The Camaro has a Holden chassis and suspension. The Zeta platform that the Camaro uses is an Australian design. The VE Commodore was using this platform since 2006, 4 years before the Camaro was released.
And the Commodore are built in Adelaide, South Australia. Not Asia.
That is the major reason they went bankrupt ,,, OK .
I have traveled in Eastern Europe
and I saw FORD focus , and other Ford models are very popular , and they make a Focus which runs on Diesel ..
Also USA made Chevrolet Aveo is also popular , new Dodge Durango comes with 6 cylinde engine, Usually , E.Europeans buy small cars, which run 30-35 miles per gallon , GAS over there is 4.20 $ ,,, a gallon.
That would be called a Pontiac G8 GXP here in America. Try going to the dealership sometime and driving one...even the G8 GT. They are very nice cars, but people don't realize it.
It's not that GM makes bad cars. Many cars are best in class, it's just GM sucks at management. If they had better management, they're situation wouldn't be as bad as it is now.

The whole theory that you guys put out regarding product is just crap, sorry to say.
GM did just what enthusiasts like myself have been asking forever, and that is importing foreign products. Turns out the two good ones that sell great are sales disasters here.
And it's not just that either, sales of the industry as a whole have tanked for the past couple of months and it's got nothing to do with product (which is the point you're trying to make), it's because nobody can get loans to buy cars anymore and since the vast majority of car sales are done over credit, the automakers aren't getting the money they need to keep the wheel rollin', be it development or whatever you can think about.
And vehicles like the Cruze to me don't represent that much needed homerun, in 2010 the foreign competition will most likely come par with it. the problem is not the "type" or "style" or "bells and whistles" that american cars supposedly dont have anymore
remember.. the problem for the big three as of late is that people are not interested (IE less demand)in buying vehicles that arent fuel efficient
the reason this is important to an american now is that he cannot afford to pay $4 or more per gallon to drive a tank to work everyday, which is the product line the big 3 needs to survive
which would mean that the big three needs to work toward differentiating their product... by creating more affordable and fuel efficient alternatives to the massive tanks they sold in the first place
....so if you want to say that the problem has nothing to do with their product, perhaps you can think again
right... yet people are still not buying enough vehicles from detroit to keep it afloat
do not forget that the price of oil is bound to increase to and eventually beyond its recent levels due to supply controls on behalf of OPEC and its leech countries
which means that people will still be forced to find cheaper vehicles to purchse, fuel, and maintain
which means that they will have the choice of buying a fuel efficient import or american car... which will need to improve in quality
What part of 'it's not just Detroit' don't you understand? It's got NOTHING to do with oil prices. The F-series gained back its throne and truck sales are still dominating now that the gas crunch is over, it's just that everyone's seeing the market shares crumble this year with the exception of Mini and Subaru, and I can back that up with data while you're just spouting random crap about 'people remembering'. I don't remember people remembering the last gas crisis when they bought their SUVs.
GM has been lazy and underselling their cars overseas. It took 15 years to get the Hummer to undertake a simple left/right hand conversion to sell in Australia. Australians are frustrated that really good GM cars (ie Corvette) has never been realsed locally too.
GM has been slow about releasing their world class models everywhere. Why is it that a company like Toyota can make an overall great car, like a Camry, modify it to local markets and have similar product offerings worldwide when GM is simply unable to utilize a global platform for cars?
But thats a whole differnet ball game, Ford, GM, Chevy, have all had there bad times, GMC has had it for along time, since 1987
Pre 87 models(Trucks and such) were the best! Absolutely great work trucks, and powerful moters that wouldn't die! Ford in my opinion has had very good, strong trucks, since the 70s, they had two very great IDI diesel engines(6.9L and the great a loved 7.3) and then they went really cheap, and now are just starting to come back!
Your theory doesn't make any sense. Why do they not deserve a bailout because they make holdens that aren't available in the US? Who's to say that anyone would buy them. Our current economy indicates that nobody would.
I think it's indicative of poor quality control and completely uninspired models. There are some awesome Vauxhaul/Holden/Opel models that are sold ocerseas that put a Chevy or Cadillac to shame for the same price. American cars are not competitive with their design and options relative to the competition in the US market. I also think the current US brand line-up is so tainted they need to flush the current brands down the toilet and start importing overseas GM brands to change perceptions
I TOTALLY agree with this video! The best cars are, and have been, built overseas. The UK Ford models - the Ka and Mondeo - are AWESOME cars. So is Ford's UK version of the Focus, believe it or not. I've seen the Holdens from Australia covered in US auto mags. Yes, they're nice cars, well built, too. What the heck is wrong with US cars looking this good? Where are the fuel-efficient cars? GM teased us with some small city-runners that looked great, too. NO BAILOUTS!
GM's world market is good, Im a big fan of the Monaro and the VX220, but in America they are crap and they made terrible business decisions. I think they got whats coming to them.... too bad for the workforce and their families.
Thank you for your snide comment. In Australia, they drive on the left hand side, and the driver is located on the right hand side of the car. Therefore, I am in the passenger seat if I am in the front left hand side of the car. What part of "be more respectful of your comments" did you not understand?
Asking these people to be respectful of their comments is like raising your voice when trying to speak with a deaf person. They didn't understand you the first time so if you feel inclined its better to just come back with some nice well delevered slam to PWN their ass so they look substanially more ignorant than they first appeared to be.
The lack of the bailout is going to destroy the economy, but you know...its been a long day coming since the 70s when they started polluting the streets.
I agree with you. I love GM but the cars they make in Europe are way better.its just I feel there isn't any good competition in America. All the cars are Gas Guslers and Everyone wants BIG CARS and if they wanna save gas lets get a Toyota or a honda.
Even the Accord and Camry are SIGNIFICANTLY larger and much more powerful than their 1980's and mid 1990's counterparts. Do family sedans really need 280+ HP like the new Nissan Maxima?
as long as you can make a vehicle that gives decent milage, yes it is okay to have 280+ HP maximas.
Maximas last beyound 200K miles, good robust vehicles, low maintenance, and yes around 19-20 in city, 24-25 on freeway. What more do you want? Camry and Accord can be compared with Altima, and not maxima.
Your comparison has fundamental flaws, but we can talk about it.
The 1998-2002 version of the Altima got 34 on the highway, and the Maxima was in the high 20's. My point is even Japanese cars, once famous for awesome mileage, have given up a lot of their efficiency for the sake of power. Do I really need a 300+ HP car to get a jug of milk?
alright. now it makes sense, but aren't they offering those cars too. Altima still gives 30 MPG if you buy a 2.5 series. But now I have an option of buying a 3.5 if I want. I want 3.5 because it gives me the joy of riding a midsize car which is powerful and still below 30K. I was a student when I bought it so couldn't afford a 40K lexus which I can today but wanted to buy a car that day. does that make sense! :)
not everyone is a car enthusiast, basing their purchase on power and performance, or sleek lines. the average american buys a car because its DECENT looking, it fits what they need(kids seat)groceries..etc. and is good on gas and insurance rates. if everyone were car enthusiasts, yeah then you could blame their sales on ugly cars that drive like shit.(aside from a few)
The C pillars seem substantially different, as are the engine options, the width, the tire heat vents, the front fascia and the lamps.... So does the position of the trunk. I think a lot of the parts are shared because it has a GM platform. Please be respectful with your comments.
Sales teams are simply pushed into producing results instead of actually listening to customers. That's nothing new. Somehow people think management by fear and intimidation works better than management by instilled desire.
GM saw a lot of these things and made some improvements on the issues with the Saturn lineup. Why do you think Saturn isn't more popular brand than it is?
What is killing US automakers is pathetic, overpaid management who wouldnt know a good car design if it bit them on the ass and unionised slobs who couldnt get a job cleaning toilets in the real world who are earning $48 an hour plus benefits. They are all bleeding the companies to death.
The Australian car shown was also built with Union labor. In Australia: mandatory $15/Hr minimum wage, minimum of 4 weeks of vacation per year WITHOUT a union.... I think unionized labor has succeeded in making quality products worldwide. It should also be noted non-union factories in the US pay about the same salary/benefits as the unionized ones do.
Do you think they are trying to do too many things at once, and the sheer number of brands makes it too difficult for them to focus on a few top notch models, a la Honda?
they dont sell those in America because GM knows americans are stupid and will pay the same for something ugly useless and broken with paint peeling problems.
Are you sure? Other car makers are continuing to erode domestic brand market share. There is also a perception that imported cars are of substantially higher quality too. The market seems to have moved substantially against domestic players.

The C pillars seem substantially different, as are the engine options, the width, the tire heat vents, the front fascia and the lamps.... So does the position of the trunk. I think a lot of the parts are shared because it has a GM platform. Please be respectful with your comments.

Id be a lot happier with 40. Again, possible generational differences. I'd take a Nissan Tiila (Australian) against a Cobalt anyday.

Using sex to sell cars, or anything else for that matter, is nothing new. I simply don't see the issue. I think this might be a generational thing.

No Bailout!

Could they please, just get ONE car under $17,000 right that is a legitimate, QUALITY Civic and Corolla killer?

they dont sell those in America because GM knows americans are stupid and will pay the same for something ugly useless and broken with paint peeling problems.

Are you sure? Other car makers are continuing to erode domestic brand market share. There is also a perception that imported cars are of substantially higher quality too. The market seems to have moved substantially against domestic players.
