This is one of my favourite chokes although i use a different method which i find much more effective. Go watch Jeff Monson north south choke after i saw that video iv been catching people in every session including my sensei for the first time... Yep i subbed a bjj black belt.. not bad 4 a white belt whos only been doing bjj for 6 months!!
Sir, you are AWESOME!!!! I got a submission today with your North-South choke while rolling with an advanced bjj guy... Everyone was like "what was that"? "SUBMISSIONS 101 BABY"!!! I love the Ralph Waldo Emerson quote btw... Thanks again bro!!
The problem is that for self-defense or even for grappling, all he has to do to releave the pressure is the push on your head/neck. That's why he should have showed people to get their head to the SIDE of the person's body and arms after securing the choke position... otherwise, you could end up losing the choke pretty quickly. In a self-defense situation, you could get eye gouged. The choke/crank works, but you need to protect your head more for these reasons.
@gratesaga I've finished someone from north south with an arm in choke, all you have to do is roll your opponent on his side and push your weight into his armpit area to sink in the blood choke.
I have always found this both too easy to defend and too hard to finish. If I stick my chin right into one of their ribs it makes plenty of space to just relax and wait for their arms to get tired. It seems to go the same way when i try it as well. At least against a blue belt or higher. Monson uses it so well because he is actually a human/bull hybrid.
Scott! thanks a lot, man, now my favorite choke is on everyone's radar, haha. great video man. i particularly like the setup with the knee instead of arms.
we had a similar move in the Navy, but we did it standing and from their 6. It's like a guillotine choke, but from behind. You step on the back of their knee and as they are going down you wrap their neck and lock then lift. The submission is instantaneous with no means of escape.

How does that compress the inside carotid artery? I see that the elbow side is compressed but the other side is confusing to me, Thanks

A nice variant is the north-south arm triangle. Similar application with your head next to their shoulder/arm.
