Somebody needs to bring back the vista cruiser. Olds may be dead and gone, but the Vista's design cues are too damn cool to go by the wayside. Bring back raised roofs, second row and rear glass, forward facing 3rd row seats, the dual opening tailgate, and woodgrain!
Where did the attitude of "I'd never be caught dead in a station wagon" come from? I've owned at least one station wagon and I've ridden as a passenger in a few, and I've seen lots of them in my lifetime. Why some people don't like them is beyond me.
Back in the days, people bought station wagons because they had large families. They also bought station wagons because they travel often and need the space. Some bought it for other reasons. Maybe some bought it for no reason at all. Today, people who buy station wagons are looking for the same concept. However, in my opinion, they are seeking for something that is not there. Station wagons today seem smaller. As practical as a regular sedan.
I've always liked wagons. In fact I'm looking to get one now. But the one thing I hate about them is that the 3-way tailgate or lifting window/lowering tailgate style (like you find on old LTDs or even old S-10 Blazers) can be found only on the full-size wagons. Give me a 1994 Buick Century wagon with one of those tailgates in it. (And a standard transmission, too, but I know I'm dreaming....)
My mom hated her 1968 and '70 Chrysler Town and Country wagons. She could'nt associate herself w/a wagon and replaced the '70 w/a '71 Continental Mark III that was more 'her'.
@phmike69 I've enjoyed my 92 Buick Roadmaster since 95. Had to get a sedan this spring after a black ice wipe-out took out the grill, the headlights, and hood. It still runs like a top, and I plan on putting her back on the road as soon as I locate a parts car. A grand car; better than a truck or SUV. I miss it!!
Wagons really need to make a comeback. And I'm not talkin' about just a long 5-6 person sedan that claims to be a wagon. I'm talkin' rear-facing-fold-down-seat, 9 person, V8 powered, ultra-comfortable full-size wagons! In my mind, there is no better wagon than a fully-loaded 1973 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser! Of course, a Buick Estate or Chevy Caprice wagon wouldn't be far behind!
Have you ever stoped to think that the reason the auto industry is in so much trouble is that they aren't making cars that anyone wants? Their full-size vehicles are yesterday's mid-size. New cars suck.
@taxiguy57 If you can bug GM enough, the Pontiac G8 might be resurrected with a Chevy badge on its nose. The Australian Holden Commodore it is based on has never been without a proper station wagon in its lineup. Some moron decided that something that weighs 2.5 tonnes is an efficient way of transporting a family around, and the idea stuck. The current V6 Commodore can do 560 miles on a single tank!
Bring back the 1970 Chrysler New Yorker Wagon and the 75 Impala Wagons. Those are fucking huge i WILL NOT buy a small ass wagon that is smaller than the regular car i drive. If its a wagon it better be full sized, not this compact bullshit
Well wagons didnt get the good economy. MY 84 Olds custom cruiser only gets 16mpg. A minivan fully loaded still gets 18. Then again my wagon is 5000 lbs and got a V8
No I am not on crack. Actually when these old wagons were fresh off the assembly line they could get 20-25 MPG. But since age has set in the fuel economy dropped. 10 is not good for a classic wagon. Its horrendous and shows that the vehicle is not runing good at all and has not been taken care of properly.Your jeep only gets 18 because I would assume its a four wheel drive vehicle and your not using it for its intended purpose of off roading.
@nascar350 American engineers never did understand efficiency. Even a 1990 Holden Commodore wagon, an Australian car with a 5 litre V8, could do 25 miles to the gallon. 221 horsepower, and that was only the basic V8 model. This has more than enough room for 5 adults, and a decent cargo space in the back. It could even do 0-60 in 7 seconds, and a 15 second quarter mile.
@Mechknight73 Ill admit, American engineers were never bright about the efficiency part. However they did undertsnd on how to build a large car that could utilize a gallon of fuel to at least propell a 5000 lbs vehicle at least 25 miles. Amaricans actually greatly favored the same size motors that you describe just above. Yeas sure ours were down on horse power but we changed that for torque. esintially they were the same things though both getting around the same fuel economy from the line.
@nascar350 Australian V8s had both; torque and fuel economy. A lightweight body propelled by an efficient 5 litre V8, and made a serious effort at aerodynamics, right from the early 80s. Ford Australia doesn't get it. They still make their station wagons as either SUV-type cars or a leaf-sprung conventional station wagon. GM Holden did away with leaf springs on wagons in 1971, rear drums in 1988
I can see station wagons making a comeback in the U.S. because of the greater mpg's that you can get with them over a CUV and def an SUV especially when gas prices start to go back up above 3 dollars a gallon here in the U.S.
wow you are a special kind of person. To each thier own but you need to realize the only companies that may be around inthe future are Hyundai and subaru nobody is making any profits.
u right uber2ber,make them big like my 1969 8.5 litter fleetwood and u dont need a wagon. i can trow20 cases of beer full of ice and on top a bunch of meat for a barbecue and a 10 girls inside with me to make my life sweeter..peace n love
caddywagons, hearses were cool, back when caddy's were cool, ie pre-73, my opinion all american cars went lame in the mid '70's and never recovered. bring back the full bodied big block all american steel groundpounders
The station wagon was not forgotten, it was renamed the "mini van" and then the "sport utility vehicle" and finally the "cross over vehicle", all attempts to masculate it. Anything with five doors is a station wagon. Bring back the hot hatchback, that would be news.
There is no way you going to insult a real station wagon by calling crossovers or minivans station wagons. A real station wagon is long rear wheel drive and body on frame.
Sounds good. If the CTS Wagon goes over good, I think we may see a Chevy or Pontiac version aimed at the more general public (Caprice?). That is, assuming the government lets them.
@HeadTater Pay GM Holden a licence to build a Chevy badged E2 Commodore wagon(What the Pontiac G8 wagon started from. Essentially the same car with a few trim changes) They will sell, because they're big enough to carry a family and all its stuff, and would embarrass ANY current SUV on the US market for efficiency
Old school impalas for the win. What the hell are these new station wagons. They're so ugly.

that dosent look anything like a station wagon. Real station wagons died in 1996 when the last real caprice rolled off the assembly line.

Can modern "sports wagons" swallow standard 2440mm x 1220mm boards? The wagons of the 70's could!
And look at the extra rear windows flanking the cargo area; they're even smaller than a dinner plate. Doesn't look very promising...

The station wagon is a car that should have never, ever been discontinued. Now we're stuck with gas hogging SUV's.

If it wasn't for the goddamn EPA and the conspiracy to give us less, we'd still be driving the really nice 60's and 70's wagons.

It was Ford who introduced the magic door gate & GM who came up with the "Clam Shell" tail gate. Both great innovations.
