I generally don't like when opera singers sing lied because it's often with the same kind of histrionics required for opera. But Prey has proven himself an excellent lied singer by virtue of his sensitive interpretation and vocal restraint.
@kopczas I admit the recording with Karl Engel is fabulous, but I thought this pianist did a rather good job creating a very intimate mood. What don't you like about him?
Are you kidding me folks?! This man is SO in tune with the music...with this SPECIFIC work. You certainly cannot fault him for a couple of "high notes". Wonderful interpretation!!!!
I think this is one of the best versions of Ich grolle nicht on YouTube, regardless of past comments. It is certainly superior than the laughably brisk Wunderlich rendition. I find it relatively vocally sound. My complaint lies with the pianist who fails to discover the nuance and beauty of the piano part and heavy-handedly plows along. Dommage!
Thank You for being direct & Frank about this performance. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I also happen to like the Fischer-Dieskau preformance on DGG from the 1950's. The accompaninist is right on w/the tempo & nuances - Nicht so Schnell. This is towards the end of Prey's career. He was quite ill even when recording this performance. His intonation sounds fine to me. His nuances of passion & frustration come out @ the right time - sounds like romanitcism to me. Listen @ 1:30 & 5:25.
well, what can one say...? famous singer with a great sound. but this is just not good. he seems to have no idea about the score, it´s out of the romantic style and it´s out of tune. simply bad. schwartzkopf would never let this through...
Fantastic, masterful performance! i LOVE his performance "Ich grolle nicht." He completely sustains the tone and intensity throughout this slower-than-usual performance--a real feat. And the emotional crescendo creates a stunning climax.
This is definitely a gem for Hermann Prey fans - but I totally agree: Ich grolle nicht - is hmm - bizarre, strange, intellectual, without passion, misunderstood, based on an idea - and not the idea of the lied, I'm afraid... sorry Hermann - sorry fans - sorry Schumann
Hi "ekstragrim", I have to disagree with a coupple of things you said. I think that each lieder singer has a different approach to the lied based (of course) in his/her idea of how to sing the piece. In my opinion the way Prey interpreted this, was based in his idea of how he should have sung it.
And the other adjetive in which I do not agree is "without passion". If you compare it with other versions, Prey´s must be one of the most passionates of all.
Thanks for uploading this. I almost agree, but i think this Lied is completely passional. He cannot hold the stoiscism of the beginning and it becomes madness, desesperation and pathetic fallacies, big lies, the bigger the closer to the higher note (is this A?). That is passion. Danke Herman, danke Schubert und danke Heine.
Hermann Prey was an fabulous bariton but, in my opinion, he was here already ill.
For example, look in YouTube, Prey's "Graf Eberstein" and other Lieder from the same performance: his illness is obvious, despite his voice is still very good.
As far as I know, Prey died of a heart attack and for what I have heared it was not something expected at all. So I do not know what illness are you talking about.
And one more thing, he died in 1998, July 22nd of 1998.
You are right: 1989 is an evident number mix-up (89 for 98).
As regards the other matter, after seeing the videos I have mentioned (Graf Eberstein, Der Feuerreiter, etc.), I was convinced that HP has suffered from an illness that progressively have take him to his death (really, he can hardly stand).
But, if it is not like that, Im sorry by my mistake, and I thank you for your explanation.
I am a fan of HP, but this is hardly his best performance. What is interesting, however, is that for some reason he always sounds flat on recordings, but not in person. There is something about the upper harmonics that are lost in recordings. And the sheer power and profound resonance of his voice can only be experienced in person.
It's an example for every aspiring singer and a reminder for him/her to embrace humility and to strive for perfection by studying the material with profound respect.
Thank you SO much for posting this amazing, moving and instructive video.

You wrote "Dictherliebe" instead of "Dichterliebe" in the title.
However, thank you for posting! I love it!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Am I the only one who notices that he screws up the climax of this having to get off of the high note too quickly because he doesn't quite make it?

I rather like this interp.of "Ich Grolle Nicht" He treats it seriously, as it is about the emotions of Love, Loss, Anger, and Betrayal..

muy bueno, aunque este Lieder es mas para un tenor que para un baritono bajo como el.
jewish1972 3 years ago
No creo. Se oye muy raro con tenores. Pero una excelente interepretacion con tenor, es la de Ian Bostridge.

This is a demostration (a very clear one I might add) that Hermann Prey was a thoughful student of his music.
