I remember watching this. I was like about 8 years old and this was one of those time when you just knew Janelle was going to win. It didn't occur to me back then the significance of her victory and for some strange reason, back then, I thought she was from South Africa (oh the irony!).

ever Miss Universe. The first black Miss USA was Carole Gist, 1990, who represented Michigan (was 1st runnerup at Miss Universe 1990). Kenya was the second black woman to win the Miss USA crown in 1993. Kenya was fourth runnerup at the Miss Universe pageant. Do not confuse Miss USA pageant with the Miss America Pageant. Anyway Miss Commisiong is a radient and beautiful person and though was a year old when she won do remember it proud for my country though do not bank of returning there anytime soon.

I think that Anne Marie Braafheid should have won in Miss Universe 1968. But Janelle brought Justice. The world wasn't ready for a black queen in 1968, they had to sacrifice Martin Luther King first to realize that it's not about the colour of the skin, but it's all about being a Human being.

The most impacting fact for me is to several of the representatives of other countries celebrating when she is announced the winner. The end is one of the most emotive congratulations crowds ever seen at MU.

Did you know that she was the first black or "coloured" person to win this pageant? It was not only a victory for her and Trinidad & Tobago but for all of the Caribbean and coloured people everywhere. I am from Trinidad and I can tell you she still is beatiful and graceful to this day. Same smile.
