He receives credit for aspects of the game that he was never particularly adept at.  Wings fans are not terribly objective about Yzerman's true legacy. Not the one that was built up by the media. If we believed all that tripe then we should just stop watching hockey because the greatest has already come and gone. Still, inspite of the fact that Stevie was, and is today, a little overrated he should be considered special. I would rank him with Steve Larmer. There's no shame in that.

He was certainly a HOFer. However, he got there based upon the cumulative total of his offensive numbers. He did not have that awe inspiring moment of personal excellence like Gretzky, Messier, Richard, Howe, Orr and even Denis Savard. That is why I compare him to a steady, heady, consistent player like Steve Larmer.

As far as the cup-years are concerned, we should be mindful that the cups came once the Wings realized that Stevie was no longer physically capable of being the focal point.
