Both songs are good. And both vocals are good. You could say Neil Tennant's ain't as intense as Bono's. And you could say Bono's is overly pretentious. But why should you? They both have their qualities.
I listened to the original and once more decided that this version is much better. U2's version is simply distortion of guitar and Bono's meaningless shouts. Sorry U2 fans they have great songs but this scores better than the original...
@Actuallysalemslot , ha ha it is not better at all is so lame in comparison, no feeling passion or intensity. distortion or guitar? its magic, and meaningless shouts? im not sure how you come up with that conclusion, anyway im going to say it its lame gay shite in comparison.
I remember when this song came out a U2 fan magazine said that the Pet Shop Boys had "absolutely massacred" Where The Streets Have No Name by U2. I agree.
Bono should of mixed his original with I Can't Take My Eyes Off You....who knows people might still remember him for something more than his charity persona :D only messing U2 had some great songs, kinda shocked PSB released 4 covers as singles this, Its Alright, Go West & Always on My Mind. Maybe even more now been over a decade since I played them.
I found this video at a friend's favorite. Fantastic, a beautiful song, a different version but just as beautiful as the original. Beautiful issue altogether.
I remember hearing this for the first time and really digging it, thinking it was an amazing version, and then they kicked into the I Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You and it was like the biggest left turn imaginable, just so odd.
Ive got nothing against this version, but seriously the passion intensity and spirit of the U2's version is so much better, and you cannot compare Bono's vocals to this, these vocals are just lamer, plus there is no Edge magic guitar work nor Mullens brilliant drum work compared to a machine.
@P1eski No it isn't. The PSB's have barely changed the arrangement. The only real difference is that they've replaced song of the Edge's guitar parts to synthesizers.
I totally agree its a completely different song and a work of genius.
For the idiot who compared the writing skills to Lennon and Macartney well your talking utter rubbish Lennon touched the world and changed the music world as good as the PS Boys were they were not in that class
@fowlergod09 Well it takes an idiot to answer an idiot, they say...between 1986 and 1993 PSB reminded people of Lennon and McCartney in terms of songwriting, if you like it or not. Go and read the old issues of the English music magazine, Q, and see what you will say instead of blabbering things with your shit mouth...
@frijoleroable .. This version got higher in the charts than U2s Version without the gothic marketing etc, dont be bitter, pop music is just a laugh... It was a piss take going back to the days when Neil Tennant described Bono as the 8th deadly sin.. The Edge returned the favour in concert when he strummed the opening to PSB hit "Rent " on stage.. They are pals now adays !
U2 are a million times better than Pet Shop Boys, not only have they ruined "Where the Streets Have No Name", they also ruined "I Cant Take My Eyes Off You", the songs arent similar in any way whatsoever, the only think PSB did was change the sound of "I Cant Take My Eyes Off You" and mix it in, there's nothing special about it!
As for the comment "It also showed the pompous U2 for what they were", very funny, U2 are regarded as one of the best bands EVER, PSB's are not! End of story..
Pet Shop Boys have sold over 100 million records worldwide and are listed as the most successful duo in pop music history. Since 1986, they have had 42 Top 30 singles and 22 Top 10 hits in the UK, including four Number Ones: "West End Girls," "It's a Sin," "Always on My Mind," and "Heart."
At the 2009 BRIT Awards, Pet Shop Boys received an award for Outstanding Contribution to Music presented to them by Brandon Flowers.
@IrishKingpin1984 You are wrong all the way, mate. Pet Shop Boys are legends and considered one of the best POP bands ever, and Neil's and Chris' songwriting skills remind that of Mcartney and Lennon. Just because U2 is a rock band and hails to the lowest common denominator average music listener, this does not mean PSB should be disregarded. They are intellectually way above that pompous ass of Bono...

This isn't just a cover of the U2 song..... they merge it with I Can't Take My Eyes Off You, which is a much older song.
PSB brilliantly spotted how much the U2 song resembled I Can't Take My Eyes Off You and merged the two.
Brilliant. It also showed the pompous U2for what they were and thankfully it seemed to have a postive effect on them.
