Both are hard sports. Boxing might be harder than MMA. You have to match up with somebody in the same style of fighting. MMA fighters are good at what they do, but they probably wouldn't go far if they had to compete with other fighters in their sport. If it was only wrestling, jiu-jitsu, etc. it would be hard for them. MMA is popular because most people think that's how real fights are. The problem is most people really don't know how to fight. Yep, Pride is dead... but you can't rule out the fact that if it wasn't for all the Pride fighters, UFC wouldn't be where it is now.

When Pride was sold to the Fertita brothers the person in charge of Pride was under the impression that Pride would continue on as a separate entity to the UFC, apparently that was not the case. As soon as the transaction was done ZUFFA shut Pride down, taking out UFC's biggest competitor.

Pride was coming into the western countries, but their airtime got cancelled because of suspicion of links to the yakuza. This created a lot of problems for them financially. Hence the sale.
