Anytime I hear people sing the song for tebow I think of this because it's the same tune. Ehy would they choose the evil guards song from wizard of oz?
if you didn't know it, the soldierrs were U.S. Marines from 29 Palms California. All of them were deployed to the pacific during WWII and only one survived the war.
I searched for this video, cause I needed to see the origins of metallica's frayed ends of sanity intro and I'm not impressed. metallica's version is way better.
I love this part but it's kind of odd. They are marching and chanting similar to the K.K.K. and their uniforms are inspired from Indian military dress uniforms from hundreds of years ago.
I remember my brother telling me how they showed this movie in class and one of the kids called out "It's the KKK!!!" when the guards were shown guarding the castle.
I watched this movie every year until I was 19. This was one of my favorite parts. My favorite one was when they went to see the wizard the first time.
@leegeorgeson they are probably Glaives from their structure of the spikes being in the back instead of the front of the blade. Though I don't know the specific name for them.
I looked up the original script online and I discovered that the Winkie Guard chant is actually "Ooo - eeeee - hoo! Yooo - ho! Ooo - eeeee - hoo! Yooo - ho!" What does it mean? No idea!
you can see where the edits took place when the scenes jump from the group to the witch and the guards. somewhere out there.. there is the two hour version called the POMOmA SCREeNING PREVIEW
Even as an adult I still love watching this. It used to come on every March . To think that this had the misfortune of debuting the same year as Gone with the Wind
When I was a kid, they did not have DVDs or VCRs. I can remember the first time that I saw it in color. I was 12 years old. I did not realize that the scarecrow was quoting the phythareom therom because I did not learn it until I was in the 10th grade. Now, that is a question that they would have on "Are you Smarter Than a 5th Grader".
I loved this movie and watched it ever year until I was 19. I used to always come on around Easter time in the '70s,
My father didn't have a sense of humor, but to my dying day, I will always remember how he laughed his head off when he saw the cowardly lion's tail wag through the soldier's uniform. Every year, around Christmas I could depend on the Wizard of Oz and that terrific scene to get a big laugh out of my dad.
They got it all wrong . avatar is not the greatest achievement in movie history , The Wizard of Oz is . Notice how I did not upper case avatar but I did for The Wizard of Oz . It has no place with this movie .
After seeing the Broadway musical Wicked, I have trouble watching this movie in the same way I did when I was a kid. Mostly because in the back of my mind I keep on thinking, (SPOILER) "the Scarecrow slept with the Witch, the Scarecrow slept with the Witch, the Scarecrow slept with the Witch"... yeah...
@KnightWolf214: But that's only the musical...or is it? I mean, it was said that the Scarecrow running the Emerald City was different than Dorothy's traveling companion, with the idea that every scarecrow looks alike to both humans & animals (and Animals) alike. Ditto for Elphaba literally melting in the novel. Even despite that, there was this tagline near the end about how the witch seemingly died, yet could come back at a given time (to which she did in the sequel, as her son's baby).
Glad there are others that think there are real words. I thought it was "all we are, we are" The men are singing throaty. Probably right there are no words..maybe a letter to a museum would answer the question once and for all.
@GrandmaTuffits nope, it's deliberate. also search for "west side story - america", you'll find that song familiar too. they also start every concert with "ecstacy of gold" from "the good the bad and the ugly"... they like movies.
Scared the shit out of me too. I had horrible, abusive piano teacher at this time and she rode a bike just like the Wicked Witch. I'm 54 and I'm still traumatized by her.
I first thought the words were, "All we own, we owe her." but it turns out there are no words to it at all! The chant just goes, "O-Ee-Yah! Eoh-Ah!". Weird, huh?
Oh, I'd so rather be a Winkie than a Munchkin. They rawked. The *original* Imperial Stormtroopers.
And the Witch had it all: The best castle. The best army. The best theme song. The hour-glass. The tall pointy hat. The broom. The winged monkeys. And, almost, and rightfully, the ruby slippers.
She only *lost* because the damned author / screenwriters were on the other side. Dorothy. Pft. That noob.
Thank you for posting part of an amazing movie without doing a stupid, unfunny and immature voice over with it. Too many people keep doing that and its pissing people off! So thank you again for this awesome clip :) xoxoxoxo
