Oil companies decide the price of gas. If we temporarily eliminate the gas tax and make them pay it instead, they can, and will, just raise the price of gas to compensate. In the mean time, 10s of billions of tax dollars that would normally go to fixing roads and paying gov. employees would simply disappear. And to top it off, when the holiday is over, do you think the oil companies are going to lower prices back to where they are now? No, they will just keep them at their new higher prices.

It's pretty weird to see how ~8/10 of the hits for "high gas prices" on google pertain to the US, even when average costs in canada are around $4.10us/gal and those in europe are around $7-$8/gallon. In fact, we have the lowest first-world fuel costs in the world.

The only thing they could really do is Cut spending. Less spending would help the value of the dollar a bit, and prices would go down a little. They can try little things like a gas holiday but at the core of it is the Federal reserver policies, which as far as I know Congress doesn't really handle.
slate, good point. yah a lot of the big rise in oil prices is the decline in value of our dollar. If the international price of oil doubles and our dollar declines to half its former value, we pay 4 times as much as we were! No more debt spending, no more new programs until the budget's balanced.
Someone on the news was saying something like if the dollar had retained its value relative to other currencies, oil would be 70ish dollars a barrel for us, not 120.

Can't find numbers for what we could get from oil fields off California and Florida, where we aren't allowed by the govt to drill.
By artificially restricting supply in those ways, while demand soars, liberals are responsible in part for your higher gas prices. Liberals are for better efficiency in cars and other types of fuels which would help with the price, but that's half a solution. The fastest way to drop gas prices is to make cars more efficient and have more that don't run on gas while simultaneously drilling for more oil and building refineries. Less demand plus greater supply = lower prices now.
Meathead, if Congress says only 1 million Nintendo Wiis can be sold this year, limiting supply, the price for Wiis will go up to 400, 600, 1000 dollars per unit. With more buyers than products to be sold, the price can be jacked up. Similarly, when the supply of oil is restricted, while demand especially from Asia continues to increase, the price will keep rising. We should drill for our own oil now, being enviro friendly, but doing it.

How about this; the drilling ban from congress will have to be voted on again come September and I bet that it is reversed due to anger on both political sides. Sooner or later our elected officials will have to put party differences aside and make it reasonable for the American man to drive to work everyday. Drilling is not a long term solution, but if it drops the oil price until a better solution can come about, why not?

Oil companies decide the price of gas. If we temporarily eliminate the gas tax and make them pay it instead, they can, and will, just raise the price of gas to compensate. In the mean time, 10s of billions of tax dollars that would normally go to fixing roads and paying gov. employees would simply disappear. And to top it off, when the holiday is over, do you think the oil companies are going to lower prices back to where they are now? No, they will just keep them at their new higher prices.

That's going to change anyways because of the limited supply of oil; we can't just keep using oil at the current rate and expect the price to stay constant. "Doing something" to lower the prices isn't going to change a thing (except to use less oil, of course). Anyways Europe has the advantage, not America, because its transit and rail systems are much more built out and they use much less oil per capita than we do, meaning when crude costs $500 their economies won't be as effected.

The constitution already provides checks and balances, the two parts of Congress against each other, the Congress against the President, the President against the Congress, and in very extreme cases only, the Supreme Court against the Congress and President. We have a good system, the filibuster ruins it, by allowing the party voted out of power to block the will of the party voted into power by the people. The only thing they could really do is Cut spending. Less spending would help the value of the dollar a bit, and prices would go down a little. They can try little things like a gas holiday but at the core of it is the Federal reserver policies, which as far as I know Congress doesn't really handle.

slate, good point. yah a lot of the big rise in oil prices is the decline in value of our dollar. If the international price of oil doubles and our dollar declines to half its former value, we pay 4 times as much as we were! No more debt spending, no more new programs until the budget's balanced.
Someone on the news was saying something like if the dollar had retained its value relative to other currencies, oil would be 70ish dollars a barrel for us, not 120.

I withdraw "half our need maybe more" claim. I can only find that Anwar alone would be 5% or more of our daily need plus whatever we could get off our coasts which is not currently alllowed. Can't find numbers for what we could get from oil fields off California and Florida, where we aren't allowed by the govt to drill.

By artificially restricting supply in those ways, while demand soars, liberals are responsible in part for your higher gas prices. Liberals are for better efficiency in cars and other types of fuels which would help with the price, but that's half a solution. The fastest way to drop gas prices is to make cars more efficient and have more that don't run on gas while simultaneously drilling for more oil and building refineries. Less demand plus greater supply = lower prices now.

Meathead, if Congress says only 1 million Nintendo Wiis can be sold this year, limiting supply, the price for Wiis will go up to 400, 600, 1000 dollars per unit. With more buyers than products to be sold, the price can be jacked up. Similarly, when the supply of oil is restricted, while demand especially from Asia continues to increase, the price will keep rising. We should drill for our own oil now, being enviro friendly, but doing it.

Liberals are responsible for your higher gas prices in the following ways: they artificially restrict the supply of oil by blocking drilling in Anwar, and off both Coasts. They artificially restrict the supply of gas by blocking new refineries to change oil in gas or making it too expensive and over-regulated to build a new one...California won't allow a new refinery so their gas is shipped in from Texas and Louisiana, a long drive making Cali gas prices higher than other states.

meathead yes, it would. more supply of oil means lower price. Less supply of oil as China and India rapidly increase their demand of it, means higher and higher prices. If we increase oil production a little, prices will drop a little, if we increase a fair amount, prices will drop a fair amount. If we decreased our demand for oil through more efficient cars and alternative fuel cars, while increasing supply by drilling for more, prices would drop quickly.

The average profit margin on a gallon of gasoline is 8 cents a gallon.
So, when Exxon-Mobil made $40 billion...the feds took an extra 60 billion-plus out of our wallets.
