  • Electrifying. Makes me wish I were there. May God appoint this man to sing Hosannahs forever in the New Jerusalem.

  • One of my personal favorites.. Praise God!

  • SandyRiver24.....you are talking absolute rubbish and wouldn't know talent if it bit you on your arse!!

  • I watched David sing this song tonight at the 2010 christmas carols...magnificent!!

  • David sings this beautifully and I think that he sings it because he believes it. I've just watched the 2010 Carols by Candlelight tonight and he just sang it again. God bless you David. Thanks for posting this rendition.

  • He does this song better than anyone.

  • too big for him. should stick to G and S

  • A voice full of energy... Most enjoyable

  • This is a beautiful presentation

  • Never sung enough, what a beautiful rendition!

  • it's a crying shame that they totally left out the second verse referring to the crucifixion.. which absolutely MAKES the song! OH well,, he has a nice voice and I love the orchestra with it!

  • @Jeavey Hobson included the second verse tonight (Carols by Candlelight 2010) so perhaps it will be posted for everyone to enjoy, because he was in splendid voice!

  • beautiful!!! who is he? Australian?

  • His name is David Hobson, and yes he is Australian. Great talent! We are very proud of him too!

  • There are always surprises... I've never heard this song before even so it' quite famous, isn't it?

Very good and a charming singer.

    Love from Germany.

  • I would like to be in his fan club, if he has one. This is so glorifying to God, thank you Mr. Hobson.

  • Used to be sung so often. No one seems to know it now. Just so beautiful Thanks you.

  • Thank you for this wonderful post. I love David's talent and his personality is so down to earth.

  • absolutely fantastic..well done David Hobson..

  • I will butt in to the debate between kiwiscoota and becoblue. Yes kiwiscoota you have knowledge of David's operatic roles, but unfortunately you have little knowledge of his so-called training. Becoblue is right, David has had no formal training other than for roles, language etc. He did go to Uni, firstly to train as an accountant/economist but music got in the way and he trained in music composition etc, never formal training in singing.

  • His Rossini roles include "Lindoro" in L'Italiana in Algeri, "Ramiro" in La Cenerentola, "Count Almaviva" in The Barber of Seville, "Dorvil" in La scala di seta and "Florville" in Il Signor Bruschino.

Other roles have included "Ernesto" in Don Pasquale (Gaetano Donizetti), "Nadir" in The Pearl Fishers (Georges Bizet), and "Orphée" in Orphée et Eurydice, (the rarely-performed 1774 Paris version for tenor) by Christoph Willibald Gluck.

So yeah, I guess I am mistaken (NOT) !!

  • kiwiscoota - I'm glad you are so familiar with David's operatic career, as am I. Thank you for detailing many of his career highlights, especially as many viewers may be unaware of what a truly talented and versatile artist David is.

In my original comment I was rather obliquely trying to point out that he had achieved all of this with no formal training, apart from that required for each production. He didn't in fact "study opera for years at the Australian Conservatory (?)"

  • @kiwiscoota

Thanks for pasting Hobson's operatic repertoire across from Wikipedia - although I believe you missed his "Nemorino" in The Elixir of Love! Becoblue and versatile0268 are right, Hobson did NOT study opera at the Australian Conservatory (sic) - we have no such institution - but read Law and Economics at Melbourne University until he decided to devote himself to fulltime musical composition, which in turn led to an uncontemplated singing career with the Victoria State Opera, etc.

  • Hobson he had the role of "Frederic" Opera Australia production of The Pirates of Penzance with seasons during 2006 in Sydney, Canberra, & Brisbane The national tour continued in 2007, with seasons in Adelaide and Melbourne, making a total of 100 performances in ten months.

His Mozart roles include "Ferrando" - Così fan tutte, "Don Ottavio" - Don Giovanni, "Tamino" - The Magic Flute & "Belmonte" in The Abduction from the Seraglio.

  • kiwiscoota - I presume you are a 'Kiwi' therefore I hope you are enjoying the new CD "You'll Never Walk Alone" recorded by David Hobson and Teddy Tahu Rhodes last year.

Their concert tour of Australia was fantastic, performing to sellout audiences around the country.

  • A difficult anthem to sing. I think he did well. My Aussie friend marks this as her favorite hymn; I agree. A great rendition; orchestra did spot-on.

  • A nice voice but needs some work on diction.

  • David sang this song again at Carols in the Domain 2008. He really does it justice.

  • Brilliant rendition of my favourite hymn -well done Australia!

  • I've uploaded a HD version of 2008's performance. Incredible! Do a YouTube search on - the following code x_k3w3QOMeg

  • He played the role of Rodolfo in the 1990 production of La bohème for The Australian Opera, directed by Baz Luhrmann.

  • great version many thanks for posting

  • Always a hightlight of carols in the domain for me- this one is better than the 2006 version also uploaded

  • He was a rock singer in a band and was found.Just a normal Aussie and a nice bloke .

  • is that why he studied Opera at the Australian Conservatory for some years ?

  • kiwiscoota - David Hobson has performed many major roles with Opera Australia in the past two decades, as well as maintaining a busy concert, recording, composing and television shedule.

I'm not sure who you have in mind, but it wasn't David Hobson.

  • His debut with the Australian Opera (now called Opera Australia) was in 1990 in the role of Rodolfo - La Bohème. Released on VHS in 1994, it was to become the first opera available on DVD (1998) and continues to be a best seller worldwide.

Hobson's Gilbert & Sullivan roles with Opera Australia, include "Nanki-Poo" in The Mikado, "Marco Palmieri" in The Gondoliers, "Ralph Rackstraw" in HMS Pinafore and "The Defendant" in Trial by Jury.

  • Great singer. I had never heard of David Hobson before stumbling across this vid. Thanks for uploading it.

  • Inspiring---how anyone could not be moved by this. Thanks for posting it.

  • A remarkable live performance!

  • Superb rendition of a difficult yet inspiring song to memorize and perform. Thx for the post. Hope the Grinch lawyers don't take it away.

  • A beautiful song, sung beautifully. Thank you

  • OMG, he sounds like a chipmunk. Cute, though.

  • tsausi1,are you 44 years old and send messages like that?

  • Very beautiful singing -- as always. Thank you for posting this. :D

  • Magnificent. The 2007 performance was spoilt by the drums coming in at the end.

  • I love it !! Anyone have the 2006 and recent 2007 Holy City performance ?

  • i like this carol and i think david did a great job sinning this song

  • Or even singing ;-)

    Love Love Love his rendition.
