This is a spine tingling version by a master who knows how to give true respect to a song and brings out the raw emotions that were intended for such a beautiful song. She brings Molly back to life.
Sinead's performance of this song brings it alive like no other. Can't you just see Molly and her parents, poor, simple, humble people, living their lives in a time long ago. So few words say so much.....'and that was the end of sweet Molly Malone'......gives me a catch in my throat every time. Sinead elevates what I used to think of as a simple sort of ditty or kids song to one in a class with songs like 'Long Black Veil'. This is more than a singer singing a song, it' an artist at work.
I was wondering why people were singing this tragic song so cheerfully, seemingly oblivious to the pain expressed in it. I'm glad that someone with a far better voice (and far prettier than myself) thought so too, and was able to do justice to the song. This is not just a good rendition. It's the only one that makes sense. Thank you!
This is the most glorious version of "Cockles and Mussels" that I've ever heard. This, to my mind, is how the song should always be sung, with passion and pity, and I absolutely love it. The standing ovation Sinead receives at the end of her performance is thoroughly deserved. The accompaniment is perfect, too. Many thanks to Aaron for drawing my attention to such a gem.
There are few vocalists who can communicate genuine emotion in such a raw and primal form without sounding overly sentimental or forced in any way. Janis Joplin was one such singer. One can tell just from hearing her sing that she hurt in a very deep way. Sinead O'Connor is another such singer.
I sing this to my daughters, it is such a moving portrait of old Eire, Jah bless you Sinead. Give thanks and praise to the most high...............and this coming from a drunk, and professed athiest! JaH!
the problem i have with God is that he put 'bow to the hardest bastard in the room' right there in the core programming, and then kept playing 'lets you fight with him' between every last one of the angels.
I listened to many versions of this very moving and well written song and many belt it out like it's a loud pub song and it's one of deep feeling and spirit. Sinead manifests this so movingly, like none other. She does a shortened version here. I was very dissappointed when her version was removed about a month ago. I'm glad to find this but must turn volume up to highest setting why? Can you repost this with better audio strength? Bless you for posting this!
This version stopped me dead in my tracks. Phenomenal.

I used to sing this to my children also.
They will probably sing it to theirs, I hope.
Kind regards from a Dublin Born girl, who left a LONG time ago.
