@MrCeej9999 That's crazy man i've been listening to this song for a while now and we just started studying William Blake at my school. I never imagined there would be a connection. Thanks for sharing the info.
Now for an English lesson, for all you crazy kids. This is the poem that the songs based on. Called London, by William Blake I wander thro’ each charter’d street, Near where the charter’d Thames does flow, And mark in every face I meet Marks of weakness, marks of woe. In every cry of every Man, In every Infant’s cry of fear, In every voice, in every ban, The mind-forg’d manacles I hear.
this song reminds me that life exist, and that music is life. It´s the talent of The verve, they remind us intense feelings do exist in the music. And music is the power of feelings
They'd split up by the time this was released, Ashcroft on his own created the vidoe montage using clips from their previous videos and he did it really well.
Fast forward 13 years when Ashcroft just went over the heads of the other band members and directed the video for "Rather Be" featuring himself, on his own without consulting the other band members.
The first time I heard the strings on this track, I thought it sounded like another song, and after ages wracking my wee monkey brain, I realised it was John Lennon's Mind Games.
there amazin btw seen them 3 times and ashcroft solo top notch band.....it looks like each of their videos is directed by david lynch so weird but awesome
I can't describe how much I love this song. What an underrated band and song. So soulful, so heartwrenching, yet so heart-warming... What a voice, what lyrics, what a voice...
I've read a bit about the history of opium, and some of the English poets' works that have been inspired by opium, and this song seems to me to be in the same sort of vein. opium and heroin are probably nice drugs when you start out, but from what I've read about opium history, it's a damn nasty habit when it gets you! When you first try it though, it's like..all psychedelic, even.

One of my very favourite tracks from my favourite album - although the album version of this is much better than this radio edited one. I agree that this does sound similar to the opening bars of Mind Games, but thats not a crime - ofcourse The Beatles never copied any other artists did they?!
Haunting... Blake deserves recognition for the beauty and hooror of the of transition to experience... Ashcroft seems to have worked it out by himself... magick
Sounds like Mind Games particularly at the beginning it's almost note for note. If this were Oasis they'd be ripped for copying The Beatles (or Lennon in this case)
I'm sorry for upsetting you man. i just don't like anything that oasis have ever produced. that's just one mans opinion. obviously they are a good band or else they would never have got to the point that they are at. but as i said i just don't like them. bullshit. are you sayin that oasis and the roses are at the same level?? c'mon man! if you don't like oasis i'm so sorry for you, but you can't say that they didn't write good songs
The best song by the Best British band ever. the Stone Roses and Oasis come nowhere near the class of The verve and this song, excuse the the pun will live longer in history than anything written by messers Brown and gallagher.
The beat is unbelievable this is true music right here have they got any other songs like this with the beat i kno bittersweet symphony is awesome as well but do they have any others???
Yeah, I read that. I know Suede's She Walks In Beauty is the opening line of Byron's poem (She walks in beauty, like the night, Of cloudless climes and starry skies; And all that 's best of dark and bright, Meet in her aspect and her eyes)... got me wondering what other songs are started like that.

@muzzawelsh I don't think it does, Cast No Shadow was on What The Story Morning Glory which was 1994? This was released in 1995.
Noel Gallagher actually wrote Cast No Shadow for Richard Ashcroft, and in return Richard Ashcroft wrote the song A Northern Soul for Noel.
