  • REAL MUSIC.

  • epic!

  • In questo video Riccardo è pesto

  • London by William Blake

I wander thro’ each charter’d street,

Near where the charter’d Thames does flow,

And mark in every face I meet

Marks of weakness, marks of woe.

In every cry of every Man,

In every Infant’s cry of fear,

In every voice, in every ban,

    The mind-forg’d manacles I hear.

  • @MrCeej9999 That's crazy man i've been listening to this song for a while now and we just started studying William Blake at my school. I never imagined there would be a connection. Thanks for sharing the info.

  • Now for an English lesson, for all you crazy kids. This is the poem that the songs based on. Called London, by William Blake I wander thro’ each charter’d street, Near where the charter’d Thames does flow, And mark in every face I meet Marks of weakness, marks of woe. In every cry of every Man, In every Infant’s cry of fear, In every voice, in every ban, The mind-forg’d manacles I hear.

  • Richard had hair back then lol

  • Pure perfection!

  • my fav Verve song EVER...stunning on sooo many levels 10/10

  • why's there only 403 likes????

  • this song reminds me that life exist, and that music is life. It´s the talent of The verve, they remind us intense feelings do exist in the music. And music is the power of feelings

  • could this be there best? epic!

  • this song reminds me of when you breast feed and i humped your momma while you slept when i fell in love with my wife

  • and now this song is a part of my history...

  • william blake

  • this song so realisty

  • acid trip

  • one of the best. takes me back to my youth, doing too many things we shouldn't

  • best verve song....it's way better then bitter sweet symphony!!

  • this is classic..

  • Blake!(Beautiful melody to this one though!)!

  • yikes, his voice is awful here, and the melody is so boring.

  • @ransriggs WHAT?????????

  • powerfull song

  • why cant anyone give the appreciation that this song deserves??? no stupid stories just listen...

  • it's so not logical that they can be so fucking awsome. i honestly don't understand it.

    Amazing.

  • so impressed with ashcroft using william blakes poetry in such a deserving song, what a man.

  • blows me away everytime

  • Why the hell is there only 188,196 hits!!! fucking legendary song..

  • @whitewedge to right mate

  • Because it's you and me, we're history

  • my funeral song

  • @thomashattrick probably mine too.

  • Gets better and better with age, spellbinding.

  • They'd split up by the time this was released, Ashcroft on his own created the vidoe montage using clips from their previous videos and he did it really well.

Fast forward 13 years when Ashcroft just went over the heads of the other band members and directed the video for "Rather Be" featuring himself, on his own without consulting the other band members.

  • nothing needs to be said not enough superlatives in the english language

  • great song

  • easily my fave verve song

  • love the song, but with that pout he looks like scarlett johansen !

  • When The Verve were sufuckingperb!!!!

  • The video clip on the DVD This is Music is way better than this one!

  • God they were the soundtrack to a whole generation, absolutely fantastic band . . . . . the shiz ♥

  • thx for this

  • the history of this band is a future unwritten...

  • beautiful beautiful soundage!

  • sorry is it me or does it sound a bit like cast no shadow???

  • @Horandi29

Yes except this song predates cast no shadow..?

  • @muzzawelsh I don't think it does, Cast No Shadow was on What The Story Morning Glory which was 1994? This was released in 1995.

Noel Gallagher actually wrote Cast No Shadow for Richard Ashcroft, and in return Richard Ashcroft wrote the song A Northern Soul for Noel.

  • @Horandi29 no it was years before this song is for richard ashcroft!

  • Someone get me some acid.

  • MASSA!!!!

  • it touchs my soul, timeless song yes

  • Played at full volume, the strings at the beginning make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up - awesome song.

    The Verve - Class

  • Timeless classic so haunting

  • This is the best song written in the past 30 years.

  • One of the best songs ever written!

    Fuck what anyone else says.

  • @HitchHikersBlues ..I do believe your right .. still that intro haunts me ..

  • touching my heart is your music

  • willam blake

  • for my dear freind martin

  • this one is for my mate martin and the co operative - u get me xxx

  • I love it. Makes think of all the london streets like cally road and kilburn

  • such a great band- this song s a lil disapointing... :(

  • @danirox79 WTF this is one of there best songs, just amazing

  • Amazing band will love them forever!

  • I had the intro to this song stuck in my head for about a year. I finally knew that it wasn't from this song, but John Lennon's "Mind Games".

Either way, I love both songs.

  • @samsonbristol

The first time I heard the strings on this track, I thought it sounded like another song, and after ages wracking my wee monkey brain, I realised it was John Lennon's Mind Games.

  • like it more the sugar puff's

  • Such a sad, yet uplifting song...Energizing, but soothing...Honestly, absolutely love it!

  • Top 20 of all time.

    Personal.

    End.

  • there amazin btw seen them 3 times and ashcroft solo top notch band.....it looks like each of their videos is directed by david lynch so weird but awesome

  • I can't describe how much I love this song. What an underrated band and song. So soulful, so heartwrenching, yet so heart-warming... What a voice, what lyrics, what a voice...

  • so relaxing..........makes me wana learn yoga

  • one of my top 10 songs of all time truly beautiful

  • It just really beautiful...

  • stupid fuckin adverts , youtube stop bein greedy you tossers

  • I've read a bit about the history of opium, and some of the English poets' works that have been inspired by opium, and this song seems to me to be in the same sort of vein. opium and heroin are probably nice drugs when you start out, but from what I've read about opium history, it's a damn nasty habit when it gets you! When you first try it though, it's like..all psychedelic, even.

  • THE BOLLOCKS

  • sik tune!! Gregeridge

  • what a tune :)

  • One of my all time favourite songs.

  • Such An Underrated Band... I ♥ This (:

  • This song reminds me of coming home from an acid trip in grade 11 back in 95. Memories

  • @ErwicktheFigg ROFL

same here except I was drunk...I think you win lol

  • @ErwicktheFigg dude the song itself should be enough to get high!!

  • this song is incredible...have loved it since 10th grade...takes me to a place that nothing else can

  • where are you people comming from this does not sound nothing like mind games.

this(history )starts with a G chord, while mind games starts with c. this is the verv's finest song, ashcroft and the lads sing and play with soul

  • One of my very favourite tracks from my favourite album - although the album version of this is much better than this radio edited one. I agree that this does sound similar to the opening bars of Mind Games, but thats not a crime - ofcourse The Beatles never copied any other artists did they?!

  • Brilliant album...i LOVE it!!!!

  • William Blake - London

  • The poem? Similar structure!

  • Haunting... Blake deserves recognition for the beauty and hooror of the of transition to experience... Ashcroft seems to have worked it out by himself... magick

  • A Northern Soul is an underrated classic! This is one of those albums I could listen to over and over!

  • Totally agree

  • Good artist's borrow, Great artist's steal. This is a better version.

  • Sounds like Mind Games particularly at the beginning it's almost note for note. If this were Oasis they'd be ripped for copying The Beatles (or Lennon in this case)

  • hairs on end

    .........

  • Hey - one of their best

  • I want to suck his lips off at 28 seconds.

  • lol

  • In every face I meet reminds me of what I have run from....

  • is that a crime this life is mine..deserves a better video tho

  • One of my all time best Verve songs, Ashcroft at his best.

  • unbelivible song

  • Unfortunately the verve ae a bit irregular quality but when they were on top of their game they really maxed out what rock music can be about

  • forgot how class this song is. genius. they dont make bands like this anymore

  • whats the song were he's in a prison singing its really gd

  • break the night with colour. it was a solo song

  • I'm sorry for upsetting you man. i just don't like anything that oasis have ever produced. that's just one mans opinion. obviously they are a good band or else they would never have got to the point that they are at. but as i said i just don't like them. As for the roses! I think they are a brilliant band. Of course they are. They set the mold for the music we listen to today. But in my opinion, the verve are a better band. Again that's just my opinion. so again apologies for the upset....Peace!

  • masterpiece from Verve.

  • what a song and what a band!!!!

  • the verve piss all over the roses and oasis. this a serious band. oasis could never in the their wildest dreams write a song that comes even close to a bad verve song. oasis are a joke. 10 or 11 albums of pure shite and the verve have 3 absolute unbelievable albums and 1 dodgy 1.

  • well said!

it is a real shame they never got the credit they deserved!

    love 'em

  • bullshit. are you sayin that oasis and the roses are at the same level?? c'mon man! if you don't like oasis i'm so sorry for you, but you can't say that they didn't write good songs

  • lol on the 1 dodgy 1. I know the album you mean ;)

  • totally Agreed. Oasis and Coldplay are joke.

  • which is the dodgy album. first or last. i reckon the second is the best. very under-rated

  • Beautiful song to get baked too.

I'm 14 and this is my favorite band. <3

  • The best song by the Best British band ever. the Stone Roses and Oasis come nowhere near the class of The verve and this song, excuse the the pun will live longer in history than anything written by messers Brown and gallagher.

  • 0:49 lol

  • best british band next to the beatles

  • unbelievably haunting

  • what a tune... best of theirs by far.

  • Strong contender for the greatest British song ever written.

  • magnificent....

  • Super class

  • Great great song, their best imho.

  • man, you can really here the beatles inspiration in this band...mostly lennon

  • John Lennon's Mind Games.

  • shh.........don't say it too loud.

  • The beat is unbelievable this is true music right here have they got any other songs like this with the beat i kno bittersweet symphony is awesome as well but do they have any others???

  • Theyre such an awesome band, with songs written in such a way, theyre just awesome.

  • Love em they are well underrated!

  • @FunkiiMonkey09 not in my gaff they aint!

  • what a class split up tune,...!!!

  • True. One of their best.

  • i have probably heard/watched this a million times. never gets old.

  • Tracy

  • omg what a fuckin tune

  • this song is a masterpiece

  • le chanteur est tres beau les autres aussi ..

  • the opening lyrics of the song are based on the first two stanzas of william blake's poem london.

  • Yeah, I read that. I know Suede's She Walks In Beauty is the opening line of Byron's poem (She walks in beauty, like the night, Of cloudless climes and starry skies; And all that 's best of dark and bright, Meet in her aspect and her eyes)... got me wondering what other songs are started like that.

  • The Verve are amazing!

  • beautiful.

  • every human being on the planet should listen to this. The world would be a better place. This and velvet morning are ashcrofts two best achievements, These achievements mark the pinacle of songwriting and human emotion.

  • now this is what you call music

  • This video is small clips of other vids...did they always intend this to be their last song?

Cuz Urban Hymns was written by Ashcroft with the intention of it being his first solo album. (I think)

  • Hmm not sure about that, I know most of the stuff on their newest album Forth was written solely by Ashcroft and just played by "The Verve"....I think long gone are the days of a Storm in Heaven and A Nothern Soul where they wrote music in drug fuelled jam sessions. I know Urban Hymns had a sound of it's own but they also had a 5th band member Simon Tong who might have influenced that.

  • That is true...at least the drug part. lol!

I wish they'd do that again... they had such a distinctive sound back then...but, their new stuff is still really good.

  • true song,true words,real feelings and emotions,nothing stupid,simple and beatiful,i love it

  • "Copying Oasis"

Have you been on the crack pipe?!?

    You absolute melon

  • Your opinion makes no sense, Oasis were inspired by The Verve not the other way around.

Back to the 'crack pelo' you go

  • oasis wishes! Not on their best drugs on their best day

  • did u know that the clapping from the outro is performed by liam gallagher from oasis? theyre like best firends or smth

  • I know that they broke into a church once to get pissed on the communion wine. Idiots ^^
