I worked at the beach at 2 resorts since day one of the oil spill. I have been sick since the 1st week. i have had upper respiratory infection that 3 perscriptions of antibiotics and steroids have not cured. I have spent all my extra money on doctors and meds and bp asked me for 3 years w-2's plus a million more documents just to get help to see a specialist and pay for my medication. I was laid off work at the end of the season and now have no money coming in. How can we get help? Thanks BP

The static kill animation shows cement being injected into the area where the relief well intercept is planned. This seems to contradict the second part of the relief well intercept (where the interior of the casing is cemented), since the cement would already be placed there from the top. The animation also implies that the relief well operation will encounter reservoir oil/gas, managed with mud, etc. Is there a remote danger of another blowout that could be avoided by the static kill alone?
@jamiefayefenton Kent answered this question in a later briefing - the bottom kill is set up to intercept the annulus (or the area between the casing and the rock), which may still be connected to the reservoir. Even if it isn't, pumping in cement is a good idea as it reinforces the seal. Proceeding to the second phase (using the mill bit, etc.) may not have to be done as the interior of the casing is already sealed.

The cement that is used is a special variant of traditional Portland cement (one of the primary ingredients in concrete) that will cure even under water or in the presence of oil under high pressure. It looks like and has a similar consistency as mortar used for laying brick.
The oil leak has already been stopped you imbecile, by next week the static kill operation will be over and the problem will be solved permanently. Sure there has been a lot of oil that has leaked but in the context of the entire gulf it is nothing. The equivalent of 8 olympic swimming pools worth of oil has leaked, of this only 25% is still in the ocean. It is becoming apparent that the potential environmental effect was massively overstated, BP got screwed over by Obama.

WHY did the well head/manifold FAIL to do its job in the FIRST place? No one has asked OR answered this question. The reservoir pressure is about 10,000psi (they are monitoring it). Drillers use this type of static kill all of the time at higher pressures it is a standard operation. Once the mud fills the bore to the bottom, oil will not leak even if the BOP is completely removed. The tricky part is at the end, getting the cement to the right place and curing to strength.
BP makes me want to swallow my own tongue can I have some money now?

Pakistan and Indonesia (2004) did their own cleaning, without needing a "license." So why can't people clean up their own beaches in the USA? What's so bad about touching the oil? We BREATH it everyday, and all our fruits and vegetables are grown with nuclear fallout and pollutants, anyway, with no way of stopping it. So I can't stand in the rain without a license? What ever...

WHY did the well head/manifold FAIL to do its job in the FIRST place? No one has asked OR answered this question. I'm sure there was a KILL SWITCH to detatch and blow away the line running down to the well head, by which instantly stopping the high pressure flow coming from below, and stopping the fire above. Makes sense to me. At any rate, we are all guilty of the spill, because we all pine for oil and it's subproducts. Everyone should be cleaning... Look at Pakistan's flood! more...

why are they trying to plug it up and cause more pressure o the pipe they should just try to take all the oil out with the relief well that would stop the oil spilling i mean all they care about is their money anyways. and btw how do they figure the cement will not harden when they are pumping it but when it gets to the bottom of the pipe it will harden all of a sudden?

You just contradicted yourself. You claim all they care about is money and wonder why they are sealing ( killing ) the well for good, which means they will not recover anymore oil from this location.
I would think if they just wanted to make more money they would utilize the relief wells to recover more oil, but they aren't they are using them to seal it.
Also did you listen to what the procedure is all about, they impact the well with mud first, then concrete

The USA needs oil.
It does not want to rely upon other countries.
The only local source of new oil is in the Gulf of Mexico.
Getting it out is expensive and risky.
BP (and many others) spend the money and take the risk and if successful earn profits, if not make losses.
On this occasion, this risky procedure went wrong and so they are paying up and making significant losses.
This is free enterprise; this is "the American way"
BP accept this, why can't those who use the oil accept this?

When the USA's population, which is around 5% of the world's total, stops burning 25% of the worlds oil, then they can complain about pollution and destruction of the planet. Prominent Geologists including John Kessler of Texan A&M, David Valentine of USC, Gregory Ryskin of Northwestern, Chris Landau and many more oceanographers and geologists suggest that a Methane Gas deposit with pressures reaching 100,000 psi is VERY near this well. Mr Wells this does nothing about the tons of Chemical displacent that is far more toxic than the oil itself pumped by BP. The reservoir pressure is about 10,000psi (they are monitoring it). Drillers use this type of static kill all of the time at higher pressures it is a standard operation. Once the mud fills the bore to the bottom, oil will not leak even if the BOP is completely removed. The tricky part is at the end, getting the cement to the right place and curing to strength.
