@hotlanta35 the prob. wit ur ? bro is they r 2 heavy give off to much heat and r 2 fast for a gunship duty.... bileave me i agree wit ya %110 but the USAF just wont do it ( assholes)
Some youngsters, after watching a video like this, decide then and there that they will fly one of these airplanes when they grow up. Most others are bored, and go home to their video games and TV. Sad but true fact.
I love this aircraft. I see and hear these fly over my house all the time. It gets really loud sometimes when they come in low to land at Westover Air Reserve base near my house.
Was stationed at Dover AFB DE, this was a sight for sore eyes when they returned from trips..I miss hearing the whine of those engines when they take off..Hear them from time to time going into the AFB near my house..brings back old memories
those carry up to two tanks in them too. i went to the RI airshow where they didnt fly it, they parked it and you could go inside the cargo hold (not the cockpit)
Civilian Airport run by the Port Authority of NY and NJ. The Air National Guard is a tenant on the field and offers the primary fire and crash protection for the field.
Lots of reports in the public media and military press that they're looking to go to C-17's in FY 2009. I'd post a few of the articles, but the Tube won't let me.
I was stationed near Ramstein AB, and to watch one of these take off is incredible. They appear to be so seemingly slow at take off. It looks as though it's going to just fall right out the air. This is one Amazing Aircraft!
nahh the B2 landed in britain a few years back at an airshow at RAF Fairford which i live about 30 miles away from so any US training excersizes i usually get a glimps of some F 16's and B1's they've now got two B2 hangers and an inflatable B2 hanger dont ask why it looks like a beige bubble.
It wasnt a stall, Stall is somewhere around 140 knots. I dont think he was going much faster than that though. Its so big, it looks like its going slower than it is. a 258" wingspan keeps em up.
I feel your pain. I use to be stationed at Norfolk Naval Base which is basically across the street from Norfolk Air Force Base. Man you can hear those things taking off while inside the ship. I stood right under its takeoff path one day just to see how loud that thing really is. Luckily I still have some hearing left lol. Loud is an understatement
3 AM and jet lag after X/C trip to sisters' place- nephew playing record at this hour, and C-5's were shrilly running engines on flight line- I WOKE UP IN LOVE THIS MORNING- Partridge Family- was record he was playing- I was NOT pleased with him at that moment!
i feel your pain too... I live about a mile from the defence hub of northern Australia... we have 2 naval installations, a major army base and the air force base... so 4 bases PLUS the civie airport... all served by the same runway... 24hrs a day... at least i know what C-17's and F/A-18c/f's sound like... sounds like FREEDOM! (ps please dont laugh at us cos we still have f18c's! its not our fault we spend our defence budget on beer xD)
oh and the same airport also serves heaps of visiting forces. Its not unusual to see a few US aircraft sitting on the tarmac. there was a few f15s here a few days ago... no idea why... and this same airport is the only place outside of any US base that the B2 has landed. Im so glad we're allies!
Actually, we were flying at about 110 knots or 124 mph. If you notice that flaps are full down which allows for the slow speed. The rocking was because I was throwing the yoke full left and right. Kinda waving to the crowd. I was the aircraft commander of this flight. Fathers day in 2003. I have since retired and do miss the galaxy though not the BS of the military.
I am the pilot of this video. We had a 115 knot approach speed, during the go-around we were able to go beyond 45 degrees of bank because we were already at our flap retraction speed. The aircraft only weighed about 430K pounds. I have more than 5000 hours in the Galaxy. I will sure miss the "Whine" of the engines when they put the new GE engines on them. Cheers!
As a C-5 jet mechanic, I will miss the sound but I will gladly say goodbye in exchange for the CF6 which has 4 times the average wing life over the 60's TF-39-1C
B-52 pilot was a reckless fool who took 3 other lives along with his own. One of those who were on board took the place of another crewman to spare him the possible fate that he himself would suffer- He knew the pilot's rep, and did not allow the other guy to fly that day, taking his place- H E R O :)
What a memorable and very touching story of self-sacrifice. A hero indeed. That incident should be known more widely, and the man in question honored.
I was just thinking of that...Except these pilots are doing everything right, unlike those idiots who crashed the B-52 while trying to do a circle around the tower.

I remember one of these flyin over my school while the ROTC guys were out.
I say to one, "Hey what do you make of that?"
"It's a C-17 Globmaster of course, finest cargo plane in the air force!"
Better check those facts..."I know what I'm talking about do you dare question me?"
No sir.
I go over to the commanding officer, "Hey what do you make of that?"
"That's a C-5, biggest plane in the United States Air Force!""
Good, now tell that to your subordinate there, he didn't believe me.

thats the same engine as the 747 200/300 why cant they do that haha
muthatrukka24 2 years ago
Not exactly the same, the engine on the 747 is a development of the TF39. Similar but more refined. Nothing beats the sound of the Galaxy!
MGTurbo 2 years ago
true true
muthatrukka24 2 years ago
Some 747 engines are JT9D's and PW4000's built by Pratt & Whitney and no relation to the TF-39
pklute63 2 years ago
Correct of course, but they do have a generic 'commercial' note whereas the TF39 is unmistakeable.
