210hp V6 and gets around 18mpg average, four better than his old one!
The old explorer are better Ford Explorer from 1995- 2001 they are junk especially the one with the v6 engine. But for some reason the Explorer with a v8 engine they dont break down alot as a v6 engine Explorer.
The DOHC V6 is a lot better to have than the OHV unit in older models. It's much more efficient. Yes, nothing beats the 5.0 V8 as it could be easily upgraded to handle a bit extra HP without affecting transmission durability. They're hard to find as not many were produced. Before the V8 was discontinued it only made 20-25hp more than the V6 did and the V6 got 2-3mpg better mileage. The new 292hp 4.6L 6speed auto is a nice combo, but not worth the money
i have a dead stock 2000 dodge durango with third row seating, 4.7L magnum V8 and i can do dead burn outs from a stoplight blowing white smoke and all. i can imagine if i chiped it and put a flowmaster 40 / forced cold air intake. i mean hell if i can do a stright burn with all stock. lol must be fun to have money to do all thos upgrades
Once I can manage the garage space accordingly I want to get a rear wheel drive durango and sink money into that one. My R/T is an everyday driver and I don't plan to do anything more except upgrade the exhaust once this one gets enough holes in it.
V6 won't tow my trailers. I get 18mpg on the highway when I'm not towing. I have modifications to the drivetrain which hurts the OE transmission as it has to put up with an additional 34lb ft over it's rated capacity of 350lb ft. of torque. I have a NV4500 waiting to get swapped in. Need a 5 speed.
Anyway, I programmed in the 91 performance tune, and there is NO pinging under heavy load. Just goes to show that the '87' tune doesn't work for everyone. Oh well.
You got several problem with this car 1. The Tranmission seem like is not working that good. 2. You got a engine noise . I think you should buy a Ford Explorer v6 gas saver..
No, that's my O/D light off. I keep it off when I drive around town and especially in traffic as it saves extra shifting on the transmission. Besides, locking out 4th gear gives me better engine braking and better overall performance. Above 40mph (60km/h) I turn O/D back on.
Damn yours does ping alot. I have a 2000 durango r/t also. I usually put premium in mine or mid-grade. I would never run reg gas in my truck. Pinging is really bad for your engine.
Yeah i have a 2000. Now i believe there was a recall on mine before i owned it. Cause in the engine bay there is a sticker that the computer was re-programmed from a dealer.
What you speak of is known as the 'death flash'. Where some people were complaining of the engines lacking power etc, so the dealers reflashed the computer - which lowered performance even more leading up to the recall. I could do a PCM swap but the cost doesn't justify it as I want to install a manual transmission once this autobox of mine goes and then I'd have to reprogram the computer again anyway!
Mine doesn't have the 'death flash' as the 2000 R/T's have a different PCM from stock 5.9/5.2L that are capable of running on regular fuel. Otherwise mine runs great. Next on my list is to install some 1.7 roller rockers...once the weather gets better of course!
Also, the PCM update was up to the owner to get it done. If they complained about excessive pinging running the required octane, the dealer would change the software which meant a loss in power but at least the engine wouldn't ping. From what I've heard from people on forums mileage even stayed the same but it wasn't much fun to drive. One guy described it as turning a 250hp 5.9L feeling like it was a 175hp 5.0L GM V8 which isn't overly weak, but lacks power to move the 4700lb+ vehicle.
you know what sucks? our 99 durango SLT had no-recals but the tranny went at low miles, as did the joints and bearings, oh and now the control arm is bad too, and this was mainly what they re-called but NO not on our dodge, dammit chrysler!
I have also added modifications such as 52mm TB, taylor wires, superchips (running 91 octane as of today!), K&N FIPK and MSD 6A. It's hard to find a tuner with an AWD dyno in my area, closest one is nearly three hours drive away (that I trust).
I miss the burnouts as well, but here I get 7-8 months of winter weather and the AWD with full time lock can't be beat. I've only ever used 4LO twice while on trails...I just don't have the right tires or clearance for real offroading.
Which add-a-leaf brand did you go with? I'm after some just to level out the rear end when towing. I'm debating if I should spend the extra cash on RSX9000 Rancho adjustable shocks or not too...hmmm decisions
Bilstein's are good! I ran them on other vehicles but I'm really after the adjustable shocks as I have three different trailers with varying tongue weights. The add a leafs will help as well but trying to find them locally is very hard. I'll have to give ebay a try and see what they have.
I got away with running 89 as long as I didn't tow the trailer or put the pedal to the floor...with the trailer I have to use 91...and now with the programmer it requires it anyway.
My 5.9 in my Jeep is one of those engines that require 91 or higher. Have you figured out what the pinging/ticking is caused by ??

It wasn't too bad with the oil consumption really, but the aftermarket 3 year warranty that I got with the vehicle included with the price at auction, was about to expire in June, thus is why I saved myself the $400 in labour. Well worth it so far, I have no complaints.
RT360ci 1 year ago
@RT360ci so it really just begs for the high octane eh?
androsborsato 1 year ago
@androsborsato Well, mine does. It has the same PCM as the '1998 Jeep GC LTD with the 5.9L. I wouldn't mind finding a 01-03 R/T that can run on 87 octane and take it for a test drive. I'm sure a tuner would work better performance wise if I were to upgrade to a 91 octane program. Still, I've had my SCT for a year and I can't complain. Sales tax jumps 8% here in Ontario come July 1st, so I imagine I might try a lower octane....not that I'm cheap or anything! ha

kick ass durango i got a 98 5.2 im trying to get a 408 put in with a supercharger
DodgeDurango98 2 years ago
I thought about that myself! But, it's not suitable for towing as I'd make sure to tune it to the max! My 360 still runs like a top, so I don't have any current need to rip the engine apart...though I'd love to!
RT360ci 2 years ago
mine does the same thing but maybe uder a little more of a load like around 4 grand or better and i use 93 most of the time is there anything that will stop that tick
demchevyboyz 2 years ago
If I use 91 octane with a booster ($12/ea every fill-up for 90L or 23gal), or 94 octane fuel from Sunoco, I have no pinging right on up to 5400rpm. I generally operate in the 1300-2000rpm range, but when I tow the trailer(s), I'll easily keep the engine in the 2500-3500rpm range, and to put the hammer down to climb steep hills so as not to loose much speed, the pinging can be unbearable, but so far running 94 Sunoco fuel, it's been running with no pinging at all at any rpm.
RT360ci 2 years ago
Well, this depends on what you think is expensive. For under $2K, you can get a programmer, 52mm throttle body, cold air intake, and headers. The stock exhaust is rather efficient, even more so on the R/T models. With a cat back you should be able to get all the above mods for under $2200. It seems steep, but you'll definitely notice a gain in performance! Best part is, is if you want more, you can install some 1.7 roller rockers. It's a bit involved, but will add around 10hp.
RT360ci 2 years ago
what are some of the less expensive modes that can be done to the 360 5.9, and notice some difference of the line?

Do you like your Durango ? And what kind of gas milage do you get because i'm bout to be 16 here in a few months and I'm thinkin seriously about getting one of theses..
ctb787 1 year ago
just picked up a 2000 slt with the 5.9 360,loving it.what do you rec for fuel and oil? thanks.
provenworldwide 2 years ago
SLT, 87 octane fuel is fine. I prefer Shell gas when I can get it. As for oil, if you drive at least 15K a year, I'd use synthetics. Depending on the oil brand, you can do one oil change a year. I've been running Amsoil for years. Two months ago I changed the oil to their new 0W30, for the better winter performance (when winter gets here at least). Oil consumption is next to nil, and I've driven 3K on it already!
RT360ci 2 years ago
U hear a tick in ur engine Compartment when taking off quick?? What oil do u use?? If ur running 10 W30 and ur over 90k mile u need to use 10 W40.. Ticking will be vanish... Or think about rebuilding that motor before u throw a rod!!!
Rarekak 2 years ago
Oil is a minor variable. Varnish is not of concern. I get periodic oil analysis done as I run extended drain Amsoil. Have for over the last 60K and I have now 105K on the engine. Runs great, but the PCM is tuned from the factory at 91 octane, even with superchips tuner set on 87, the PCM still wants 91 octane fuel or it will ping under high load conditions.
RT360ci 2 years ago
Hey i got the same truck, just wondering if that chip was worth it. Looking at getting one for MPG and/or power, just curious what you think.
Thanks

You have it on 4 wheel drive low or high? Will that damage your tranny when you are driving on city?
michaelheiland123654 2 years ago
It's full time AWD. The transfer case has a center differential built in that allows the axles to move freely without binding. The torque split is approx 40% front and 60% rear power output for the '2wd' feel during regular driving.
Driving with the axles LOCKED in either 4HI or 4LO will damage the drivetrain (bind the axles together and you can break differentials/pinions/gears etc.), it's only to be used on rough roads (not pavement), such as sand, gravel, or during the winter in moderatesnow
RT360ci 2 years ago
you should buy 93 octane maybe the fuel might last longer? :P
isthoed 2 years ago

O and dodge fans that 200 u see isnt mph its kmh so thats about 120-130mph
Theautotech 3 years ago
gotta love the metric system. I used to get comments all the time when I had photos of posted speeds as a lot of folks thought it was 180mph...which isn't feasible in an AWD Durango anyway with basic mods. They didn't bother to look at the km/h on the speedo.
RT360ci 2 years ago
i dont get it the oil gauge in our 5.9 durango doesnt fluctuate (??spell??) but ive also noticed that the 360 seems to be in love with 3,000rpm which explains why it has an average fuel econ of 13mpg lol and i only put ams oil in it plus ams filter.
Theautotech 3 years ago
If your foot's constantly on the go pedal you won't see it fluctuate much. If your stopped long enough, the going consensus is that it will drop as there is no load on the engine. I wouldn't worry about it if it doesn't - as long as the pressure remains in operating range.
RT360ci 3 years ago
Just to let you know you might have Oil sludge in your engine this is why I can see in the video that your oil pressure keep moving it doesnt stay still especially when you come to a complenty stop. I telling you this because the same thing happen to me I got a 5.9 2000 Durango I brought a new engine last month because of this problem. You should take it to repair shop before is to late to see what is wrong with your oil pressure gauge!!! but Durango are great cars dong get me wrong!!!
DodgeAriez 3 years ago
sorry, no sludge in this engine.
RT360ci 3 years ago
Oil pumps good too. Had it replaced as I came across a new one for free so I couldn't pass it up. Oil pumps in these engines are mechanical so they follow the speed of the engine. The faster the engine revs, the more the pressure increases to lubricate the components. Most modern vehicles built in the last few years have no oil pressure guage since too many people got concerned about having engine problems when it's normal operation. Pressure will remain high until the engine is up to oper. temp
RT360ci 3 years ago
Thank you for the information . So what you are saying is the faster you go the more oli pressure you engine will get, and the slow you go your engine loss oli pressure. So that is normal for this kind of cars!!!
DodgeAriez 3 years ago
ook at my vid oil pressure does same thing not too worried bout it
Jeepnut666 3 years ago
if there is only one 360 mag. then why are there three different vin engine codes for the 360 in the durango ? you might want to keep looking my 360 h.o. was in my 98 sst and it didn't matter what i ran in it because of the computer the 360 has 9 different head variations and over a dozen cams so i would bet that they came in more then one form again try again when you have something to post and just your reference to chevy tells me you know very little!
tomwoots79 3 years ago
I'm a little confused what is the point in this video? To show that it takes you the entire length of the highway on ramp to get up to 62 miles per hour while standing on it with a superchips tuner?? I have a 1994 jeep grand cherokee with a stock 318 in it and i can bary the speedo in it before making it to the end of the on ramp...
tomwoots79 3 years ago
RT360ci 3 years ago
my brother posted the comment before reading the video but on the topic of knowing dodge any body that knows dodge knows better than to buy an rt with a 360 h.o. because they are junk thats why dodge put three different 360s in them 360 l.d. for yuppies and soccer moms 360 h.o. in the rts for kids and middle aged men tryin to get some and 360 h.d. for adults who actually know dodges and know what they are ordering post something when you actually have something to post !
tomwoots79 3 years ago
The 360 Magnum LA engine came in one form only. There aren't any special engine characteristics that distinguish it except for computer management. I ran 91 octane in my old S'Charged C1500 and it served me well, so I kept the 91 octane tradition going. LA's from the earlier 90's didn't have the Magnum heads. The LA Magnum 360 can handle upwards of 500hp & 450tq without any internal modifications. The 360 was also the base engine in previous 2500 & 3500 trucks, again with no modifications.
RT360ci 3 years ago
maybe when you save up your lunch money you can afford a car .
Jeepnut666 3 years ago
If you continue do accerlated fast at the stop light your car will break down faster. You are supposed to Pick up some speed at the light by pushing a little on the gas pedal.
DodgeAriez 3 years ago
All vehicles will break down, it's inevitable. I do 98% of my own work anyway so all it costs me is parts and time away from the wife! If I wanted to really break it fast I'd put the transmission in neutral, bring up the RPM's to 2500 or so and throw the vehicle into drive and mash the throttle. Just so you know that's how you get the BEST acceleration times, not flooring the throttle from a stop in gear. Flooring it from a stop mostly stresses the U joints and transmission shafts. Nothingtoobad
RT360ci 3 years ago
Okay let me get this straight By doning alot of stopping will not break the tranmission or acceleration fast at each stop light???
DodgeAriez 3 years ago
As I mentioned above - its inevitable. I'll break it down for you. This means that problems will occur no matter how you drive any vehicle. I owned an '85 K car with the 2.2L when I lived in Calgary AB and it served its purpose with tons of high RPM mountain driving, just as my truck will serve me at pulling trailers. As I mentioned that I also do my own maintenance, breaking things doesn't concern me. Oh, and stopping doesn't damage anything but the brakes, unless you drive into something.
RT360ci 3 years ago
Thank you for your information I love the Dodge Ariez K Wagon You still have your?
DodgeAriez 3 years ago
Mine wasn't a wagon, just the basic sedan with roll up windows (the good old days!). It was a great runner. I traded it years ago on a Dodge Spirit. Shortly after I moved to Ontario from Alberta the engine block cracked. It only had 167,000kms on it...but again it was from a lot of mountain driving (3500rpms for prolonged periods). My dad bought it originally but never drove it much so I took it off his hands. The 2.2 never consumed any oil and I ran full synthetic in it after the firstoilchange
RT360ci 3 years ago
I wish if they bring back the K cars. I heard that chrysler is thinking of not making nomore durango for 2010.
DodgeAriez 3 years ago
Chrysler messed up when they designed the latest gen Sebring/Avenger. It should have been a lot better. The K car was a good piece at the time. if they brought any car back it should the the Acclaim/Spirit line with the 2.5L. I preferred that engine over the 2.2 for the added torque, as it got identical fuel economy numbers. The Durango will stay if the Hybrid models sell but as it stands now the truck market is down 10% so far this year. In a way it's a good thing as I don't like the newer D's.
RT360ci 3 years ago
You got that right. I want a durango so bad I got right now a 1999 Ford Explorer v6 4.0 motor 4 door but the durango cost too much.
DodgeAriez 3 years ago
Explorers are good vehicles. Friend of mine had a '94 with the 5 speed and V6. It was a good runner but didn't get much better mileage than my 360 Durango. He traded it in for a 04 last year with the 210hp V6 and gets around 18mpg average, four better than his old one!
RT360ci 3 years ago
The old explorer are better Ford Explorer from 1995- 2001 they are junk especially the one with the v6 engine. But for some reason the Explorer with a v8 engine they dont break down alot as a v6 engine Explorer.
DodgeAriez 3 years ago
The DOHC V6 is a lot better to have than the OHV unit in older models. It's much more efficient. Yes, nothing beats the 5.0 V8 as it could be easily upgraded to handle a bit extra HP without affecting transmission durability. They're hard to find as not many were produced. Before the V8 was discontinued it only made 20-25hp more than the V6 did and the V6 got 2-3mpg better mileage. The new 292hp 4.6L 6speed auto is a nice combo, but not worth the money
RT360ci 3 years ago
i have a dead stock 2000 dodge durango with third row seating, 4.7L magnum V8 and i can do dead burn outs from a stoplight blowing white smoke and all. i can imagine if i chiped it and put a flowmaster 40 / forced cold air intake. i mean hell if i can do a stright burn with all stock. lol must be fun to have money to do all thos upgrades
patbou402 3 years ago
Once I can manage the garage space accordingly I want to get a rear wheel drive durango and sink money into that one. My R/T is an everyday driver and I don't plan to do anything more except upgrade the exhaust once this one gets enough holes in it.

Lol you got the same prob I got no space to work on my truck.. Im going to build a Dakota RT soon to go with my Durango build..
By the way my D has over 150K on it with the original drive train and even with the 31x10.5's I still do some big burnouts

Oh well.
RT360ci 3 years ago
You got several problem with this car 1. The Tranmission seem like is not working that good. 2. You got a engine noise . I think you should buy a Ford Explorer v6 gas saver..
bryanharricharan 3 years ago
Why are you driving with OD off? Or is that orange light for something else?
wapce 3 years ago
No, that's my O/D light off. I keep it off when I drive around town and especially in traffic as it saves extra shifting on the transmission. Besides, locking out 4th gear gives me better engine braking and better overall performance. Above 40mph (60km/h) I turn O/D back on.
RT360ci 3 years ago
Damn yours does ping alot. I have a 2000 durango r/t also. I usually put premium in mine or mid-grade. I would never run reg gas in my truck. Pinging is really bad for your engine.
durangotrkrt 3 years ago
Pinging is worse without a chip if I were to run 87. Running 91 and the 87 octane setting on Superchips the ping is nearly non existent!
RT360ci 3 years ago
Oh ok, i run mid-grade sometimes in my R/T and have never had pinging issues.
durangotrkrt 3 years ago
Is your R/T a year 2000 model? If not then you shouldn't have any pinging running regular. 2000 was the only year premium (91) was required.
RT360ci 3 years ago
Yeah i have a 2000. Now i believe there was a recall on mine before i owned it. Cause in the engine bay there is a sticker that the computer was re-programmed from a dealer.
durangotrkrt 3 years ago
What you speak of is known as the 'death flash'. Where some people were complaining of the engines lacking power etc, so the dealers reflashed the computer - which lowered performance even more leading up to the recall. I could do a PCM swap but the cost doesn't justify it as I want to install a manual transmission once this autobox of mine goes and then I'd have to reprogram the computer again anyway!
RT360ci 3 years ago
Yeah prob only went back to a stock 5.9 durango config in the computer. My truck still has plenty of power.
durangotrkrt 3 years ago
To know if you have the so called 'death flash' on your PCM, it will have a sticker on it stating that it has been re-calibrated
RT360ci 3 years ago
How she running no problem?
obamainformation 3 years ago
Mine doesn't have the 'death flash' as the 2000 R/T's have a different PCM from stock 5.9/5.2L that are capable of running on regular fuel. Otherwise mine runs great. Next on my list is to install some 1.7 roller rockers...once the weather gets better of course!
RT360ci 3 years ago
Also, the PCM update was up to the owner to get it done. If they complained about excessive pinging running the required octane, the dealer would change the software which meant a loss in power but at least the engine wouldn't ping. From what I've heard from people on forums mileage even stayed the same but it wasn't much fun to drive. One guy described it as turning a 250hp 5.9L feeling like it was a 175hp 5.0L GM V8 which isn't overly weak, but lacks power to move the 4700lb+ vehicle.
RT360ci 3 years ago
you know what sucks? our 99 durango SLT had no-recals but the tranny went at low miles, as did the joints and bearings, oh and now the control arm is bad too, and this was mainly what they re-called but NO not on our dodge, dammit chrysler!
Theautotech 2 years ago
I have also added modifications such as 52mm TB, taylor wires, superchips (running 91 octane as of today!), K&N FIPK and MSD 6A. It's hard to find a tuner with an AWD dyno in my area, closest one is nearly three hours drive away (that I trust).
RT360ci 3 years ago
Yeah i wish i could do burnouts. lol. i was considering swapping out the transfer case with a NV231. Part-time 4x4
durangotrkrt 3 years ago
I miss the burnouts as well, but here I get 7-8 months of winter weather and the AWD with full time lock can't be beat. I've only ever used 4LO twice while on trails...I just don't have the right tires or clearance for real offroading.
RT360ci 3 years ago
oh i have 34" tires on my truck. 3" body lift. Torsion bars cranked a little, with add-a-leafs in the back.
durangotrkrt 3 years ago
Which add-a-leaf brand did you go with? I'm after some just to level out the rear end when towing. I'm debating if I should spend the extra cash on RSX9000 Rancho adjustable shocks or not too...hmmm decisions
RT360ci 3 years ago
i cant remember. i got them off of ebay. im getting new shocks, going with billisteins.
durangotrkrt 3 years ago
Bilstein's are good! I ran them on other vehicles but I'm really after the adjustable shocks as I have three different trailers with varying tongue weights. The add a leafs will help as well but trying to find them locally is very hard. I'll have to give ebay a try and see what they have.
RT360ci 3 years ago
I got away with running 89 as long as I didn't tow the trailer or put the pedal to the floor...with the trailer I have to use 91...and now with the programmer it requires it anyway.
RT360ci 3 years ago
