Humorous such a great documentary on a great architect would end with a work the narrator "hates". Poignant, and purposely austere (the art museum in Berlin), is meant to vacate the mind of drivel, by vacating the structure of the triteness of "human purpose".
The vacuity is precisely the point. If you don't get it, it means when you find emptiness...then all you turn up is "nothing". Art is the lie...the lie that tells the truth, without it the ultimate truth is there, by not being there.
I was in Montreal for a few days and took a look at his Westmount Square development. beautiful buildings atop a classy little mall. Not unlike Toronto's dominion center which i think is my favorite of his works. I would love to live in a building like that.
I loved this documentary up until he discredits the National Gallery saying "works of art cannot be hung..." Looking at the date of completion one can see that this was built right at the uprising of modern contemporary art. Mies was provoking and accommodating new ways of displaying and experiencing art. He did not intend for the ground level gallery to display fine art of the past, rather offer an adaptable environment for any type of exhibition or instillation.
fantastic doc though I dont agree with Hughs on theNew National Gallery in Berlin - generocity of space- sub-ordination of art - the element of space- good on acid !
Does the narrator realize that the universal space is used for special exhibitions of art pieces, and he happened to film during a point in time when there wasn't an exhibition?
I dont agree at all with his dissaproval of the neue national gallerie in Berlin. On the contrary, I've seen different kinds of expositions on the first floor and they can be displaced on their own. And the reflections of the glass and the interior and the exterior are quite amazing.
He contradicted him self ,earlier he said there is no bad Mies but boring Mies .but hear he does say there is bad Mies when its boring, I'd have a talk with the editor if I was him.

@atarian2049 I would not think it unlikely that that was an intentional move on Hughes' part, used to emphasis his point.

@juanabogotana Well, from what I saw of the art in this video, I'd say the architecture was the best part.
