Sometimes Grapes can be an idiot. Is it the Leaf's fault that the BRUIN'S played like peewee's?
So, by his logic the Leaf's should just play pass around for the rest of the game? Way to entertain the fans Don! Oh, I know lets have a MERCY rule and end the game after a, what...uh 3, 4 or 5 goal lead? Maybe the Oilers should sit Gretzky after he scores a Hat-trick? As it was it was a magical night for Sittler. Too bad DC has to put a bad spin on it.
Darryl was a great player that had an incredible game, he is one of the greatest Leafs. Of course there have been better players but since Gretzky and Lemieux have not surpassed Sittler I think his record is safe for a while.
I remember watching this game with my dad, a pretty cynical hockey fan. But that night he just watched and smiled. We both laughed when he scored the 10 point (a goal) from behind the net. Great memory thanks to HNIC.
I think the "problem" with some of the scoring records was the quality and style of goal tending back in that era. IMO goalies are so much harder to score on today.
@angeldarklcd Keep in mind also this was at least 3 years before Wayne Gretzky's debut and let's admit it,like him or not,he revolutionized the game. However,he never did register 10 pts. in one game and Darryl Sittler still has those bragging rights over him and everybody else.
Typical of this moron Don Cherry: Take a fantastic performance by a true legend and turn it around and make it all about himself........Yup Mr Cherry, it's all about you, you are such an embarrassment to Canadians!!!
Take that Wayne Gretzky!Super Mario!I wish I was at that game to see history live at MLG. Darryl Sittler played the game of a lifetime and to those who were lucky enough to see it live, I hope they remember what great teams the Maple Leafs had during the mid70s.
i remember that night like it was yesterday. i was watching the game in the living room and there was a feeling of magic that night and it was true. it was so surreal i can't even explain it. kind of like everyone knew something was happening. you just knew he was going to get the next point and it kept happening. so long ago, back in 76 i believe it was. never forget that night.
Wow, for a guy who can post the scores of any game going back over 30 years, it sure is amazing that you don't know that the Bruins played in the Boston GARDEN.
In all likelihood, this is what he was referring to. Minus 1 for your fail.
But don't let the facts get in the way of trying to make someone look bad, eh? It's the internet, so we can all be snarky pricks, right?
The point is that the Leafs didn't show them mercy at home, so the neither did the Bruins in the Boston Garden.
And for the record, every match-up within the next three years between the two teams since the night Sittler scored 10 (in the BOSTON Garden, not MLG): 3/11/1976 - BOS 6 TOR 2 10/15/1976 - BOS 5 TOR 3 1/29/1977 - BOS 3 TOR 3 4/3/1977 - BOS 7 TOR 4 12/4/1977 - BOS 3 TOR 1 2/5/1978 - BOS 3 TOR 3 3/19/1978 - BOS 6 TOR 4 10/15/1978 - BOS 4 TOR 2 11/16/1978 - TOR 6 BOS 4 So, to answer your question, I'd say the streak started at the beginning of those eight straight games.
But I'm sure you'll say, "That's not 3 calendar years!"
Well, if you look at this way, they didn't lose to the Leafs in the Boston Garden for the remainder of the 1975-76 season, the entire 1976-77 season, the entire 1977-78 season, and part way through the 1978-79 season.
I'm counting 2 full seasons, plus two halves, equaling roughly three seasons. If you want to round out the 1978-79 season, we have:
Maybe you need to listen to what Don says."And everytime we came to The Maple Leaf Gardens after that, I put this picture up, and I said to the Bruins, remember, they showed no mercy on us. And for the next three years, we never lost a game at the Gardens." DC never mentions Boston Garden. I know how good the Bruins were, especially at home. I was only adding a little levity, as we know that athletes/coaches like to embellish their stories. You need to relax.
lol, sundin got 6 points a few years back in a 6-5 win, lemiux had an 8 point game in the late 80s and maurice richard had an 8 point game in 1944, 6 points hass been done prolly 100 times
This record could be broken a lot easier than most of the other point records. Nobody will ever touch gretzky's 215 points or 92 goals. This one however, is reachable. Sure it would have to happen on a fluke night with a goaltender playing terribly bad but it happened to sittler that night.
I felt sorry for Reese. His team left him high & dry & he took the lumps for that debacle. Sittler said himself that he felt he was lucky. He was amazed that he could do know wrong that nite.McDonald was on his game that nite as well.2 of the greatest Leafs ever.
Yeah, a bit of luck was involved. Like that last goal, from behind the blue line and off the defenseman's skate into the net, that was ridiculous! 97% of the time, that would never go in.
Wasn`t there another one that bounced off the backboard & in? I know he scored one from behind off Reese`s skate.Nobody was going to wipe the shit eating grin off Darryl`s face. lol

Even Mario and Wayne couldn't duplicate this, so yeah could be a record for a long time.

The next 3 meeting @ MLGs: 4/3/76 Bos 4 Tor 2
10/9/76 Tor 7 Bos 5
11/27/76 Tor 4 Bos 2 So Don, when did the 3 year streak start? Never let the facts get in the way of a good story.
