If you can try and work with a company or shop that is based in your country it's much easier to return something that's not good enough..I have been tying flies for almost 29 years so I have built up some good materials from all over the U.K and from abroad and even Ebay.. I'll send you some links to ones that I have used with no problems...
Any of the subs which the fly tying companies that I have seen are all wrong especially in the thickness, they are all too thick and coarse but if you look in any of the sewing shops and ask for a darning wool close to the colour I used you'll find that they are much finer and easier to use, it's worth trying..
II use a Sony PD170p which is not quite a normal camcorder it has a few extras, I use small lenses which screw on to the lense which act like a magnifier giving me +1 to +2 this is what gives me the close up I want maybe your camera can do the same they are not expensive..I hope this is of some help to you, please let me know how you get on..
When you are doing the whip finish try and not wind the turns too tight as they will stick, then when you pull the knot at the end this will tighten the knot and another thing three turns are enough..
I love your videos!! About the discussion of the wool you use I can say that the grayling love my version tied with bisam. This is my best grayling-killer......with a small spot of copper-wire at the end.... Please go on with your excellent work of fly-tying......All the best Thomas
Don't tell your mother that you are using you school jumper to tye flies but if it catches fish like the real material then you could sell your jumpers for a great profit...
Any chance we can see this pattern which you speak of, that is the "I have a good bug pattern that has worked really well for me over many years I'll post a video of it one day.." Im very interested to see it. As always your videos, tying instructions and skills are exceptional.
I'm sorry to say that I haven't found a substitute that I could say was great but the Veniards sub does sell well. I have a good bug pattern that has worked really well for me over many years I'll post a video of it one day..
I've tied them with a small rope of tightly wound muskrat or hare's dubbing to get the segmented look but like the effect and quickness of the yarn much better.
Hi Davie
In what sizes do you tyi this fly?
SWL061 16 hours ago
Hi SWL061,
The most productive size for me is a size 14, I've also tyed it on a size bigger and one size smaller which has been quite successful....

Thanks for this Davie, I like the idea of whip finishing at the back because you end up with a nice little copper tag..

Hello Mr. McPhail,
It seems as if you have the "elastic" copper wire. Mine tends to break, particularly if I attempt to whip finish like you do.

Hi Davie, what a simple fly but if the wool is as rare as you say this fly will become extinct, which is a shame. regards Alan

Hello Davie
Not so sure if this makes a difference, but when i sat down to tie in my school uniform i pulled some of the material for the jumper off to use.
it is the same colour and suprisingly, also 85% wool and 15% nylon
All the best
