Absolutely right! When I had a rehearsal in Berliner Staatsoper all men who aren´t tenors, sang Madamina,Il Catalogo È Questo ^^, its propably Mozarts best aria for all kind of men-voices, because it has the perfect range for a men´s average voice.
It is, like you said perfectly, sort of standard, I find no better words ;-)
Its so interesting, how different that aria can be interpreted, I heard it from real basses and also lyric baritones, its like an aria of the whole men´s universe
Yeah, this is possible, no doubt, but I would prefer a real bass to sing Leporello especially this aria and its very interesting, that Ilebrando sang it more mature when he was older and I liked it quite a lot!
Hm, I think that it(always) comes to personal taste when you hear a singer, no matter what fach he has, if you like him, you like him; quite simple! I like more darker voices because they sound more like REAL male voices and not to bright like many other ones.
I noticed that Italian baritones make the best Leporellos, it must be the fluidity of their lingo that gives them an advantage, and not just their vocal cords....
I like d'Arcangelo's top notes and actually his lower notes aren't too bad either in this aria... I especially like the fresh, witty and playfull conducting of Gardiner in this!
Saw Giovanni last night. (9 Dec-Metopera) Sexy D'arcangelo sang and acted circles around the too casual, too sloppy Schrott Can't wait to see him as the Don. The worse staged last scene I've ever seen. Polenzani's Dalla sua pace was the best I've heard in a long time.
Saw him do the Don last summer. His Don is oily and un-charming...his stage presence small and rodent-like. Doesn't sing the arias very well, either--he nearly flattened himself with the champagne aria. And the serenade...meh, not enough legato.
That said, I like his voice, and he has darn good top notes. I just don't like how he uses it and don't think he looks convincing as the character...to me, the Don has more a masculine, nobleman-like presence. Example, Pinza. Even Keenlyside.
Yeah, the Commendatore scene was shamefully done. Snow? Singing offstage while there's an actual statue onstage? Boo. Yeah, Ildebrando and Matthew were great. So was Krassimira Stoyanova.
i don't really mean to sound gay-ish, but if that guy is leporello then who on earth played Don Giovanni?? lol

@Doika86 - In this particular recording, Rodney Gilfry was Don Giovanni.

I'm sorry, but this doesn't come near Ferruccio Furlanetto's interpretation of Leporello.

@arpeggio1358 I agree Furlanetto is for me the best Leporello,

He's a bass-baritone, not a pure baritone
TheKickstarter91 3 years ago
He's a dark lyric baritone. I've heard him - he just has a lower extension. The depth, weight, and presence of a bass baritone just isn't there.
That said, he's got a beautiful voice.
Chiliarches 3 years ago
Bass. He was only 25 at the time the recording was made.
