Pop music is simple, hook-based, easy to digest by almost anyone (and there are GOOD pop artists - Katie B, Adele, Winehouse, Junior Boys.. - out there as well as bad) while Rock is edgier and less conventional. Lines can blur. Nickelback would fall under 'pop' while bands/artists like Radiohead, Gorillaz, Hendrix, Clash, Pearl Jam, Kiss, Nick Cave, etc. under 'rock'.

Each of these have managed to make lots of money but still stay true to their art - admittedly a difficult thing to do considering the demands of the industry..
