David sings this beautifully and I think that he sings it because he believes it. I've just watched the 2010 Carols by Candlelight tonight and he just sang it again. God bless you David. Thanks for posting this rendition.
This is a beautiful song. I heard this song by the same singer back in 1991 "carols in Domain" in Sydney Australia. It left wonderful impression to me.
it's a crying shame that they totally left out the second verse referring to the crucifixion.. which absolutely MAKES the song! OH well,, he has a nice voice and I love the orchestra with it!
@Jeavey Hobson included the second verse tonight (Carols by Candlelight 2010) so perhaps it will be posted for everyone to enjoy, because he was in splendid voice!
I will butt in to the debate between kiwiscoota and becoblue. Yes kiwiscoota you have knowledge of David's operatic roles, but unfortunately you have little knowledge of his so-called training. Becoblue is right, David has had no formal training other than for roles, language etc. He did go to Uni, firstly to train as an accountant/economist but music got in the way and he trained in music composition etc, never formal training in singing.
His Rossini roles include "Lindoro" in L'Italiana in Algeri, "Ramiro" in La Cenerentola, "Count Almaviva" in The Barber of Seville, "Dorvil" in La scala di seta and "Florville" in Il Signor Bruschino.
Other roles have included "Ernesto" in Don Pasquale (Gaetano Donizetti), "Nadir" in The Pearl Fishers (Georges Bizet), and "Orphée" in Orphée et Eurydice, (the rarely-performed 1774 Paris version for tenor) by Christoph Willibald Gluck.
kiwiscoota - I'm glad you are so familiar with David's operatic career, as am I. Thank you for detailing many of his career highlights, especially as many viewers may be unaware of what a truly talented and versatile artist David is.
In my original comment I was rather obliquely trying to point out that he had achieved all of this with no formal training, apart from that required for each production. He didn't in fact "study opera for years at the Australian Conservatory (?)"
Thanks for pasting Hobson's operatic repertoire across from Wikipedia - although I believe you missed his "Nemorino" in The Elixir of Love! Becoblue and versatile0268 are right, Hobson did NOT study opera at the Australian Conservatory (sic) - we have no such institution - but read Law and Economics at Melbourne University until he decided to devote himself to fulltime musical composition, which in turn led to an uncontemplated singing career with the Victoria State Opera, etc.
Hobson he had the role of "Frederic" Opera Australia production of The Pirates of Penzance with seasons during 2006 in Sydney, Canberra, & Brisbane The national tour continued in 2007, with seasons in Adelaide and Melbourne, making a total of 100 performances in ten months.
His Mozart roles include "Ferrando" - Così fan tutte, "Don Ottavio" - Don Giovanni, "Tamino" - The Magic Flute & "Belmonte" in The Abduction from the Seraglio.
kiwiscoota - I presume you are a 'Kiwi' therefore I hope you are enjoying the new CD "You'll Never Walk Alone" recorded by David Hobson and Teddy Tahu Rhodes last year.
Their concert tour of Australia was fantastic, performing to sellout audiences around the country.
A difficult anthem to sing. I think he did well. My Aussie friend marks this as her favorite hymn; I agree. A great rendition; orchestra did spot-on.
kiwiscoota - David Hobson has performed many major roles with Opera Australia in the past two decades, as well as maintaining a busy concert, recording, composing and television shedule.
I'm not sure who you have in mind, but it wasn't David Hobson.
His debut with the Australian Opera (now called Opera Australia) was in 1990 in the role of Rodolfo - La Bohème. Released on VHS in 1994, it was to become the first opera available on DVD (1998) and continues to be a best seller worldwide.
Hobson's Gilbert & Sullivan roles with Opera Australia, include "Nanki-Poo" in The Mikado, "Marco Palmieri" in The Gondoliers, "Ralph Rackstraw" in HMS Pinafore and "The Defendant" in Trial by Jury.
Electrifying. Makes me wish I were there. May God appoint this man to sing Hosannahs forever in the New Jerusalem.
