  • I love your rats!!! They're so cute!!!

  • Good job! I taught my one girl spin but when I try to teach her a new trick she just gets confused.

  • @AwsomeFaceFilms Thanks! I found the clicker helpful in helping them understand new things, and added voice commands later :)

  • how do u teach it not to take a poop on the floor but it own cage?

  • @teamdelta101 I just put them back in the cage when they pooed outside, or in my hand. They picked it up pretty quick. *shrug*

  • i cat teach my rat to do anthing he is a snake food rescue just basic black and white hooded .he is super sweet and i can tell he is smart

  • how long do rats live

  • @gamer368 About 2-3 years, average.

  • Absolutely adorable! Good job!

  • lol "up, Up... Give me a better one"

  • Among the things I see in my nightmares are rats and snakes.

  • do rats respond to verbal commands once the trick is learned like a dog? and if so how do you incorporate verbal commands in the training process?

  • @792112509

Absolutely! Voice commands is how I got them to distinguish between different commands (though sometimes hand movements probably played a part in it). Once they learn the behavior completely (I use clicker training/shaping), I start saying the name of the trick after they do it, and click. Once they're pretty good at doing it consistently, I start saying it before they do it, and click after they do it. Eventually, they get the association :)

  • @dragonofdiamonds woohooo!!! thank you so much! what intelligent little creatures! they don't get the reputation they deserve =-)

  • OMG so cute *__*

  • Is the berkshire rat's name Sardines? I don't know if I heard it correctly, I thought it was very cute. Nice rats, I'm going to get two bucks soon, and I wanted to train them also. :)

  • @BlackVolchitsa, Yeah, you heard right, her name is Sardines :) Thanks! Good luck training your new ratties :)

  • @dragonofdiamonds Thanks :)

  • haha they stashed the treats behind your pillows :)

  • How can i make my rat not to run away when i want to pick it up?

  • what the hell

  • what do u feed them as treats??

  • wow, so u just use a clicker? i need 2 try that if i get one!

    :]

  • all the people i know that own rats are hot women, whats with that?

  • lol i am getting a rat tommorow and and i am going to teach him tricks i am going to name him jack

  • we named our dog that, so we decided on Oliver for ours. lol

    That's awesome!

  • Thank you :) I clicker trained my rats...to film it I just set my camera on a stack of books on my chair and recorded ;)

  • i love my rat

  • OMG SHE SOOO CUTE !!!

  • Thanks :)

  • rofl you named your rat sardines? (cant really comment since mine are Paco and Jaime)

  • thats cool mines called han and chewie, my 1st was called splinter but she died :(

  • thats awesome, but then i am a big star wars guy. Where do you get a clicker?

  • clicker?

  • You can find a clicker at most any pet store. Just look in the dog section. I got mine at Petsmart :)

  • That's awesome! I've got five white does at home, and I'm wondering, how on EARTH did you teach them that?! My girls are extremely smart, to the point where I come home, and their cage is open and they are lounging on my bed. But I never knew how to go about teaching them a trick.... any tips?

  • Thanks :) I recommend clicker training, personally! This particular trick I just gave them food when they stood up, once they were good with that then started saying "up," and when they stood up after I said that I would give them food. However, if you check out my other video "rat tricks 2" you can maybe sift through some of the comments I've left about clicker training :) It's awesome, and I highly recommend it! Good luck with your five :)

  • Yeah, totally XD I always had to check behind my pillow before I went to be or I'd wake up with pieces of food in my hair XD

  • your black rat is so stashing the food you give him behind the teddy lol I love when they do that it shows they are not stupid and they know if there's a lot of food on the go you get more the quicker you come back haha

  • aww i wish my rat knew how to do tricks...she's a little ditsy heehee

  • what are you feeding them?

  • The Mazuri rat block food.

  • Oh, in the video I'm feeding them Vitakraft rat food. One piece of that is like a treat :)

  • Wow. What I did teach my old Ben in 1998. He did sit up and down too. cute babies

  • Aww, that's great that you taught him tricks ^^

    Thanks :)

  • Very nice!!

How long did you about to learn this to your cute rats???

  • Thanks! It took about two weeks or so I think, to get here. Short attention spans ;)

  • you have gorgeous rats ^_^ i have 5 myself :P (2 bald ones one brown one like you and two baby mixed colored ones)

  • Thanks :) That's quite a rattery you have!

  • I Got a Rat About A Week Ago Now, Is There other Ways you can get her use to me touching her and picking her cause at the moment she just wants to keep legging it from me and shes fast lol shes only about 10-12 weeks old so any tips cheers

  • I would suggest just resting your hand in her cage and letting her get used to your scent and hand. Try feeding her tasty treats by hand too, that helps. If you can get her easily out of her cage and hold her for a few minutes that will help too, until she gets more used to you. Give her treats when you put her back in the cage and she will associate coming out with good things. Good luck :)

  • Thanks For The Advice Much Appreciated

  • Wow! How in the world did you teach them that? Could you post a video on how you did it??? :) I'll be getting ratties too in September, yay! :)

  • I used clicker training :) You can read some other replies I've left on this vid or my other Rat Tricks about some specifics if you want. Good luck with your rats!

  • Why Do they go behind the pillow

  • They either eat their food behind them (they like the cover) ...or they just store it there (They like to hoard) XD

  • that is soo sweet the way they bounce back behind the pillows x

  • lol, yeah, they're a little special ;D Thanks for commenting!

  • That was cool o.O

  • Thanks :)

  • how do you teach them to be cage trained and the commands?

  • I put them back in their cage if they used the bathroom outside of it when I first got them. They just got the picture I guess. I trained them using a clicker to do tricks :)

  • very cute but dont they leave little presents on your bed? I loved my rats but they kept breeding too much

  • Thanks. No, they're cage-trained, so no "presents" outside the cage ;)

  • Rats can actually be litter trained...both of mine are and they don't poop anywhere other than their litter box.

  • Mine were quite good; they always manages to poop on the saw dust in their cage (where as the rest was wooden platforms + larger shavings)

but sure as eggs are eggs theyd poop as soon as you lifted them (or a guest did)

    very sweet

  • cute :) I have only managed to teach my rats their names, down, and to come when I make a kissy sound... I want to maybe teach them some other stuff but I'm not sure what yet.

  • Thanks! Sounds like you're already building a nice trick basis :D I usually get new trick ideas from things they do naturally :)

  • Your rats are so cute!(:

  • Thanks :)

  • Hooded rats in general are the cutest i reckon ;)

  • hey, I've got a mouse and i was wondering if it was possible 2 teach her how 2 stand on command.........

also, if u have any other tricks, or if u just wanna talk, come visit my site.....

  • I don't have any experience with mice, but you can certainly give it a whirl!

If you are interested in some of the other things my rats have learned, feel free to check out the other videos I've posted to this channel :)

  • i think rat's minds work different then a mouse's. that's why people test drugs on rats and not mice

  • Great rats! I wish my boys could do that...lol they are too crazy

  • Thanks ^^

  • Aww!!! So Cute!! Nice job! Thanks for sharing!

  • Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it :)

  • Aw, the black one is so cute. The other one looks like my Lily. This is the only trick I've managed to teach mine so far, but they forget it occasionally, just as they forget their long hours of socialization and opt to scurry about and do other more important ratty investigations, Supposedly you can advance this trick and teach them to walk on their back legs by holding the treat out farther.

  • Thanks :) I tried a brief stint trying to get them to walk on their hind legs, but they really didn't want to :P I think some rats are more apt to learning certain things, which is part of the reason my rats have their own set of trick (another part is it being more interesting to teach a different trick rather than the same twice ;) )

  • One thing I found is it's good to teach them tricks that correspond with their talents. I have one rat that's good with walking and tightropes nd one thats good with fetching things. You're just rewarding what they do naturally.

  • Exactly! : D

  • it is fun to play with it?

  • Pet rats are the ultimate. They're super smart and cleaner than you'd think.

  • Aww! I love the name Tundra!!

  • Thank you :)

  • I love the way they bugger off as soon as they get their reward, now THATS smart.

  • Lol, yeah. What they do is horde it behind my bed, or under my pillows, so they can come back to it later...or I wake up with seeds in my hair in the morning XD

  • WOW that was awsome i did not no rats where that smart

  • Thanks :)

  • Brilliant job! That is so cute. I just got a rat yesterday... she's friendly but a little timid. I'm not sure how old she is but she's only small so I guess she's young.

  • Thanks :) I'm sure she'll be a little less timid the longer you have her ^^

  • wow! great job teaching them ^.^ they are too cute!

  • Thank you :)

  • hi i got my rat a few days ago his name is diesel and he is a hooded rat we both thought that was cute

  • Thanks :)

  • I love your rats! Their so cute! What are their names? I just got 2 rats for Christmas along with a nice cage... I just lack a exercise wheel, which sucks because I need one!

  • Thanks! They're Sardines and Tundra :) I wouldn't worry about the exercise wheel. You'd need to find a really large, rat-specific one, anyways (if it's not the right kind their tails could get caught). If you let them run around outside their cage, or put them in one of those big plastic balls to run around, they'll get enough exercise :)

  • Mine only used their wheel to sleep in - and it was a big expensive one (designed to protect their feet and tails when they ran). We ended up taking it out as it got gunky and stinky - plus it took up room. Some rats love the wheel, none of mine ever did (except when they were really young).

  • Hiya! You seem really clever with rat things! Can you give some advise? I have a rat his name is Andy and he refuses to be tamed. Any suggestions?

  • Just make sure you handle him everyday. If you can't seem to get a hold of him, just stick your hand in the cage and try and pet him or let him sniff it; feed him treats by hand; just make him associate you with good things and that should help. The more you interact with your rat, the more friendly and outgoing he will be.

  • I've been doing all those things every day for two months! Do you think he just doesn't like me? By the way he killed his brother Spike for no reason they loved echother groomed echother and cuddled echother! Why would he kill him?

  • I'm sorry, I'm not sure exactly why he hasn't opened up or why he apparently killed his cage mate. Perhaps you should take him to a vet or some other sort of expert, like a behaviorist, to try and find out. They could probably give you better advice than me.

  • thats awesome! i just got my rats yesterday, the are my first,so im hoping i can teach them that well.

    :)

  • Thanks! Good luck with your rats!

  • Hey if you go on my channel my rat is doing tricks too! Please leave a comment and I know loads of things on rats too if you need any advise on training them loads of pretty neat stuff if you need any help! =3

  • what types of treats do you give them?

  • What I use as training food is Vitakraft rat food. It's a mixture of seeds and nuts. I also give them Vitakraft yogurt drops, but usually after I put them away.

  • k thanks, it seems they really enjoy those : ) Theyre so cute.

  • love ur rats ^__^

  • :-)

  • ur rats are some of the smartes on here!!! im getting a dumbo in december! (have you always had 2 @ once ) ive herd just one is bad news. ?

  • Thanks :D I'm glad you think so ^^ My first rat I actually had just by herself, but I later learned that its important for them to be with another rat, for social/mental developmental reasons...basically, they're happier that way :) Good luck with your new Dumbo!

  • Nicely done

  • Thanks!

  • aawh that's cute! well done for training them.. i'm still litter training lol! (i only started recently). very unique names 2, so did terry prachett inspire you to get rats?!

  • Thanks! No, I've had rats in the past, before I read that Terry Prachett book. That is where I got Sardines' name from though :)

  • That's fantastic :D

I'm looking after my friends rats while they're away. I didn't even realise you could interact with them on that level. I'm going to spend a lot more time playing with them now ;D

  • Thanks! Yeah, rats are almost like mini-dogs...really mini-dogs

  • How do you teach them to do that? I want to teach my rats lots of tricks!

  • I use clicker training. It works excellent! It takes a lot patience too, lol, rats have fairly short attention spans XD

  • really cute! :-)

....but i think the name sardines is odd :P

  • Thanks! I do get a lot of comments on the name, lol. It was actually the name of a rat in a book by Terry Pratchett.

  • this is such a cool video! Would you recommend rats for a busy teen? i would really like to get a rat or two but im not sure if its right for me. are they easy to take care of or high maitnence? they sound awesome and fun!

  • Rats are great pets but they do require a fair amount of attention if you want happy rats. also the maitnence is quite minimal.

  • Thanks! Yes, I would say I live a fairly busy life in college. I'm only ever home in the evenings, but they're usually the most active then anyway. I usually take them out for a half-hour to 45 mins each day. Some days I'm really busy, and it's less, other days, it's more. I would say they're fairly low maintenance though. :)

  • The epic rats.

  • I love them! So cute! Kiss those ratties for me!

  • Thanks! Heh heh, that won't be a problem :D

  • yup i remember those old times, the rats would never eat the treats right there. They always take them back to there house and collect as many as possible, then eat them later :'). Cool trick btw

  • Thanks! Glad you liked it :)

  • sweet

  • Thank you :)

  • SO CUTEEE

  • Thanks!

  • LOL! AWESOME! XD

  • Heh heh, thanks!

  • Wow, your rats are smart. I've had allot of rats but never managed to train them to do anything. Even respond to being called. I love the way they grab the treat and then gallop away to hide and eat it at full speed. :P

  • That was so cute! I decided to teach my Sucre some tricks, but I cant find any snacks she would go crazy for. Sucre just bites a piece of something and drops it. Ive tried sweets, but what if she gets sick? When I tried nuts or fruit shes like: eat it yourself:)

  • Lol...well, since I feed mine primarily rat blocks (Mazuri), they find the mixed grain type food (I use the Vitakraft blend) excellent bite sized treats :) Have you tried yogurt drops (Again, I use Vitakraft, but other companies make them too)? They're definitely treat food, and I have yet to find a rat that doesn't absolutely adore them. They're a little big, so if you use those, you could always break them into smaller pieces.

  • hey good trick, i train my rats all sorts and this is a good one to start with you can get hem to twirl as well, but to stop them running off to eat there treat you shud break it up into smaller rattie bite size pieces but don't just leave it at that keep trying with new tricks theres no end to what you can teach then they can pretty much learn anything a dog can (including fetch, rollover, sit, lay down, stay, etc.) good work and keep trying

  • Thanks, I've already got them to do many more tricks, including spin around (you can see in some of my other videos) but this was the first one I taught them. I do only give them tiny bits, but they like to hoard things, or run behind the pillows to eat it, even if its a small piece ;)

  • lol i lvoe it wen they run!!

    they bound!^^ its cute

  • lol, thanks :D That's their "really excited run" ^^

  • I have two males the exact same colors as yours. :3 Vegas, black with a bit of white on his chest (Two perfectly shaped hearts actually), and Ozzy, a hooded. The same cream color. The stripe down his back isn't solid though, can't tell if yours is. Anyway.. :D Just thought that was cool. Mine come to their individual names. And if I want them both to come at once, I whistle. I know a man who owns a pet show with rats in it. They do amazing tricks. Such intelligent creatures!

  • lol, that's cool! Tundra's stripe isn't completely solid, there's one break in it. They really are smart little critters! I think if I wanted both of mine to come at the same time, I'd just have to crinkle their treat bag, heh heh ;)

  • hey what food are you using for the treats?

cos my rats arnt really interested in food....

    they eat....

but they dont really care about food...

  • The training food I use is a Vitakraft blend of nuts and grains. I also give them yogurt drops when they go back in their cage, and they LOVE those. Their normal food is Mazuri rat blocks, so the mixed variety food makes a good treat/training food.

  • Awesome. I have two rats at my self. Two girls, Emelie and Stacy. But I have not learned them tricks, they are pretty lasy :)

  • Cool! Yeah, I've had some lazy rats in the past too XD These guys get lazy too though, lol, they just need to be in the right mood to get a really good training session going :)

  • wow, so awesome. i hope i can get my rat to do this too :)

  • Good luck! I'm sure you can ^^

  • ADORABLE!!

  • Thanks :)

  • wooow asshole

    cute tricks :]

  • It was obviously a joke you douches. Who in hell would eat a rat burger?

    Wow indeed....wow indeed.

  • Thats awesome My rat only knows her name so far. She's very hard-headed...lol Great job though.

  • Thanks! Learning their name is important though, so that's good ^^

  • very cute rats! im still tring to train one of mine.

  • Thanks :) Good luck with yours ^^

  • OH WOW!! They know their names and can get up only when their name is called! nice!

  • Thanks! I appreciate the comment ^^

  • wow that's so cool XD they are cute too!

did you toilet train them as well?

hey i got a question for you...is it true that rats get sick often while its mouse counterpart doesn't? i heard like rats get tumours when they're around 2-year-old?

  • Thanks :) They do not use the bathroom outside their cage, and they use the litter box in their cage about 60% of the time, heh XD

Females rats are prone to getting tumors at around that age, yes, especially if they are not spayed. Spaying rats can be expensive, but it will greatly lower the possibility of tumors. I don't know how this compares to mice, personally, but I don't know why rats would get sick more or less often than rats. I suppose it could depend on breeding.

  • awsom, my rat so far can just come when i call her, but im teaching her to get up like yours... i love you rats... there soo cute

  • Thanks! I appreciate the kind words :) Learning their names is an important first step ^^ Good luck with training ;)

  • That's so cute!! I love how they run back for more :)

  • Thanks! Heh, heh, they're highly food motivated ;)

  • Very nice! Your rats are cute. =P

  • Thanks :) I appreciate the comment ^^

  • i just got a baby rat and am teaching her some tricks. i like your video.

  • Cool :) Thanks for the comment!

  • cool thanks man im gonna try this

  • Awesome! Hope it goes well :)
