@therealdoron -I am pretty sure they are just controllers for the ARP 2600
modular Synths. Plus, Oberheim 8 -voice- and the Rhodes- I think that is it.
surprising JZ doesn't use a sequenced Synth line for the opening figure here, as he did in the studio. This is a pretty credible version, considering how produced
the recorded version is, and how many keyboard overdubs JZ did. I have always loved this tune- one of my faves- and dig Jaco's reDICKalus 16th note feel at 6.36! really inCREDible.
@therealdoron No, they weren't. MOST of what the band did after 1976 was bull. By their standards, anyway (as I said, WR is my all time favourite). You could maybe put together ONE good album using their songs from that time. Sadly...
GREAT HOLISTIC BANDS ARE--Gong, Mother Gong, Magma, Aphrodities Child, Steve Hillage, Steffi Sharpstrings, Eat Static, System 7, Steve Tibbetts, Jade Warrior, Sphongle, Lisa Gerrard, Dead Can Dance, Larry Coryell, Shakti, Oregon, Kazumi Watanabe, Egberto Gismonti, Jon Anderson and Kitaro, Ozric, Tentacles, Melting Euphoria, Patrick Bernard, Lost At Last, Stomu Yamashta, Bill Laswell.
Bang, 0:35, whoa...we off chasing 'dat gal. Lovin the ERSKIN layin down the wallop with Jaco. Ahhh 1:41, Joespi givin us the little teaser. 2:47 the Big Bang II. Oh god, take me back
Mr Gone is not strange, is arguably the worst WR album. Zawinul oppressive? It's definitely not for you, pollaponeros. He was the one who still tried to keep the band together, in their downward spiral after Heavy Weather (act. Black Market but HW was such fuckin success...)
To me it's the only, kind of, respectable song in this, really bsd, album. Sorry, Weather Report is my ALL TIME FAVOURITE band, and maybe that's why I was so dissapoined when I first heard it. And now... THIS song is quite OK, I'd say...
awesome

probably one of the all time best groups I've seen perform. Probably too much to ask for a reunion tour..
shafterdave 10 months ago
@shafterdave yeah since probably two of their most important members are dead and the other one being 78 years old.

1975 Playboy Jazz & Pop Poll -- Album of the Year... when awards meant something. Joe and Jaco -- two all time music greats. R.I.P.

Jaco joined WR in 1976. But you're right, 75, with Tail Spinnin, marked the end of their arguably best time. Mysterious Traveller,
Sweetnighter... Take me back!

"Mr. Gone" is a strange album.
Zawinul is the protagonist with his keyboard, and his sound can be quite oppressive.
Anyway, tracks like "Young and fine", "The Elders", "Mr. Gone" and "And then" are very good pieces, very original and very well framed.

@PrZemek44 WHAAAAT ?!?! the "worst" WR? Heresy ! A load of Horse-poo!!
It was certainly the biggest departure, stylistically, and went into some funk &
(near)- disco areas.. but I don't think WR was capable of a worst record. They are
all valuable in some way. Plus, any record with THIS tune, Pinocchio & Punk Jazz
can't be that bad.I know Downbeat slammed it in '78- but they were wrong, too.

i agree with prz44, but add these comments.
respectable -- ALL TIME FAVORITE? -- MINE TOO! .
nothing they did was 'bad', but weather report made history in the world of jazz. of course, no music is for everyone, but these guys come close.
