  • hey craig,just donr my 1st ever brew...i used coopers hertage lager and light malt extract,primed with 3oz of sugar in the keg.

    7 days in the fermenter,2 days in the keg...and ok i know its not clear yet but geting some bubbles and already had a taste i cant keep my hands off it...prob the last pint will be great...

  • im assuming you can use that fermenting vessel to brew beer from grains and hops etc? not just with the kits

  • woops i mixed my pale ale with heaps of boiling hot water and the thermometer reading was around 37degrees celcius so i opened the lid and put some ice in it and turned the fan on till it cooled down now its stabilised to around 24 degrees celcius..... will that period of boiling hot water right at the start ruin my brew ??

  • good video mate, Coopers is my local brewery and i think one of the last Australian owned, most south aussies grew up on their pale or sparkling ale! I've used this kit and had great fun but eventually got to lazy to clean bottles but have decided to get back into it using the keg/co2 kit which is still relatively cheap.Keep up the good work :)

  • hi mate im australian and i bought two kits from my local kmart, the package looks the same as yours except inside the fermenter is a clear barrel with a seperate part called a filter, which you remove after 3 days of fermenting, alsoo it has no air lock, which makes it hard to determine whether or not its ready to bottle, what are your thoughts and also what do you think about the idea of fermenting the wort with a litre of sarsparella syrup?? i have one fermenting atm,

  • Hi Craig. I got the latest kit from coopers. It doesn't make use of an airlock. It comes as a 3 piece bucket with a tap. My supplier told me that he has never used this kit before and that I must inform him how well it works. Hopefully my beer would turn out ok. I got a hydrometer aswell within the kit to test the gravity.

  • Hi Criag. Never brewed before. Bought the equipment and a kit on Ebay and just doing some research before I start brewing.Love your vids.Very informative.One question though. My kit that's coming has a fermenting bucket and a barrel yet that kit only seem to have the barrel.Do I actually need to use the fermenting bucket?

  • @SteveSalisbury You only really need one vessel for making beer, but if it doesn't have a "tap" than you either need a siphon tool, or a bottling bucket with a tap. Why not just brew in the bucket with the tap and bottle from there? Some people batch prime, which requires transferring the beer to a second vessel. You should call me on my Friday show and I cam explain it much better.

  • hey i plan to get one of these home brew kits and i was wondering is 65 degrees to cool to have your fermenter sitting in during fermentation? and do temps change the taste?

  • @ohioracer28 65f is down near the bottom of what coopers yeast will ferment at but it should still work as long as it doesn't go any lower. A few things you can do are: buy a heat belt, or if you can, buy a yeast that will withstand lower temps (go to immolateus's channel and ask him about that) or order a Coopers European Lager kit. It has to ferment at lower temps. Or simply start your wort at 74f and wrap a blanket around it. Fermentation will create heat which will keep your temp up.

  • @CraigTube And yes, temperature does affect flavor but mostly high temps. Some would envy you for having such a cool place to brew. Your beer will take longer to brew but it will taste great.

  • I made some brew last year and when I made it and drunk it there was quite a lot of sediment at the bottom of the bottle what can I do this time round to stop this also how long can u bottle the beer/ cider for

  • @dot43 There will always be sediment in the bottles due to in-bottle fermentation which create the carbonation. You can reduce it by letting the beer sit longer in the fermenter to clear.

  • Hey craig quick question. I bought this kit and started my first brew of cooper lager yesterday. I've seen no signs of fermentation yet but their is alot of white sediment at the bottom which I think is sugar because I didn't stir in enough to start with. My initial gravity was at 1.042 but I was wondering if I should invert my fermenter to mix in the sugar or just try stiring it in but im worried this will get to much oxygen in.

  • Hey Craig, just a quick question if you wouldn't mind. I've just bottled my first ever batch of home brewed beer. :) I used the Coopers lager. The colour of my beer appears to be rather bright and not the typical pale colour of lager. I want to be able to drink this batch with my friends but I fear the colour is going to be a major put off for them. Does the lager get paler as it sits in the bottle for the week or so?

  • @glenns11 I think the problem is that you're used to commercial beers thar are made with less malt and more other adjuncts like corn. Yours may lighten up a bit, but it might never look like a store brand beer. It also might not taste as much like a lager because Trure lagering requires very low temps during fermentation. Hopefully you enjoy what you've got there.

  • Hi Craig, I got this kit right after I watched your video. Awesome btw. Today is my 3rd day of fermenting and the airlock bubbles has slowed down to about once every 4 minutes. Is this normal? I also took a hydrometer reading and it seems to be doing fine but the beer has a very bitter taste. Is this normal during fermentation?

  • @FCMalan No worries mate. Its probably full of yeast still. Just give it the full week to ferment out.

  • hi craig, i bought this kit after watching your video as i've been wanting to get into homebrewing. i've followed the instructions to the letter and started this kit on tues 3rd april 11 on wednesday morning the airlock was bubbling away nicely indicating fermentation was happening but on thursday the bubbling has stopped the temp is at 22 degrees and i can see sediment around the bottom of the fermenter is it normal to stop bubbling after 1 day or have i got a prob any advise would be helpfull

  • @gixer1974 It might be that you just have a leaky seal on your fermenter, which is not a problem. The gas may be finding another way out. Have a look inside and see if there"s a brown ring around the inside. That"s always a good sign that things are fine.

  • @CraigTube looking inside the fermenter i can see a brown ring round the inside, i'll leave it for a few more days and see if the water in the airlock levels off aswell, hopefully i'll have some nice beer in the end, cheers for the advise and keep up the good vids

  • @xvidasx the beer will be stonger but you risk having a beer with no head at all that doesn't taste that great.

  • hi graig iam making beer for 20 years+ on day i meet a real master brewer from germany he told me to put a green apple cut it in 4 remove the seed drop it in the bucket for 5 day fermantaion and after 5 day wow what a differance my god it remove the bad tast of yeast so much better now lot of peoples do this remember the green apple the beer is so wow

  • @2011styckaren CO2 will happen after you put the beer into bottles and put in the priming sugar, in this case the little candy drops cooper gives you. You'll be bottle conditioning this way, and the process takes about 2 weeks for carbonation to be noticeable, but letting it go for six weeks or more is best to really get a nice head on the beers.

    I have brought this kit with the coopers lager and am on my 6th day my hydrometer reading is 10.12 for 2 days in a row however the beer looks a bit cloudy and doesnt really have a head is this normal for this type of kit and does it mean it has finished fermenting and time to bottle.

    I also have a 2nd fermenter that has the brewtec premium draught which seems to be doing great ,pretty much what im asking is my lager stuffed or is it normal?(1st brew ever)

  • Craig..question -I just realized when i bottled 2 weeks ago I only used 1 carbonation drop instead of 2 as the directions called for. Since i plan to let it condition in the bottles for 4 weeks ...can i open the PET bottles and add another carbonation drop in the bottles or will that screw up the conditioning process? thanks!

  • Hey Graig..again thx for this video. I have brewed the lager from the coopers kit & it came out great, had a beer taste gathering with friends & they were all impressed with the taste of this beer. I let it in the fermenter for 3 weeks & bottled for 3 weeks. Right now I have a Coopers Pilsner conditioning now after fermenting for 2 weeks & a Cerveza in the fermenter, think i'l lkeep in the fermenter for 2 weeks & condition for 4 weeks in the bottle. Keep on brewing :)

  • @measurecan Try to match your room temp and keep it there. It will go up a bit during the first few days. No worries.

  • Thanks for the videos. I'm about to start my first batch with Mr. Beer. A few questions...First, can I use two cans instead of the standard one can in the brew instructions (would I need to wait longer to bottle?). And would using two cans mean I need to use two packets of yeast? Thanks for any info!

  • @ryanwagner100 Two cans is great, better than one can and dextrose. It shouldn't take longer to finish. Go ahead and use both yeast packets. Have fun!

I used to be in a band that was kinda of big ( people used to say we payed the promoters to make the people like us) but you know what, you CAN NOT argue with talent. I just hope you know that it was because of the video where you are CAMPING out that made me want to try and brew my own beer.   • Question...during the initial fermentation, i had to go out of town for about 3 weeks. Usually I would bottle after 2 weeks. Since I have left it ferment in the coopers fermenter for 3 weeks vs. 1 or 2 weeks will that have a negative effect on the beer? Thank You

  • @sminnis1 If you had a good seal on the fermenter, it should be just fine.

  • I like your videos and it made me buy the kit. Everything went great but I have a question. I made the Australian Lager that came with the kit, and it took about one week to be bottle ready, and has been bottled for three weeks now. I tried it though and it has a wine taste. Is that normal?

  • in this video you did not Activate the yeast. is that something you don't have to do because i did not do it like you.. i hope it works look like it did for you.

  • @aaronlovespott This yeast is made to just sprinkle in your wort. Some other yeasts suggest you re hydrate. It's a big debate in brewing, but in your case, you're fine. It is not necessary.

    The instructions I got with the Coopers yeast was to start in off in a warm bowl of

    water(37 to 42 degrees C), sprinkling it on top of the water and waiting 5 minutes for it to activate. Then pour it into the brew and mix. Some people add a little sugar into the bowl of warm water just to make sure it will begin the activation process.

  • @sminnis1 You might expect less head, and definitely less alcohol. Drink'er down and do the next one with 20 liters. You'll thank me in the end. :)

  • My wife says you sound like Richard Dryfuss (the guy who played hooper in jaws). I tend to agree! But,anyway,I'm going to try this for an idea I've had in my head for a few tears mow. I was re4ally good at wine making when I was a teen. My dad was so proud to show off my wines to relatives. I want to make a beer like they used to taste. I MUST bring it back!!!

  • I bought one of the kits and on day nine it is still pushing a bubble out of the airlock every minute or so. Should I still keg it? or should I wait untill the airlock dose not bubble at all? Please let me know. Thanks!

    I am a massive fan of Coopers and have been drinking there beers for years

    this year i got one of these kits and on my 5th brew at the moment.

    I have got in to what we call 2 can brewing where we get 2 cans of the extracts there is a real nice Coopers Vintage recipe on there site :)

    I saw they have a new version of this kit with a new design for the Fermenter.

    PS as I live in the same state as Coopers so it is handy that they are local :)

  • Hi Craig. Still learning mate. Kegged my 1st batch of Youngs Lager, just waiting now to taste. My fermenter didn't have a Carbon release, so bought one, fitted it. I have Geordie Larger Fermenting for 3 days now and its still no Bubbles. Got it in my airing cupboard. Any ideas mate.

    Your videos are excellent, I've watched quite a few of them and no doubt will be looking at more soon - you're a great teacher and a sound guy! I just started my first batch of home brew tonight. I got a Brewcraft Starter Brewery kit which is pretty similar to the Coopers one except you buy the bottles separately. The beer that comes with it is Munich Lager and it has the enhancer instead of plain dextrose - it smelled good so I have a good feeling about it.

  • . . . and add another drop? What temp do you store your bottles at during priming? Also the beer was still a bit cloudy and had a bit of a bitter taste (nothing too bad - doubt contamination). Do you think this will improve with time? It was fermented at around 24 deg like the kit states, although I have since read that lager should be fermented at 10 deg since then. Any thoughts?   • @nellythebellyberg I get asked a lot about using the drops with 500ml bottles. If they're plastic, I would try the second drop if they don't improve in a few days. Remember that will add another week to conditioning, so decide if you just want to drink them now and do it different next time. That lager you made is actually supposed to be fermented like an ale, so 24 is fine. If it's still cloudy, it's still working, so give it some more time. Place the bottles in a wormer place if you can.

  • @CraigTube Thanks Craig. I'll try leaving them a few more days and see if they warrant another drop. Perhaps the bitter taste I'm getting is due to the ale type yeast supplied with the kit. By the way have you ever tried the coopers canadian blond kit? I want to try that one next

  • Hi Craig. Great vids! I recently brewed a batch of coopers lager, pretty much exactly like you have done in your videos. The bottles I used were 500ml, and I used one carbonation drop (because I was too much of a pussy to use two in case I had a series of explosions on my hands!!). That was a week ago and I have been keeping the bottles in my sitting room. I recently cracked one and it seemed a bit flat. Do you think one drop is enough for a 500ml bottle? If not do you think I could open them .

  • Make sure to pull the curtain down there for the newcomers, direct sunlight or florescent light will damage the beer and make it skunky. Maybe it should be mentioned on the vid as there is a window just by the fermenter =) That was the only thing i reacted on, great job Craig with these videos, it made me start brewing.

  • hello craig! i have a question... when you do your hydrometer test towards the end of the process near the bottling stage what do you do with the beer in your hydrometer tube?     The best cider I ever tried looked like it was a home brew in and old bar, they scooped it out of a wooden barrel. Was cloudy, unchilled and once it was put in the glass I thought why am I putting this near my lips. It was the best cider I have ever tasted, very strong thought at around 15%! I was wondering if you had ever seen a kit that could make something along thse lines?

  • @supervascular I wish I knew more about what you are asking, but I don't have any info at this point. I've never heard of making cider out of malt extract.

  • @supervascular You can check out my website. There is a cider recipe on there that will get you about 13%. All that you need is 100% apple juice, corn sugar, cider yeast and time.

    I really liked this video and I am thinking of getting this started kit as I want to try my hand at beer larger and Cider. Since I am new to all of this, could you tell me if this coopers kit could be used to make cider as well? Or will I need different equiptment? Any suggestions on a good cider kit, im looking for something still and sweet?

    I absolutely love your videos. I'm an aspiring homebrewer in Japan and will purchase my equipment soon. I have two questions for you:

    1) I noticed the beer that comes with this kit (and most kits I've seen) is a lager. Is it ok to brew this at higher temps as opposed to lower temps most lagers should be done at?

    2) I've seen many malt extracts online. Do most come with the sugar you need for fermentation? Do I need to be careful what I buy?

  • For bottled water quality without the bottle price, I installed a filter system at my kitchen sink, I've had mine for 12yrs. It's a NSA brand, they went out of business a few years ago. It removes chlorine and other impurities. They are others on the market and there good for 20,000 gallons or more ( ESD is another brand) It's also great for coffee, cooking, and drinking, mine was $120. Now there around $200 that's only a penny a gallon. Well worth having pure water at your finger tips.

    I have seen on some websites where they say not to use twist off caps like the ones on plastic bottles. So pop off tops or twist on's that is the question. Thanks again i will stay tuned!

  • @lwylde100 I have heard that twist off glass bottles/caps are fine, but it depends on the capper and how much it squeezes the cap around the threads. I ended up with flat beers once, but my capper was old. Try a couple and see. Plastic bottles with screw on caps are absolutely fine. I use them all the time when I bottle.

  • @johnodon1968 Phew, I'm catching up. OK, I don't use bottled water simply because it's a pain to buy every time I brew. I have never used it, but intend on trying. My guess is that there would be a benefit for sure. No chlorine for one thing. My water is good quality, but not as clean as bottled, so it's something you're going to have to try. The debate over glass vs plastic will go on forever. I like plastic because of the screw on caps, and they won't explode if you over carbonate. More next..

  • @CraigTube Part 2. With glass, you have to get the priming sugar just right, which once you know the amount, isn't hard. I have used both glass and plastic and I did not notice any difference in the beer. Some prefer glass for a number of reasons, but I found that PET plastic holds the beer just as good and doesn't leak CO2 like some say it does. That said, I would love to get some of those glass flip-top bottles. They're sweet.

  • Hi craig, I have been watching your videos and decided to buy a coopers micro brew kit. It says on the carbonation drops to use 1 for a 375ml bottle or 2 for a 775ml bottle, I have 500ml bottles so do i use 1 or 2 drops? Also how long should it take for the airlock to start bubbling?

  • @kevinfallon1 I had the same question. craig may know a way to split the carb drops but I don't. I choose to use a bottling bucket if I am using odd size bottles. hope this helps. don't give up over trials, it'll keep you on your toes. god bless

  • Hi craig. do you know of a way to remove oder from the fermenter. mine is getting strong smelling.

  • @loknfwrd I usually soak mine in luke worm water and a cap or two full of bleach for a few hours. Then rinse very well. That's really all you can do.

  • @CraigTube I'm sure there'll be different brands of cleaning products in Canada and the US compared to the UK, out of curiosity, what do your home brew shops stock? Some of our branded deodorisers and cleansers are chlorine based, so bleach - as Craig said - seems a good option

  • Hey Craig, bought this exact setup and I'm in the process of adding water...the only problem is that after I added the extract and sugar, I added about a gallon of boiling water. Now I'm trying to get the temp down with cold water...will the initial high temp. ruin the flavor of my brew? Thanks -LB

  • @lewis131313 When this happens, place the fermenter in a clean sink full of cold water BEFORE adding any cold water. Stir. High temps can add off flavours to your beer.
