  • Kanye West wraps it up nicely in his sing "Welcome to Heartbreak": "Chased to good life my whole life long, look back on my life and my life gone."

  • You're not your Facebook status. You're not how many friends you have. You're not the smart phone you own. You're not the apps of your phone. You're not your fucking iPad. You're the all-planking, e-consuming crap of the world."

"Prayer: Either pray to whomever you worship or if not religious, chant a personal mantra."

    I immediately thought of this.

    This is my religion...

  • @killertone83 how? hes smart, hes right.

  • at what moment in the film is that

  • Ok so I try being Tyler and it's so much more meaningful. I no longer do things like a robot. Every single thing I choose to do makes me feel good. I listen to my body's and my brain's needs. I search knowledge that naturally occurs to me and I don't fill my mind with useless info that i'm supposed to worry about. I am in a flow and nothing really upsets me. I have earned the ability to let that which doesn't matter, truly slide. And of course, I'm not special. I'm the all-singing crap.

  • You're not your job.

You're not how much money you have in the bank.

You're not the car you drive.

You're not the contents of your wallet.

    You're not your fucking khakis.

You're the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world.

  • whats he mean when he says "you are the all singing all dancing crap of the world"? whats that part of the quote mean, i dont get it....

  • @smoove002

Being the crap of the world means that the value of your life is that of crap . So he's basically telling you that you are worthless; i feel the quote is supposed to provoke you to change your life and become a strong individual. But that's my interpretation; Tyler probably just said it to make everyone feel like they are not worth much and can never be individuals so that they join his Project Mayhem to feel useful.

  • @princetrunks06 he's reffering to people with values such as their wallet and its contents, their car, their money in the bank and their khakis..he's telling them that with their egocentric perspective they dont worth more than crap to the world.

  • @smoove002

Its is a profound psycho-phylosophical statement. The divisions that we make in time and space and that we define as ''ME'' as opposed as the ''OTHER'' is actually a mind-constructed illusion.

The liberation from this illusion is what Tyler proposes, in the same way as numerous ancient and modern phylosophies. See Buddhism, Einstein, Plato, and the list goes on! And Bliss and freedom is under this illusion to those who search it.

    That's my perspective :)

  • @smoove002 It means that you are nothing special and you can do anything. You are one with this world and you have to understand that you are only limited by natural laws, not the rules you've made. You can be anything, you can do the unthinkable , you can be a leader, you can kill people , you can help people, you can do whatever the hell you want. Life is chaos. You have to give up and understand you have no real home not even your own body, that you were born to do everything. Period"

  • @WTAWWR08 i was confused by the movie, it/you arent promoting the idea of murder right?

  • @gerberberick908 neoluddism and total destruction of the industrial society

  • @gerberberick908

the only person who actually dies is bob and he was shot by a police officer and its not about promoting murder

  • Are most of you really that stupid? Saying "His name was Robert Paulson" or any other quote from the movie means absolutely nothing. Do not point and laugh at someone who thinks the same way Tyler does, because everything he says is true. They are not trying to be a 'wanna-be' Tyler Durden, they are simply stating the obvious. Ugh, they didn't make him to be idolized, and yet everyone is doing that.

  • He is the person who see's the world through fully open eyes. Anyone can do that. He is 'cool', but he isn't supposed to be thought upon as some character that everyone obsesses with. Saying a quote from a movie doesn't show that you understand it, it only shows that you are amused by it.

  • but i love saying his name was robert paulson, its such a classic quote, that makes a good joke

    like,

    "whats the teachers name again?"

    "His name was robert paulson"

  • You really are a boring old fart ss2mike, where's your sense of rebellion? hipocracy or hypocrisy?

  • btw the narrators name is not jack.... in the movie its not mentioned....

  • @SuperPaimei

His name is Tyler Durden. If they are the same person, but rebellious Tyler is an alter ego, then the original is also Tyler Durden.

  • i am jacks nipple

  • His name is Robert Paulson

  • We are consumers -tyler durden i love this moive great video

  • im sick of ppl leaving confused comments on fight clu videos saying "I DONT GET IT, TYLER CONTRODICTS HIMSELF, I DONT GET IT I DONT GET IT, ITS BAD WRITING!" its called hes FUCKING BIPOLAR, people. stop looking at things from only one perspective.

  • Damn right.

  • you mean he has multiple personality disorder

  • @Moocow42495 EXCELLENTLY PUT SIR

  • @Moocow42495 I thought he has dissociative identity disorder. That is his multi-personality. Bipolar is a mood disorder. That is constant mood swings.Swings that go to an extreme pole in a second.

  • @CueWunAye Actually Bipolar is a brain disorder that affects the mood, not a mood disorder!

  • @fsfsfsfsfsfsg Bipolar is classified as a mood disorder by the DSM IV TR.

  • @CueWunAye well I'm only saying it more specifically, because there are people who have mood disorders, but the problem doesn't comes directly from the brain, and being bipolar is a bran disorder! but course bipolar mood changes are drastically and aggressive!

  • @Moocow42495 Well he actually doesn't contradicts himself it's like the bible you have to see it from his " I hate how society is" point of view, but anyways the movie and the book Don't Talk about how life sHould be, it's about how things ARE!

  • em....eee...... shut up

  • I agree, Tyler kinda contradicts himself. He promotes being a rebel and going against a set way of life we are to follow set by society, yet he pretty much ropes everyone into this set lifestyle. I definitely think, however, this movie brings up a good point that we're all living inside the box that we've made for ourselves. We need to realize we can do more than just slave away and try to gather as many possessions as we can and try to be as close to the ideal person as we can.

  • You guys are so...laughable. I always thought I had to keep watching but man.

Here's what I think. Tyler is the part of the Narrator, who we will name Rupert, that is willing and able to perform immortal and psychologically impossible acts against Rupert's will. While one might assume he is contradicting himself or being critical, it is actually the duel between an unaware Rupert and a knowing Tyler, who never quite existed to begin with. As Tyler states, Rupert is "still struggling" with it...

  • And every now and then he "slips" back into himself. Tyler's personality/his entity stands by what he says, but he is struggling with a battle between the more dominant and reliant parts of Rupert's mind that are in control. It is RUpert's actions that contradict Tyler's values, and vice versa.

I laughed when I finally figured out what Tyler said during the last fight.

"WOOAH! You are now shooting at your IMAGINARY FRIEND - next to FOUR HUNDRED GALLONS OF NITROGLYCERIN!"

    *shoots again*

    OOOH!

  • This demonstrates the above exactly - its like putting a person with multiple personality disorder (no pun intended) into two split bodies - putting the SMART and CAPABLE half against the DUMB and RELUCTANT one. In this case, Rupert (JACK, whatever you need to call him) while smart is reluctant, as Tyler states, because Tyler is composed of all of the Narrator's BEST and most intriguing characteristics.

In my previous example, Tyler is the "constant" and Rupert is the "occasional"...

  • sense of genius, at least in the Fight Club universe. Tyler is constantly in control of the world he is in, he is collected and never worries. But that is because he is the ESSENCE of coolness from Rupert's perspective, like the Matrix somewhat, while Rupert is all of the other little personality traits left behind whenever TYLER is visible. Ever notice how Rupert is slightly edgier, daring, interesting, and cooler when Tyler is not in a scene or present?

  • But I guess, more to what I was trying to say about that particular scene I liked overall.

While Rupert has all of these plot twists and emotions running about him, sweating and panicking at the thought of having to fight Tyler who he non-objectively views as INDESTRUCTIBLE, Tyler is focused on his goal and the dangers to himself as Rupert. Rupert is following the typical movie lines, he NEEDED to shoot at Tyler who is the antagonist because that makes sense.

    Tyler, however...

  • knows full well that they are STANDING next to nitroglycerin that will blast them into bloody jelly if detonated. This part had me curious as well because I noticed that it was one of two moments in the entire film where Tyler appears to be truly frustrated or spooked, in other words, out of character.

So to hear him be all "WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU" is a verbal and mental bitchslap to both Rupert and the audience who probably forgot what Rupert was REALLY shooting at in that scene.

  • Cause I think, at least what I think, most people wish the most about Fight Club is that Tyler was REAL and not just a personality amalgram. I sure as hell do, that almost, in a way, ruins the film when you rewatch it, but it makes you laugh at how well the plot is constructed to prevent Tyler's true ideals hidden.

Even when we know he's fake, we watch the movie and the scenes afterward again seeing him as something real, Mr. Brad Pitt here, he is there for us to awe at.

  • @Momentum139 Your explanations are awesome. Well done. Now, I want you to hit me as hard as you can

  • @WTAWWR08 THIS IS YOUR LIFE. GOOD TO THE LAST DROP-DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS. THIS IS YOUR LIFE AND IT IS ENDING ONE MINUTE AT A TIME. NOTHING IS STATIC EVERYTHING IS EVOLVING EVERYTHING IS FALLING APART. YOU HAVE TO GIVE UP. YOU HAVE TO REALIZE THAT SOMEDAY YOU WILL DIE. 'TIL YOU KNOW THAT, YOU ARE USELESS. EVOLVE & LET THE CHIPS FALL WHERE THEY MAY. YOU HAVE TO GIVE UP.

  • get it right, the narrators name in the movie is jack and in the book its joe.

  • I said I AM for that matter calling him Rupert because that was the first time his name is mentioned in the movie and I prefer it, plus where in the movie is his name mentioned as Jack? He has multiple false alias, I am ruling out the novel because I have never read the novel nor do I intend to in the near future nor did I ever claim to have done so.

  • @Momentum139 When he says I am jacks waisted life. or I am jacks complete lack of surprise. Hes referring to how the book referred to the organ in first person in the basement. when he reads i am jills nipple. So in turn he is subtly telling us his name in a creative way. In the book he uses joe instead of jack.

  • my thoughts exactly... i have never read the novel, but have watched the movie numerous times... and the scene where rupert / jack / whatever is reading the diary pages while brad pitt is riding around on the bike has always struck me as a way of naming edward nortons character in the film

  • @NKdude

He wanted to "enslave people to show them freedom". The people he affected did not have the strenght to change their lives. By setting his new path, he showed them not only that they are capable of changing their own life, but that they have the power to change history.

  • lol man everyone on here is so funny LOL...tyler durden is a fuckin great character and all that but... do you guys even follow what he says? i mean just talking about his theories makes you hypocritical lolol... he was a genius in his own world...he manipulates people in a way that they can relate...he's just like a politician... if you follow him you're just contradicting your own belief in him LOL if you understand what i mean...he's genius but cmon guys...be real LOLOLOL...seriously.

  • Actually, thats what I like about the movie the most, its self-ironic. Tyler Durden exclaims that we have become followers of a consumer way of life, yet if we follow Tyler Durden, it still doesn't change the fact that we're still sheep part of a much bigger plot.

  • That's the major irony of humanity: to believe in freedom when we always wished to be led.

  • If only people would understand this, things would be a lot better.

There wouldn't be celebrity tabloid bullshit, no one would care when dumbass fashion magazines, there wouldn't be empty zombies out there buying stuff to fill their lives, etc.

  • you're right, but why do you care? it's their world, their life.

  • tyler durden is my jesus this should of been the trailer for the film

  • finally i ended up running almost in the pure darkenss towards nowhere and LUCKILY i found myself on the same road i was standing before entering the woods. AFTER THAT NOTHING MATTERED. ...i saw this movie AFTER my story took place, and it had the same message - NOTHING MATTERS, FUCK OFF WITH YOUR IDEALISM. I thought i would never find such people, who have faced something like this and have their eyes opened and suddenly i find out that there is a film based on the same idea.

  • I understand exactly what you mean.

  • You're not your fk'n khakis. LOL.

  • Maybe for once this isn't about heaven or hell, take your head out of others beliefs and what others like and realize something, Life is life for a reason. Why would god make 100 years of us worrying? There will always be distrust and disbelief in this world, you sticking your nose into what others like will only get your nose broken off. Half of our society is already devolving. Losing Smarts and physical ability for the sake of their job and their plasma screen t.v,

  • then let it be.

  • Actually the bible tells you not to be materialistic. By following Tyler you wouldn't be committing the sins extravagance, gluttony, greed, despair, envy, pride or vainglory. The narrator is also an insomniac so you can throw sloth out the window. He is violent but at the same time he doesn't really get angry so he doesn't actually commit the sin wrath (granted this is a weak argument).

Good can be learnt from anyone. Whether that person is a saint or a sinner.

  • this film is not about words... When im on the bus, going back from school, sometimes i just watch people and think what fuckin puppets they are - like omg there is a scratch on my car, i feel so sad; i want to work more, so i can buy more shit - as then they work so fucking hard and end up having huge responsibilities and no joy of life! Everything, what people believe, how they understand LIFE is so UNtrue, and its so hard to explain that living by a "LIFE MANUAL" is JUST NOTHING!

  • omg shut up you are a fuckin wanna-be tyler durden hahahahahaha get alife ya dirty girl

  • talking with no arguments is NOTHING aswell.

  • Likin' it likin' it

  • And you've never once felt sadness when an object you adored became damaged? You've never as a child broken your favorite toy and felt your heart sink? I do believe that you should avoid materialism but at the same time it's only through the honest observation and admission of our present and past selves that we find tolerance in others.

  • I was the same as most of you. Everything changed when I nearly died while lost in the woods - alone, cloudy nightfall, almost 8:00PM, my phone is dead, - you would ask how did i get into this - the answer is i wanted to make a shortcut. I had to make over 2-3km through that forest, it sounded ok, but as i was walking half-way through i heard something running towards me, jumped THE FUCK into the tree. I was sitting there for bout an hour, it got darker and i felt totaly disorietated.

  • oooooooooo :)

  • @LTinvasion

How ignorant are the young who can only see the beginning and middle of the movie, but not the end.

  • so much of what is said in the movie is true, I'm part of a disenchanted generation of men, this world isn't made for us.

  • Seriously. I look around and all I see are dumbasses racing after glitz and glamour and attention.

Most of the "men" out there try to impress each other by sleeping with a ton of girls, flexing their platinum credit cards, and brown-nosing to get a promotion.

  • does anyone know how to do this effect?

  • The distortion effect near the end?

  • yea, the whole wobbly part

  • you need two cameras filming at two slightly different angles, then switch between em really fast

  • On IMDB or somewhere, I read that it's the effect you get when film on a projector becomes loose.

  • @WP06 yes how you do that?

  • After effects? Tried to play around with it?

  • @pkgrip Try adobe premier or use actual reels of film and have the sound recorded and slowed

  • my favourite line of this movie....cuz its so true

  • i am jacks love for this movie

  • "The people you are after are the people you depend on, we cook your meals, we haul your trash, we connect your calls, we drive your ambulances, we guard you while you sleep, DO NOT FUCK WITH US" - Tyler Durden

  • man...brad pitt made such a good performance on this movie...when I see him like in red carpet and all those celebrities shit, i don't see Brad Pitt, I see Tyler Durden

  • I know this, because Tyler knows this. :P

  • "What' That Smell?"

  • i am jack's petty remark

  • does anyone know were i can get the jacket that he's wearing??

  • google ''soulrevolver''. its a website with leather jackets. then go to the ''movie replica'' section

    voila! its a nice jacket

  • looks like a regular motorcycle jacket

  • Fuck society

  • @JasonSeager Fuck the monetary system.

  • @pepemark agreed, if only more people knew how it worked

  • @JasonSeager shall we make some bombs then and have ourselves some fun?

  • Obviously i've seen the movie.

  • yeah that's right

  • he looks like me on a satuday night lol!!!

  • This is fucking sick.

  • NO! You´re fuckig sick! You don´t even understand this..
