this is one of the most informative videos on youtube, thank you so much for the enlightenment because I love all these songs but I had no idea they were sampled
I've been goin' through all your videos (for at least the 3rd or 4th time), tryin' to make a mixtape of my own out of all the tracks - and bring back some memories - but you really nailed it on this one!
How come in all these posts no one mentioned that David McCallum is the actor from "Man from U.N.C.L.E." and more recent "NCIS" on CBS. I believe "The Edge" was a 45 in 1967 and had a pic sleeve too!
The original song was called "You make Me Happy" released in 1984 by Hi-Tension, a UK jazz funk band. although the Surface version had changed the lyrics a bit (though not much) the music is pretty much the same on both songs.
Remember, David Porter had be a writer/producer with Isaac Hayes of many Sam and Dave hit songs...also "I Wanna Be Where You Are" was written by Leon Ware (I Want You by Marvin Gaye) and Arthur "T-Boy" Ross (Diana's brother)...Marvin has a Interlude cover of it on the "I Want You" album....
If you can find T-Boy's album, you could do a feature on Leon Ware (Musical Massage", T-Boy, and "I Want You"...I have Musical Massage...
Funktuall- For me, the "golden age" of hip hop was the early 90's to the mid 90's. What's your take on today's hip hop? I've stopped listening to hip hop because I can't take the simplistic beats and meaningless rhymes. Am I discounting today's hip hop? Is it a case of "things were always better in my day" attitude? What's your take? Because I'm not going to waste my time listening to Soldier Boy or Lean Like a Cholo...
Yea its totally wacked!! Southern slang and Reggaton is wacked out, but thats the same thing they used to say aout Hip hop back in the days remember? Peace out.
omg! I Just stumbled on these posts and I am hooked! I am trying to catch up so i watch on my phone when I am out and on the puter when i get home! I LOVE THIS MAN! Keep it up!
Good stuff funktuall, did you know that a group called the "The New Style" also used that MJ track. They had a track called "dropping the bomb". They had a very hot album too. BTW they didn't have great success until they changed their group name to Naughty by Nature. Keep schooling the youngin.
lol..not actually all my beats are inspired by his style of sampling. I want people to know the secrets to sampling and you do a amazing job at it. Evertime I watch you. I learn a new style or sample. thanx
dude i am a big fan, first because i grew up in the bx in the 70's, and because you spread knowledge of the love that the music was meant to convey....anyhoo, i heard dj theodore play this jam the other day and i can't remember the name. it goes: "she walks like sex, talks like sex, just like sex"...what is the name and the artist i know you know...
Good stuff once again Funktual, u got me hooked. I feel as though a DJ Premier episode definitely needs to be done though or at least please show us a few of the tracks he sampled.
gigolo tony used the fat albert on his"smurph rock"back in the days, too.more kraftwerk information: KRAFTWERK-THE MAN MACHINE is used on ROCKIN IT from the FEARLESS 4(1983). JAY Z sampled it from ROCKIN IT on his song SUNSHINE.listen to it!

yo funktuall i am an avid listner(watcher) of your youtube top10 samples and i notice that you never talked about a sample that his dear to me. maybe you just dissmissed it or maybe you dont know it(how crazy that would be??)But anyway if you wanna check out the person to person track by AWB at about 2min flat you may found a classic jam from epmd. But i wont tell ya wich, check for yourself!! ha ha keep te funk alive!you da best peace
ps sorry 4 da syntax english his not my first language
U know, if you go back and listen to mc lyte's poor georgie, on the chorus there was another vocal sample used in addition to the michael jackson vocal. I'm not for sure, but i think it was a sample of the supremes, using diana ross vocals. Couldn't begin to tell what song it could be from, but her voice is almost unmistakeable.
I feel you on being young and not knowing every song on the planet. I miss the days when I would buy a cassette and that would be my only new music for like 2-3 months. Now there's just way too much music out there...
keep it up man, good job

To funktuall,
Here something interesting:
"Happy" by Surface(1987) was actually a REMAKE.
The original song was called "You make Me Happy" released in 1984 by Hi-Tension, a UK jazz funk band. although the Surface version had changed the lyrics a bit (though not much) the music is pretty much the same on both songs.
....so now you know!!! : D

I love the T-Shirt. Reminds me of the Geto Boys and Eazy-E shirts I see the kids wear now.
Thank you for dropping another video.

I feel you on being young and not knowing every song on the planet. I miss the days when I would buy a cassette and that would be my only new music for like 2-3 months. Now there's just way too much music out there...

Nice to see you back in top form. Nice backdrop. Great acoustics. Give your Wife props for her camera work.
I remember riding my bike to the local Marine Base PX to buy my MJ single of I Wanna Be Where You Are. It was 35 cents.
