  • very nice

  • For the first time I really understand the interplay of the bass and higher parts. When you can see them you can understand them better in a structural sense.

  • I don't like the interpreatation of this song by the orchestra. I miss the sound of triumph and glory, it's to slow, to heavy and ther choir is yelling and not singing... (I know, that this is ONLY MY oppinion!)

But by the way: Great work, smalin, I love your channel! :-)

    Greatings from Germany.

  • why are some squares fuzzy down below the notes???

  • @papiroazul See the FAQ.

  • @smalin sorry I didn't see the faqs, thanks

you do a great work :)

  • isn't it Friederic instead of Frideric?

  • @Anathiron "Frideric" is how he was spelling it at the time he wrote this piece.

  • my reaction when i saw the first snowfall

    :D

  • Are you open to suggestions? Could you, please, do the Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 5 in F Major Op. 76 (1875)?

I think you shouldn't do the whole symphony but only the 2nd movement (it's the best part)...

  • @joti88888 Sorry, I don't like Dvorak's music enough to listen to it as much as is required in the making of a video.

  • @smalin that's a shame :( but thanks for your reply :)

  • Handel Did Work

  • We are doing this for our high school performance with choir and it isn't very hard(I play cello) but seeing it come together like this is really incredible and I have a new respect for it thanks for posting this!!

  • it's "Messiah", not "The Messiah" :)

  • @LittleWing53 Thanks; fixed.

  • @smalin I'm sure in the context of the title, 'The Messiah' is correct. I think he is just a bit pedantic

  • @DanSandwich No, I checked, and "Messiah" is correct.

  • the lyrics are so simple :)

  • What instrument does the faint white bars at the bottom represent?

  • @TheRimDoctor Timpani.

  • HALLELUJAH!

  • anyone else notice at the part "Hallelujah" is sung a cross is made?

  • Que letra!

  • A blessing to the soul, thank you for posting.

The 1742 premiere was a charitable benefit which freed 142 men from debtor's prison and future performances fed/clothed the poor, fostered orphans and funded the Foundling's Hospital.

  • @michaelbyrnes2012 one of the few times religion has resulted in something positive.

  • @TheRimDoctor Not really. Religion might have slowed down for many centuries the progress of science and technology, but the seek for spiritual highness inspired us to do beautiful pieces of music and art. Two sides of the same coin.

  • i thought you could only do this bar graph thing with a MIDI file. but the song being played is definitely not a MIDI as it has full choir, orchestra, etc. and not just synthesizers

  • @smartperson0906 True, but the graphics were made from a MIDI file.

  • @smartperson0906 Use a midi file, paste a real track over it.

    Done. Another mystery solved.

  • @TheRimDoctor Thank you Watson, now unto our next mystery: Where is Waldo?

  • @TheRimDoctor XD lol!

  • This is very interesting!!

As each note has a colour, would be good to talk with kinestesic people who actually can see colours with different notes and then use that to give the animation a more "realistic" gamma.

  • He wrote it in Dublin, Ireland, not England.

  • @smalin secular then? ;-)

  • @smalin i don't think you're mistaken about this. i just wanted to explain, why (maybe) it is "handel" in englisch and not "händel.

  • @kruemeltobi Back then, when people moved from one country to another, they often changed their names to match the local convention (people do this now, too, but less often). Handel could've kept the German spelling of his name if he'd wanted (Georg Friedrich Haendel), but he changed all three names; this makes me doubt that the lack of an umlaut in English was the reason.

  • I played this song right after I lost my virginity :D

  • Can you do Bach's Agnus Dei?Mass in B minor.

  • Very nicely done, as always. I only regret that this version is pretty awfully interpreted in my (not so humble) opinion. And the the timbals are missing. But I understand that you would need to pay royalties if you chose better interpretations. That's a pity, given that so many youtubers discover these musics through your incredible work.

  • where is the tympani part ??

  • @xanimefanNgamerx Naww,"Hallelujah" is a Swedish word meaning "The pie here is terrific". :o) (The Swedish love their pies)

  • These vids always leave me with a big smile of pleasure and satisfaction. You're creating a rich and wonderful library. Bravo!

  • awsome composer

  • one of the greatest german composers of all times!

  • I'm crying!!!

  • Thanks a million! As a music teacher I found it fantastic for illustrating the difference homophony and polyphony. And that famous 5 note lead of the trumpet in 2'36" - amazing! What a wonderful job you've done!

  • Händel, not Handel...

  • @denad2 When he lived in England (which is where he was when he wrote this), he spelled it Handel.

  • @smalin yes but just because there is no "ä" in the englisch language ;) and it's "Friedrich" and not "Friderich" ;)

  • @smalin ... To make it easier for the nativ english man to pronounce his name. Its Händel...

  • @1812over2 That's one way of looking at it. The other is that it *was* Händel.

  • holyday loot

  • Is it a good thing or a bad thing that I could sing along to the Basso 2 part without the words?

Now I want you to put up Vivaldi's Gloria, I sang that in St Mark'n in Venice last year so I know that quite well too.

  • @EruantienDeasar haha same for first tenor! and we did VIvaldi in Salisbury Cathedral in the UK xD

  • j'adore smalin!

  • maybe you already heard this... I love you Smalin... T_T what did you use to make this? can I print it and past it on my wall, it'll look amazing.

  • @kuddos For "how to," please see the FAQ. And sure, you're welcome to print it out and put it on your wall.

  • @smalin thank you very much ;)

  • @smalin

how am I able to print such scores?

should I make them myself and fotograph the screen, or is there a way of downloading the ones you made?

greetings, and thank you so much for making these awesome videos!

  • @1Silvus1 Yes, you will have to make them yourself and do a screen shot.

  • Why Can't i hear the"om"-inponeth reigneht?? is'om' in 1/8 note?

  • @MultiPogi It is a relatively short note, yes.

  • @MultiPogi it is an eighth note. the general custom is to emphasize 'ni' in omnipotent. God-om-NI-po-tent

  • @archeryguy1121 Thanks :)

  • Having sung this years ago, and wanting to sing it every year in a group, this is incredible! I know it's computerized but for pete's sake this is coooooool! This allows people to SEE music and I, for one am glad that you've done this. Hallelujah to you!

  • Arguably the greatest work ever written

  • @juetto Meh.. this is one of the few movements of the Messiah that can be considered a masterpiece.

  • outstanding. wonderful to see all of the parts in this way. makes you wonder what handel could envision in his mind, before he could actually hear it!

  • @ateniense7 it's done via software.... doesn't mean it's not really neat doe :D

  • Peggle :D

  • And He shall regin for ever and ever!!! Beautiful, beautiful song. Love it!

  • this is so beautiful brings me to tears every time i here it

  • @gandauf2001 same here! So inspiring and inspired!

  • Beyond Gorgeous! Merry Christmas everyone! Jesus is the Reason for the Season!

  • @TheSupernova247

    Yes, in deed

  • Happy birthday to a dear friend....

  • We just sang this last night at our Christmas concertt!! All the allumni came up and sang too(: it was greatt

  • I feel like standing at my computer desk....

  • thank you for doing this...now do and the glory of the lord :D

  • first violin is light green, correct?

  • MERRY CHRISTMAS TO THE WORLD

    only 18 DAYS TO GO

  • @annonimuz2 Thank you and same to you!! > :-)

  • smalin - Thank you for another wonderful portrayal of this fabulous piece! I've 'favorited" several of your efforts - the visual component really adds to the enjoyment and complexity. These composers were geniuses.

I returned here from a 'spontaneous' public performance in a Canadian shopping mall just this fall - posted on YouTube. Already has 12M hits!

  • Love how you can see the SATB lines then the men and women lines AMAZING job thanks

  • This is how I felt when I finally got rid of my last cheatin' bitch of a girlfriend! :)

  • Awesome!!

Now can you do the fourth movement of Beethoven's Ninth? :D

  • :D Yes!

We are doing this in choir<3

    I absolutely love this song!

  • thank you for this, i need it to practice for my choir spot check tomorrow. this really helps thanks :D the next thousand views you get are going to be from me.

  • I miss being in choir so much. We did this my senior year and rocked it. :D I love watching / listening to these, Smalin!

  • @Faylien64 omg me too i feel privileged tho have been in choir for our school and singing this at xmas time, we took the state championship 3 yrs in a row. I learned so much and had so much fun and i can still hold my part mezzo-soprano and sing along after soooo many years LOL :).

  • MAGNIFICENT!

  • I love the part when they say Hallelujah :D

did anyone else hear that too?

  • smalin, i freaking love you.

  • @iamkatiehearmerawrrr Aw, you're sweet.

  • This piece will always remind me of the Dumb&Dumber scene with all the hot babes in Bikinis at the end of the movie.

    Thank you Handel. =)

  • I don't understand all the words either but I was able to pick out the following phrases

    Hallelujah

The kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ and of His Christ

And He shall reign forever and ever

King of kings and Lord of Lords

  • @bejjinks thats about it too with all the repetition. Not that much of text to remember.

  • @bejjinks you need to check out the lyrics, theyre powerful

  • Of the increase of His government and peace, there will be no end!! The universe is pretty big!

  • Halle-luja

  • Realmente maravilloso!!!

  • I think it is fantastic that you do all this work and then put them on youtube for everyone else to enjoy. Thanks.

  • OK, everybody, let's all STAND UP. I love this song, to listen to and to sing. :-)

  • keep the classics real ! :-) Nice !

  • a bit too slow

  • @dragonth2019 That's funny ... I sped up the recording ... you should've heard it before ...

  • @dragonth2019 i was actually thinking that the other versions i've heard on youtube sped through the song waaay too fast. This is just about right.

  • @dragonth2019 Non-sense, it's almost too fast to retain it's splendor.

  • @dragonth2019 yah i was just listening to the one before and it was a LOT slower... ha this is better..... and a pretty good temp i think....

  • what a great new piece. I can see this becoming very popular

  • @Festizzle it's not new, great yes, and it IS very popular ;)

  • @Festizzle my word you dumb! it's like 400 years old!

  • 모든 .... 나의 끔찍한 후에 굴복 당했던 NACI 어제 .... 02/09/2010_25/12/290055

  • hey, he's got a hit!

  • I just noticed, but there are no drums in this performance. Would adding the drums make it more difficult to create a bar-graph score?

  • hallelujah!

  • What is/are the very fuzzy white at the bottom?

  • @michaelrh2008 Timpani.

  • @smalin What's Timpani?

  • @garyremindable101 Timpani (also known as kettledrums) are musical instruments in the percussion family. A type of drum, they consist of a skin called a head stretched over a large bowl traditionally made of copper, and more recently, constructed of more lightweight fiberglass. They are played by striking the head with a specialized drum stick called a timpani stick or timpani mallet.

  • Stephen Malinowski - are you pole?

  • This song is so beautiful it sends chills down my spine...

  • ugh, i hated the "King of kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiings, and Lord of Loooooooooooooooords" part that gets steadly higher...it sucks to sing that as a 2nd soprano

  • @tytykatzgrl sorry, I thought it was german, but now I know it's not. :P

  • Why is there always this ridiculous discussion about Händels nationality? It doesn't matter at all - he was born german and died british, but music doesn't have a nationality so please simply enjoy it!

  • @pieguyfry22 Yes, he was of German blood, but was an English citizen most of his life. And no, Messiah is in English.

  • Is it my imagination, or is there a warble in the soprano part at 2:54? I can't tell if it is somebody slightly out of tune, or recording distortion, or my lo-fi computer sound system.

In any case, thanks for posting! This is a great song, and a terrific one to see presented in this bar graph format.

  • the words are:

    - Hallelujah

    - For the lord god omnipotent reigneth

    - The kingdom of this world is become the kingdom our Lord and of his Christ and of his Christ

    - And he shall reign for ever and ever

    - King of kings - and Lord of lords

Of course it's totally mixed up.

  • This is my favorite of all the ones you post. I watch it everytime I come here. It is just so orderly and fun to follow because the song itself is so familiar. Im not sure it would be the same if it was in the blue and purple bubble form. The chorus itself is just so majestic and a crowd pleaser for sure.

thank you for your interest and work in sharing these.

  • BRAVO!!! **stands up and claps**

  • @pieguyfry22 Handel was German but most of his choral works are in English, since he spent the majority of his career in England.

  • @pieguyfry22 but yes, he was born in Halle, Germany

  • Awesome!

  • thank you smalin its so beautiful

  • oh... -.-" sorry, my mistake. I saw "Handel", so I assumed German.

  • I love this one. This and Toccata & Fugue in D Minor are my favorites so far. I'm learning music theory right now because I'm interested in composing music. The music is so much easier to understand when I can see it like this.

  • its like the sound graphic comunication in close encounters of the third kind

  • its too bad the singers of this song dont have the best diction ever. it is a great song but i cant even hear most of the word, other that hallelujah of course. but then it might just be youtube or my speakers...

  • The only important word is "hallelujah" ...

  • @smalin

If that were the only important word in the song, then it would be the only word in the song. Words are written for purpose, and that is to be heard and understood

  • @smalin What a stupid thing to say. All the words are important.

  • @smalin Awesome answer. You made my day.

  • @smalin lol

  • @ftbllmn102 "for the lord god omnipotent reigneth" its in english

  • @ftbllmn102

Maybe it's because I know the lyrics (and I can't avoid singing along every time I hear the piece), but I understand them perfectly.

  • i love this, its pretty cool! :)

  • lol wut? I;ve never seen anything like this

  • Fantastic !!!

    Best Regards

  • LOL.

I was listening to this on the 'Music for Studying' playlist, and it came on as I finished my last book for my exam.

And it just hit midnight when I finished (my target!) - the Angel of Revision is smiling upon me!

  • I don't care if it ain't Christmas, this is always a great listen!

  • Coole Videos

    Habe dich mal aboniert.

Würde mich freuen wenn Du dies auch bei mir tust.

  • WOOHOOO

  • btw this is awesome!

  • i had to play this in my ban ALL of it on piano i actually didnt mess up

  • I had to sing this in the school choir one Christmas... one of the best choral pieces.

  • Amazing.

One suggestion/question: is it possible to attach the lyrics to the video, as you did it in other videos? Of course, you would not put them during all the video- because they repeat a lot- but only a few times. It might make it even more interesting, in my opinion. Anyway, great work. Händel's and yours.

  • I was assuming that most people already knew the lyrics for this piece. I'll add them to the FAQ. I think they would clutter the video unnecessarily.

  • Oh, I see. Thank you.

  • Pretty awesome. Expanding on the depth of field was a good get. It definitely peaks my interest. It is nice to see painting and music so intertwined.

  • piques

  • Breathetaking!! =D I play music (guitar, piano... very bad the 2nd) without study and I don't know how to read a score sheet... and your videos are very "inspirationals" :) thanks!

  • WHOAAAHHH!!! This scrolling scroll thing is so cool!!!!

  • Je vous felicite! Merveilleux!

  • Bravo, smalin, and thanks for your efforts.

    Absolutely enchanting.

    ;-)

  • i luv wt u do with piano on utube bt i really liked the fur elise song! im playing it 2 bt it sounds nothing like me! great job keep scoring for ur goal!

  • horribly I like Handel too

  • awesome

  • *stands up*

  • VERY NICE! :)

  • the grey timpani (is that what instrument it is?) hurts my eyes... besides that, excellent video.

  • Thanks, Rowan! I hope to continue helping you (and others).

  • wonderful... my thanks to both stephen and george... marvelous and beautiful...min

  • Thanke you for the message of this song.Merry Christmans.

  • Maybe you could give the colors according to the group of instruments : one color for brass, one for string, one for strings, and of course keep the heights (sorry for my English).

  • That is in fact what I have done; see the FAQ.

  • I agree ; I wanted to suggest the color should be the same than in reality. The structure is OK but maybe symbolically it could be changed ?

  • Do you mean *exactly* the same?

So that you can't tell the difference between violin and 'cello?

  • Hello ! Yes I meant exactly the same if possible. The difference between violon and cello becomesonly the high. A violin is a small cello (or the contrary I don't remember :-) The same for the voices so the paramaters are isolated. Happy New Decade, dear Stephen !
