I liked when in Shenmue you had to drive around the harbor doing work, and working for all those sailors. And then you had to find out what bars they hang out at.

so instead of the jukebox there was a slot machine in the arcade..

they must have not made the slot machine place then

also the shrine has 2 fences instead of stairs

and getting a can from the vending machine was also different as your finger angled and you threw the can into your left hand

there was a square blue design on ryo's sheets and the cupboard next to his bed was empty. there was a pen in the drawer and a calendar above the drawers

interesting to see how it looked in earlier versions

I still remember going to Disney Land and they had a Dreamcast section with a game of Shenmue set up. Shenmue was one of the best games I've played.

It was my idea that they had already surpassed it in those endeavors. A decade is a long time, my friend. Name one thing Shenmue had that modern games like GTAIV, Saints Row III, or other open world games haven't done yet. Hell, even The Witcher 2 has wandering NPC's in the same manner that Shenmue did.

There's not a single scrap of Shenmue that someone else hasn't shown up to do better these days except maybe the fighting system.

Quite dIsheartening if you think about it. Open world games are known for being GTA clones, when it was Shenmue who did it first.

As for the NPC thing, The Witcher 2 did just that--odd that it took almost 10 years to get there.

All in all, Shenmue was a basket case of ideas way too visionary for its time and crumbled under the weight of screwy over-budget development, bad management, bad marketing, and the first steps of some shoddy control schemes here and there.

@unabomberman Yu Suzuki never ran out of ideas. Shenmue 3 was always intended to be a big change in direction, innovating character interaction in games. I would assume there would be several changes during the whole story that we just don't know about. Problem is, new concepts is a hard sell now that Sega's bosses are so much more cautious than they used to be.

Oddly, the Yakuza games are now often described as having dated gameplay, but in Japan they make a lot of money. Go figure.

Yeah. It's just a hard pill to swallow in the fact that Sega has innovated over and over again and they still come up second; first with the sound chip of the Master System, then with an actual 16-bit console, net-play, open world games, and even the freaking VMU--remember that thing?

Shenmue was the shite 10 years ago, but today modern games have just picked away at the bones and have left nothing left; and nothing short of innovation would serve the series, which SEGA won't do.
