Yep, Also the tax payer would have to pay for the damage caused to the police car. Its why our police get tought tactics such as T-PAC to box in and slow down the suspect. Much safer, however it requires a higher IQ and more coordination than the Average US cop has.

Much more damage is done on average to police cruisers by boxing in... Boxing in does not work when a subject has no problem ramming cruisers. It is also more dangerous to the police... The pit limits damage generally to a quarter panel of a single cruiser... BTW US police do use several box type maneuvers, but they are smart enough to know when it's use would be futile...

Maybe someone can help me understand why Cops pursue these guys in the first place? They have their licence plate number why not just have a cop waiting at home for them? The vast majority of runners are for minor infractions and warrants. They're putting everyone on that road at more risk then the overwhelming majority of runners are to society.

Personally I'd rather see someone get away with a stolen car then be in a fatal car accident.

Which is why, in Los Angeles, they have a strict pursuit policy....the field sergeant decides whether the pursuit continues or not and in most cases, it doesn't if anyone is in possible danger. In the case of a felony suspect (shooting, robbery, etc) involving crime against persons, they may continue the pursuit, again it's the sergeant's choice.

I beg to differ. As long as there isn't a chopper, you can get away. "IF" (with emphasis) you can get far enough ahead, take an off ramp, and since the cop is behind, he wont know. If your on a main road, and know the side roads, speed up and take them on, especially if you know the area, just take a bunch of different roads, cops wont have a clue, then get back on the main road after he is no where near you.

Cops need racing training, without it, people CAN get away.

no, the PIT maneuver only works in the us since in the rest of the world, someone who can't avoid the PIT and doesn't have a powerful enough car and experience to run from the cops, wont run from them. Notice how in most of the chases there's always a middle aged guy, driving an automatic 4 door saloon with a shitty engine and no driving experience outside the 55 mph limit. Try doing that to a 25 yo guy who drives an audi rs4 or mitsubish lancer evo every night for the past 5 years.

Yes, the suspected stolen car is captured, but damage done is not in proportion.. So its either return your car/bike, with lots of damage or not one doesn't see it ever again, if cops don't do this. Either possibility is not on my prefer-to list...
